The Gardens of Sallust
A Changing Landscape Table of Contents and Excerpt By Kim J. Hartswick
"I know of no study quite like Kim Hartswick's treatment of the Horti Sallustiani, although I hope that it will soon stand as a model for other scholars.... The wealth of factual knowledge that has gone into this study is immense.... This is a marvelous piece of truly new scholarship." The Culture of the High Renaissance: Ancients and Moderns in Sixteenth-Century Rome Pleasure gardens, or horti, offered elite citizens of ancient Rome a retreat from the noise and grime of the city, where they could take their leisure and even conduct business amid lovely landscaping, architecture, and sculpture. One of the most important and beautiful of these gardens was the Horti Sallustiani, originally developed by the Roman historian Sallust at the end of the first century B.C. and later possessed and perfected by a series of Roman emperors. Though now irrevocably altered by two millennia of human history, the Gardens of Sallust endure as a memory of beauty and as a significant archaeological site, where fragments of sculpture and ruins of architecture are still being discovered. In this ambitious work, Kim Hartswick undertakes the first comprehensive history of the Gardens of Sallust from Roman times to the present, as well as its influence on generations of scholars, intellectuals, and archaeologists. He draws from an astonishing array of sources to reconstruct the original dimensions and appearance of the gardens and the changes they have undergone at specific points in history. Hartswick thoroughly discusses the architectural features of the garden and analyzes their remains. He also studies the sculptures excavated from the gardens and discusses the subjects and uses of many outstanding examples.

Sallust
Sallust (Gaius Sallustius Crispus) 34 BC ), Roman historian, belonging to a well-known plebeian family, was born at Amiternum in the country of the Sabine s. After an ill-spent youth he entered public life, and was elected tribune of the people in , the year in which Clodius was killed in a street brawl by the followers of Milo . Sallust was opposed to Milo and to Pompey 's party and to the old aristocracy of Rome. From the first he was a decided partisan of Caesar, to whom he owed such political advancement as he attained. In he was removed from the senate by the censor Appius Claudius Pulcher on the ground of gross immorality, the real reason probably being his friendship for Caesar. In the following year, no doubt through Caesar's influence, he was reinstated and appointed quaestor In he was praetor , and accompanied Caesar in his African campaign, which ended in the decisive defeat of the remains of the Pompeian party at Thapsus . As a reward for his services, Sallust was appointed governor of the province of Africa Nova. In this capacity he was guilty of such oppression and extortion that only the influence of Caesar enabled him to escape condemnation. On his return to Rome he purchased and laid out in great splendour the famous gardens on the Quirinal known as the

About Ambition
It is the nature of ambition to make men liars and cheats, to hide the truth in their breasts, and show, like jugglers, another thing in their mouths, to cut all friendships and enmities to the measure of their own interest, and to make a good countenance without the help of good will.
About Virtue
The glory that goes with wealth and beauty is fleeting and fragile; virtue is a possession glorious and eternal.
About Mind We employ the mind to rule, the body to serve. About Change As the blessings of health and fortune have a beginning, so they must also find an end. Everything rises but to fall, and increases but to decay. About Friends To like and dislike the same things, this is what makes a solid friendship.
