Experiments on Air
Philosophical Transactions In a paper, printed in the last volume of the Philosophical Transactions, in which I gave my reasons for thinking that the diminution produced in atmospheric air by phlogistication, is not owing to the generation of fixed air , I said it seemed most likely, that the phlogistication of air by the electric spark was owing to the burning of some inflammable matter in the apparatus; and that the fixed air, supposed to be produced in that process, was only separated from that inflammable matter by the burning. At that time, having made no experiments on the subject myself, I was obliged to form my opinion from those already published; but I now find, that though I was right in supposing the phlogistication of the air does not proceed from phlogiston communicated to it by the electric spark, and that no part of the air is converted into fixed air; yet that the real cause of the diminution is very different from what I suspected, and depends on the conversion of phlogisticated air into nitrous acid The apparatus used in making the experiments was as follows: The air through which the spark was intended to be passed, was confined in a glass tube M, bent to an angle, as in fig. 4, pl. 1, which, after being filled with

by Bettina White (The following article appeared in the

and is reprinted here by permission.) A group of archaeologists has uncovered the location of the old salt works at Drennon Creek. Working under a red and white striped tent in the heat of the day, the group painstakingly uncovered the location of one salt furnace and numerous artifacts, including redware shards, cast iron kettle fragments, buttons and bones of large mammals such as pigs. The site of the saltworks is scheduled as the location of the new Drennon Creek bridge. Before construction begins, however, the Department of Highways must ascertain the significance of the site in historic and pre-historic terms. According to Kurt Fiegel, project archaeologist with the Department of Highways, there is no question of the historic significance of the site, but there may be some pre-historic significance, as well. In The History of Henry County, Willard Rouse Jillson states that there are the fossilized remains of pre-historic creatures such as mastodons and mammoths in the bottom of Drennon Creek, just as were found at Big Bone Lick, but no one can be certain of this until such remains are recovered during the dig. Said Fiegel, "Unfortunately, you have to destroy the historic in order to find the pre-historic."

The main building serves students in grades K-4; an inclusion third grade is located across the street in a church basement. Students in two fourth grade classes as well as all students in grades 5-6 are located in an annex which is 3 blocks from the main building. A principal, new to the school and state, leads a staff of 84 personnel with the aid of an assistant principal. Seventy-three percent of the students are eligible for free or reduced lunch. Forty-three percent of the students are White, 41% are Hispanic, 11% are Black, 1% are Asian/Pacific Islander, and 1% are Native American. Twenty-three percent of the students receive special education services in a self-contained or resource setting and 9% are ESL. A kindergarten classroom in the main building and a grade 3 classroom across the street are two inclusion classrooms at the Henry Winters Elementary School.

Utah was settled in 1847 by a religious community of people generally known by the name of Mormons, but they style themselves, “The Latter-day Saints of the Church of Jesus Christ.” In the great valley of a vast inland sea, the existence of which was unknown to the world seventy-five years ago, whose surroundings were a desert in the most rigid definition of the term, a great commonwealth has been established unparalleled in the history of its origin by that of any of the civilized countries of the world. Out of the most desolate of our vast arid interior areas, in less than half a century has been evolved not only a magnificent garden spot, but a great city with all the adjuncts of our most modern civilization. Rich in its architecture, progressive in its art, with a literature that is marvellous when the conditions from which it has sprung are seriously considered, the Mormon community meets all the demands of our ever advancing civilization. Neither the love of gold, nor the cupidity of conquest, those characteristics which have subordinated other portions of the New World to the restless ambition of man, were the causes that have revolutionized both the physical character and the social conditions of the now wealthy and prosperous state of Utah. As Bancroft very forcibly states:

    Robert and Maria
The earliest record of the Salt family that I have is the marriage certificate of Robert Salt and Maria Barrett who were married in the Village of Speen, County Berkshire, England, in June 1816. Robert was about 23 years of age at the time of his marriage to Maria who was probably a few years younger. I believe that Robert was originally from the village of Hungerford, a few miles west of Speen, as it was the custom for the marriage to take place in the bride's Parish. Nevertheless, Robert and Maria soon moved to Hungerford where Robert was employed over the following 20 years or so in the town's hotel industry.
Parish records show that there were several Salt families living in Hungerford in the late 18 th and early 19 th centuries, and an earlier branch probably hailed from the village of Lambourne, a little way to the north of Hungerford.
Robert and Maria had several children, all of whom were born in Hungerford, and they are as follows:
    Name Born William Robert
    Mary Ann
    Thomas
    Henry
Robert Maria Charlotte Robert worked for some time as a waiter at the Bear Inn, a hotel that still operates today. Later, records from the Hungerford National School in the 1820's show that Robert Salt, father of pupils Thomas and Henry, was variously described as a publican, a malster, a victualler and so forth.

$1,750 the pair Pair of landscape views from a larger set entitled "Twenty-four views in St. Helena, the Cape, India, Ceylon, the Red Sea, Abyssinia and Egypt." The views are by Henry Salt, British Consul-General in Egypt, and well known artist, traveler, and antiquary. Salt's own collection of Egyptian antiquities was sold by Sotheby's in 1835, and many are now in the collection of the British Museum.
The period of exploration of Egypt, the Middle East, and India in the early 19th Century supported the French Empire and Regency periods, with a more literal interpretation of classicism in architecture, furniture, and decorative arts, as reflected in the works of Thomas Hope and others.
In the Vale of Calaat, Salt shows native peoples near a small village with magnificent red brown mountains in the distance. The other view shows a family in the mountainous rocky terrain of St. Helena.
Generally good condition with the usual light toning, wear, soiling, foxing. Some mild toning and chips in borders, but margins ample and easily matted out.

Version Date: January 4, 2002 Handbook of Rhetorical Devices have been deleted from this file. Adventure novel. A novel where exciting events are more important than character development and sometimes theme. Examples:
    • H. Rider Haggard, King Solomon's Mines Baroness Orczy, The Scarlet Pimpernel Alexandre Dumas, The Three Musketeers Alexandre Dumas, The Count of Monte Cristo
Allegory. A figurative work in which a surface narrative carries a secondary, symbolic or metaphorical meaning. In The Faerie Queene , for example, Red Cross Knight is a heroic knight in the literal narrative, but also a figure representing Everyman in the Christian journey. Many works contain allegories or are allegorical in part, but not many are entirely allegorical. A good example of a fully allegorical work is
    • Edmund Spenser, The Faerie Queene
Apologue. A moral fable, usually featuring personified animals or inanimate objects which act like people to allow the author to comment on the human condition. Often, the apologue highlights the irrationality of mankind. The beast fable, and the fables of Aesop are examples. Some critics have called Samuel Johnson's Rasselas an apologue rather than a novel because it is more concerned with moral philosophy than with character or plot. Examples:
