According to Sharp Henry Martin is probably the older ballad and was recomposed during the reign of James I. However, some scholars feel it is the other way around. Whichever is the case, Henry Martin dates to at least the 1700s. This ballad is Child Ballad In the many versions the hero is variously Henry Martin (Martyn), Robin Hood, Sir Andrew Barton, Andrew Bodee, Andrew Bartin, Henry Burin and Roberton. Sharp feels Henry Martin is probably a corruption of the name Andrew Barton. The ballad is based on a family that lived during the reign of Henry VIII. A Scottish officer, Sir Andrew Barton, was attacked by the Portuguese. Letters of marque were then issued to two of his sons. The brothers, not finding sufficient Portuguese ships, began harassing English merchants. King Henry VIII commissioned the Earl of Surrey to end their piracy. HENRY SALT Henry Salt became associated with Egyptology as the employer of Belzoni, friend of Burckhardt, and the owner of three important collections of Egyptian Antiquities. He was born in Litchfield, in 1785. He had been trained as a painter. He first visited Egypt when he toured India and North Africa with the Viscount Valentia, George Annesley. I am inclined to think it a grave mistake to argue seriously with those afflicted persons who periodically exercise themselves over this idlest of academic questions. It is wiser to meet them with a practical counter-thrust, and pointedly inquire, for example, whether they are familiar with the writings of Herman Melville. Whereupon, confusion will in most cases ensue, and you will go on to suggest that to criticise Hamlet , with the prince's part omitted, would be no whit more fatuous than to demonstrate the non-existence of an American literature, while taking no account of its true intellectual giants. When it was announced, a few months ago, that "Mr. Herman Melville, the author," had just died in New York at the age of seventy-two, the news excited but little interest on this side of the Atlantic; yet, forty years ago, his name was familiar to English, as to American readers, and there is little or no exaggeration in Robert Buchanan's remark that he is "the one great imaginative writer fit to stand shoulder to shoulder with Whitman on that continent." Culmer (1854-1914) Salt Lake City "Harry" Culmer played a significant role in the promotion and early economic progress of the West as an entrepreneur, developer of natural resources, civic leader, descriptive writer and landscape painter. He liked to hike and explore unknown regions of the mountains and deserts. Like Thomas Moran and other Rocky Mountain artists, he would not allow danger or discomfort to dissuade him in his quest for panoramic vistas and scenic splendors. Culmer was the first artist to see and depict the area of the natural bridges in southern Utah and also the interior of Alaska. Culmer believe that sublime and magnificent scenery depicted both the beauty and the spirit of America. A scene of spectacular beauty The Three Tetons is a naturalistic work that shows Culmer's desire to tell a story with both topological accuracy and chauvinistic exaggeration. Culmer had a deep knowledge of nature based on direct observation and an intense self-study and love of science. He believed that mountains were "the most noble subject for an artists' brush." The painting was reproduced as a 16 x 20 inch print by the Deseret News in the spring of 1913 and offered to subscribers who paid their bills three months in advance. The Salt Lake Daily Herald said of Brush Creek Gorge, Ashley Utah in 1886, "One of the most striking bits of scenery in the Uintah Mountains, near Ashley, next claims the attention of the visitor. The rocky walls are admirably handled and the seams and crevices from which here and there a shrub has grown, are given with striking force and naturalness. The depths of the abyss are lost in a shadowy mist, and the whole is a vivid illustration of the wonders of that little known region. It is painted for Mr. L. Johnson of Ashley, whose cattle interests lie in that direction."
