Hugo's irreverent jibe about Sand's refusal to conform to the gender conventions of her time can stand as emblematic of her ambiguous position in 1848. On the one hand, she played a decisive role in Ledru-Rollin's government; yet she never had an official position or title, and her labors remained unremunerated. After the revolution failed, she was criticized from the right for her radical position, and from the left for her "cowardly" retreat to Nohant. The events of February caught her off guard. She immediately rushed to Paris, arriving on March 1 and promptly obtained a " laissez-passer " allowing her free access to all the members of the provisional government. Her son's garret, 8 , where she lived, quickly became a central meeting place. Except for one trip to Nohant (March 7 to 21), she spent the entire time in Paris, until May 18, when, following days of unrest, a failed coup, and massive arrests, all hope of a democratic assembly was lost.

A 4 ans, Aurore est recueillie par sa grand-mère qui habite à Nohant. Puis à l'âge de 13 ans, elle entre au couvent des Augustines anglaises à Paris. Elle se marie ensuite en 1822 avec le baron Dudevant avec qui elle aura deux enfants: Maurice et Consuela. Mais cette union ne durera pas longtemps. E n 1831, elle rencontre Jules Sandeau à qui elle prendra son pseudonyme "Sand" .Son premier roman, elle l'écrit avec Sandeau, "Rose et Blanche"; il est signé Jules Sand. En 1832, elle signe son premier roman "Indiana": George Sand. E lle provoque l'irritation de ses contemporains par son comportement; elle s'habille en homme, fume la pipe, monte à cheval comme un homme. Sa vie est très mouvementée. Lors de son voyage en Suisse en 1836, elle retrouve Liszt et Marie D'Agout. En 1838, c'est le début de sa liaison avec Chopin. Cette même année, elle part en voyage à Majorque au Baléares avec ses enfants et Chopin. E n 1839, revenue en France, elle passe l'été à Nohant puis, en octobre, s'installe à Paris avec Chopin mais dans des appartements différents : elle finira par rompre en 1847. Amandine-Aurore-Lucile Dupin - later Baroness Dudevant July 1 June 8 ) was a French novelist and early feminist (prior to the invention of the word), writing under the pseudonym of George Sand She was born in Paris . In , she married Baron Casimir Dudevant, and they had two children, Maurice (b. 1823) and Solange (b. 1828). In 1835 she parted from her husband. Her first novel, "Rose Et Blanche" (1831) was written in collaboration with Jules Sandeau , from whom she took her pen-name. Society Summary Jules, the Prince of Bramante, has been disappointed in his hopes of having a male heir. His oldest son and wife produced only a girl child, then died. Jules decides to have their child, Gabriel, raised as a boy. She is to be instructed that women are mindless slaves to men, born to suffer, so that when, at adolescence, her sex is revealed to her, she will decide to accept instead the sex her grandfather has given her. When she is told the truth, Gabriel does not abandon her male costume or demeanor, but she does want to make sure that Astolphe, her cousin who should rightfully inherit the family fortune, has all the money he needs. She sets out to find him. They meet in a bar and before Astolphe learns her identity, they fight with some thieves and are taken to prison. In prison, they swear life-long affection and decide to travel together, winding up in Venice for the carnival.
