Date: Date: June 7, 1995 07:19 23:39 Ryokan Hiraiwa; Kyoto-Japan :: 3 JUN 95 Tonight I managed to scoop the last room in the Ryokan Hiraiwa. The situation looked grim after about the fourth 'Solly, no room' coming over the payphone. It was 20:00, it was raining, and I was wondering whether Kyoto's Central Station had any benches that I might sleep on-Tokyo Station didn't. 00:53 Babawaki-cho 7-2, Shugakuin; Kyoto, Kansai-Japan :: 6 JUN 95 A rice-paper screen covers the window. If you open the window, remember that the screen should remain open as well, in case of rain. In the Hiraiwa my room has a television. 6 channels of Japanese-language programming. In the evening, there are baseball games featuring teams like the Dodgers, Giants , Swallows and Carp. The highlight reels love to show every strike-out pitch thrown during the game. If you tire of baseball there's usually some Hollywood film on, dubbed in Japanese. During news hours you always see the face of Shoko Asahara, the AUM cult leader who allegedly gassed Tokyo subways. Mostly, the Japanese seem to like shows with talking heads. Pretty uninteresting if you can't understand the talk.

Ryokan
What happens in a Ryokan, a Japanese stype inn
Formerly, the term, Japanese Style Hotel, was used in reference to Ryokan , but in recent years the Japanese term has become well-known and is used in many pamphlets introducing Japan to tourists. In other countries the name of a hotel is usually suffixed by the word hotel. In Japan many words are used. The kan part of Ryokan means mansion. Other places offering overnight accomodations have suffixes such as so , villa; kaku or ro , palace; en , garden; or ya , house. Some hotels use a name that refers to a natural phenomenon such as akemono meaning dawn. These names are easily understood by the Japanese, but very confusing to foreigners. In recent years many Ryokans have added to the confusion by also adding the word hotel to their names. Some of these Ryokan do feature western style rooms and furnishings, but most give the impression of being cheap lodging houses.
What is True Ryokan Like?
Traditions are still observed here. At the entrance, a hostess or clerk will welcome you in the Japanese way by bowing and ushering you in. Slippers will be placed on the slightly raised floor, so you must remove your shoes and don them for walking in the hallways. Remember to take off the slippers when you come upon the reed tatami matting in your room. At a

Ryokan
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. This article is about the Zen monk. For the Japanese type of inn, see Ryokan inn Ryokan Zen Buddhist monk who lived in Japan . He soon left the monastery where practice was frequently quite lax, and lived as a hermit until he was very old and had to move into the house of one of his supporters. Ryokan was famous for his poetry and calligraphy . His poetry is often very simple and inspired by nature. He was a lover of children, and sometimes forgot to go on his alms round to get food because he was playing with the children of the nearby village. There is some debate as to whether Ryokan was enlightened, but he lived a very simple, very pure life, and stories about his kindness and generosity abound.

Stay at ryokan A ryokan is probably a place where visitors can come closest to the traditional style of Japanese home life.
Guests will sleep on a comfortable futon (mattress) laid out on the floor of a tatami (straw matted) room which functions as a living room during the day and as a bedroom at night.
Bathrooms are Japanese style and often communal, though the sexes are segregated, except for a very few inns at outlying hot spring resorts.
NTA Ryokan are standard class accommodations, not deluxe class.

Gogöan ryokan s Hermit Hut. ryokan was a poet, not a chronicler, but in his poetry, his hut is the setting and context of his life and practice.
http://www.hermitary.com/articles/ryokan.html
HOME Articles Book Reviews Features ARTICLES: HOUSE OF HERMITS
: Ryokan's Hermit Hut
Unlike some Chinese and Japanese chroniclers who wrote accounts of their hermit huts, the celebrated Japanese poet and Zen monk Ryokan did not compose anything so specific. Ryokan was a poet, not a chronicler, but in his poetry, his hut is the setting and context of his life and practice. This is hardly a coincidence for the little hermitage is an obvious metaphor for life itself: I sit quietly, listening to the falling leaves
A lonely hut, a life of renunciation ... and this hut of sticks,
flimsy as the world itself. Ryokan was born in the cold and isolated Chigo (now Nigata) province in the village of Izumozaki. His father was well off, a merchant and the village elder, who passed on to his son a love of poetry. Ryokan's quiet childhood included both literature and religion, and his reticent nature rebelled at the notion of succeeding his father in business and politics. He became a Buddhist monk at the local Zen temple, and left to train twelve years with a master, cultivating as well the study of Chinese poetry and calligraphy. After the death of his master, Ryokan traveled as a pilgrim for five years, returning to his native village after his father's death, and settling himself in a nearby mountain hermitage. He was now forty. Ryokan remained twenty years, leaving reluctantly upon bad health, moving to quarters close to town. However, he always remained a hermit.
