In the work on the war of Catiline, Sallust reveals especially the corruption of what was called the Roman nobility, by tracing the criminal designs of the conspirators to their sourcesavarice, and the love of pleasure. In the history of the Jugurthine war, he particularly exposes and condemns the system of bribery in which the leading men of that age indulged; but on the other hand, he draws a pleasing contrast in describing the restoration of military discipline by Metullus and Marius. The difficult campaigns in the extensive and desert country of Numidia, and the wonderful events of this war, also deserve the attention of the reader; the more so, as the author has bestowed the greatest care on giving vivid descriptions of them. [2] It has indeed been said that Quinctilian, who wrote about the year 95 after Christ, cites passages from these Declamations; but critical investigation has shown that these passages are interpolations, and are found only in the worst manuscripts.

Sallust Kurzvita C. Sallustius Crispus (= "Krauskopf") wurde am 1. 10. 86 v.Chr. in der kleinen sabinischen Landstadt Amiternum geboren. Von seinen Jugendjahren wissen wir so gut wie nichts. Als junger Mann kam er nach Rom, um sich weiterzubilden, ging aber dann in die Politik, wo er 55 das Amt eines Quästors (Finanzbeamter) verwaltete, das ihm der Verfassung nach den Zutritt zum Senat verschaffte. Als Volkstribun des Jahres 52 agierte er v.a. gegen Cicero Der Geschichtsschreiber Geschichtsschreibung ein treffendes Beispiel war. Zentrale Begriffe Auch in der Zeit der Bürgerkriege sah er eine direkte Folge der moralischen Verwahrlosung der römischen Adelsschicht, als deren Hauptlaster er " avaritia " (Habsucht) und " luxuria " (verschwenderischer Lebenswandel, Luxus) ansah, wobei er "avaritia" als einen Egoismus definierte, der den einzelnen Bürger vom Staat isoliert und dadurch dem Sinn für Gemeinschaft entfremdet. Ammianus, Theodosius and Sallust's Jugurtha Robin Seager (University of Liverpool) ABSTRACT The purpose of this paper is to examine Ammianus' treatment of the elder Theodosius and to suggest the existence of certain parallels between his account of Theodosius' suppression of the rising of the Moorish chieftain Firmus (29.5) and an earlier North African war, that waged by Q. Metellus and C. Marius against the Numidian king Jugurtha, narrated in Sallust' s monograph. The tentative conclusion will be that a reading of Ammianus that keeps Sallust in mind corroborates a view that is, I believe, defensible in its own right, namely that Ammianus is by no means as uncritical of Theodosius as has sometimes been assumed. Writing under Theodosius' son, he could not of course risk open criticism. Indeed, his portrayal of Theodosius is overtly encomiastic. But, as I have tried to demonstrate elsewhere, Ammianus is capable of subverting even official encomium to produce an effect on his readers very different from that intended by official sources. 1. Sallust was opposed to Milo and to Pompey 's party and to the old aristocracy of Rome. From the first he was a decided partisan of Caesar , to whom he owed such political advancement as he attained. In he was removed from the senate by the censor Appius Claudius Pulcher on the ground of gross immorality, the real reason probably being his friendship for Caesar. In the following year, no doubt through Caesar's influence, he was reinstated and appointed quaestor In he was praetor , and accompanied Caesar in his African campaign, which ended in the decisive defeat of the remains of the Pompeian party at Thapsus . As a reward for his services, Sallust was appointed governor of the province of Numidia . In this capacity he was guilty of such oppression and extortion that only the influence of Caesar enabled him to escape condemnation. Chr. in Amiternum im Sabinerland als Sohn einer angesehen Familie geboren . Als Jugendlicher kam er nach Rom. Er interessierte sich sehr für Politik, machte eine Ausbildung zum Rhetor und informierte sich auf dem Forum über politische Anschauungen. Im Alter von 20 Jahren zählte er zu den Anhängern des Catilina. So erlebte er viele politische Ereignisse mit, wie z.B. den Aufstieg von Pompeius und Caesar, den hoffnungslosen Kampf der Optimaten und die wieder zunehmende Brutalisierung der innenpolitischen Konflikte. Als er 32 Jahre alt war, gehörte er zu den Anhängern des Machthabers Caesar. Nun wurde Sallust Quästor und trat in den Senat ein, wo er durch eine gehässige Schmähschrift gegen Cicero viel Unruhe verursachte. Zwei Jahre später (52 v. Chr.) wurde er
