George Sand S eudónimo de Amandine Aurore Lucie Dupin, baronesa Dudevant, novelista francesa del movimiento romántico cuyo estilo de vida anticonvencional y sus numerosos romances escandalizaron a la sociedad parisina. Sand nació en París, el 1 de julio de 1804, hija de un oficial del ejército francés llamado Dupin que descendía del rey Augusto II de Polonia. Pasó la mayor parte de su infancia en el campo, en Nohant, y estudió en un convento de París. En 1822 se casó con Casimir Dudevant, un rico hacendado, pero no tardó en aburrirse y abandonarlo. En 1831 se trasladó a París y se unió a un grupo de distinguidos artistas, entre los que figuraban el novelista francés Honoré de Balzac y el compositor húngaro Franz Liszt. Se hizo famosa tanto por sus escritos como por sus romances, especialmente por su relación con el poeta francés Alfred de Musset y con el compositor polaco Frédéric Chopin. Con este último realizó un viaje a la isla de Mallorca, a la fría Pollensa que narró en Un invierno en Mallorca (1841). Sand fue una escritora enormemente prolífica que expresaba en sus obras una honda preocupación por los problemas humanos y los ideales feministas. Son mari décide alors de s'installer dans une autre bourgade, siège de comices agricoles renommées, Yonville-l'Abbaye. Là, elle fait connaissance des personnalités locales, Homais, pharmacien progressiste et athée, le curé Bournisien, Léon Dupuis, clerc de notaire, Rodolphe Boulanger, gentilhomme campagnard. La naissance d'une fille la distrait un peu, mais bientôt Emma cède aux avances de Rodolphe. Elle veut s'enfuir avec son amant qui, lâche, l'abandonne. Emma croit en mourir, traverse d'abord une crise de mysticisme, puis plus tard, au théâtre de Rouen, revoit Léon, revenu de Paris. Elle devient très vite sa maîtresse, lors d'une promenade dans un fiacre. Installée dans sa liaison, Emma Bovary invente des mensonges pour revoir Léon, et dépense des sommes importantes, qu'elle emprunte à un marchand trop complaisant, Lheureux.

George Sand schrieb über ihn: "Der arme große Künstler war ein unleidlicher Patient (...) die Falte in einem Rosenblatt, der Schatten einer Fliege peinigten ihn bis aufs Blut." Man sah Chopins Musik als Ausdruck des Schmerzes einer kränkelnden Seele und innerer Verzweiflung wie etwa bei Beethoven. Er war zwar ein schwermütig veranlagter Mensch; dies war für seine Musik aber viel weniger von Bedeutung, als ihre Stimmung den Eindruck erwecken könnte. Sie muß vielmehr als Ausdruck von Lebensfreude als von Weltschmerz verstanden werden. "Das Schlichte ist das Wesentliche." Table of Contributors Table of Contents Return to Encyclopedia Home Page George Sand In June 1848, Victor Hugo remarked that the revolution had turned the world upside-down, drawing into the political arena two of the most famous writers of the time: "a woman called Lamartine and a man called George Sand." Hugo's irreverent jibe about Sand's refusal to conform to the gender conventions of her time can stand as emblematic of her ambiguous position in 1848. On the one hand, she played a decisive role in Ledru-Rollin's government; yet she never had an official position or title, and her labors remained unremunerated. After the revolution failed, she was criticized from the right for her radical position, and from the left for her "cowardly" retreat to Nohant. The events of February caught her off guard. She immediately rushed to Paris, arriving on March 1 and promptly obtained a " laissez-passer " allowing her free access to all the members of the provisional government. Her son's garret, 8 , where she lived, quickly became a central meeting place. Except for one trip to Nohant (March 7 to 21), she spent the entire time in Paris, until May 18, when, following days of unrest, a failed coup, and massive arrests, all hope of a democratic assembly was lost.
