When I was a lad,
I sauntered about town as a gay blade,
Sporting a cloak of the softest down,
And mounted ona splendid chestnut-colored horse.
During the day, I galloped to the city;
At night, I got drunk on peach blossoms by the river.
I never cared about returning home,
Usually ending up, with a big smile on my face, at a pleasure pavilion!
Ill, I put up at a country inn and listen to the rain.
One robe, one bowl is all I have. I light incense and strain to sit in meditatin; All night a steady drizzle outside the dark window Inside, poignant memories of these long years of pilgrimage. To My Teacher An old grave hidden away at the foot of a deserted hill, Overrun with rank weeks growing unchecked year after year; There is no one left to tend the tomb, And only an occasional woodcutter passes by. Once I was his pupil, a youth with shaggy hair, Learning deeply from him by the Narrow River.

64. Zen Poetry
A few poems by three of Japan's greatest Zen monkpoets, Ikkyu (1394-1481), Basho (1644-1694), and ryokan (1758-1831).
http://www.ship.edu/~cgboeree/zenpoetry.html
These are a few of my favorite poems by three of Japan’s greatest Zen monk-poets, Ikkyu (1394-1481), Basho (1644-1694), and Ryokan (1758-1831). Ikkyu
I Hate Incense
A master’s handiwork cannot be measured
But still priests wag their tongues explaining the “Way” and babbling about “Zen.”
This old monk has never cared for false piety
And my nose wrinkles at the dark smell of incense before the Buddha. A Fisherman Studying texts and stiff meditation can make you lose your Original Mind.
A solitary tune by a fisherman, though, can be an invaluable treasure.
Dusk rain on the river, the moon peeking in and out of the clouds;
Elegant beyond words, he chants his songs night after night. My Hovel The world before my eyes is wan and wasted, just like me.
The earth is decrepit, the sky stormy, all the grass withered.
No spring breeze even at this late date,
Just winter clouds swallowing up my tiny reed hut. A Meal of Fresh Octopus Lots of arms, just like Kannon the Goddess; Sacrificed for me, garnished with citron, I revere it so! The taste of the sea, just divine!

A Lesson from Ryokan
T here was a Japanese Zen Master called Ryokan. One day, Ryokan heard his family complain that his nephew was wasting money on prostitutes. Ryokan went to visit his nephew, whom he had not seen for many years. His nephew invited him to stay one night. All night long Ryokan sat in meditation. As he was preparing to leave the next morning, he asked his nephew, "I must be getting old, my hand shakes so. Will you help me tie the string of my straw sandal?" The nephew helped him. Ryokan replied, "Thank you. A man gets older and feebler day by day. Take good care of yourself." Then Ryokan left, without mentioning a word about prostitutes or the complaints of the family. But from that day on, his nephew truly reformed, and stopped spending money on prostitutes and stopped dissipating his life.

Ryokan
Ryokan are Japanese-style inns, complete with a wide variety of facilities. In most cases, guests are served dinner in the evening of the day they arrive and breakfast the next morning. Rooms are usually Japanese-style, with straw tatami mats used for flooring. Guests sleep on futons (thin mattresses that are spread on the tatami mats at night and stored folded in a closet during the day). Ryokan are characterized by the highquality service that they offer and their diligence in maintaining a purely Japanese atmosphere and Japanese-style service.

Type of Accommodations / ryokan. Most ryokan are small buildings of no more than a dozen or so rooms, often built facing a small garden.
http://www.jnto.go.jp/eng/PS/ryokan.html
Type of Accommodations / Ryokan Ryokan are found all across Japan, though for the best experience, you'd be wise to seek out one in a quiet residential district. Most ryokan are small buildings of no more than a dozen or so rooms, often built facing a small garden. There are some 70,000 ryokan in Japan, of which 1,630 are quality establishments belonging to the Japan Ryokan Association. Although ryokan rates vary greatly, with a few very exclusive establishments charging high rates, charges are usually in the range of 12,000 yen to 20,000 yen per person, including two meals and excluding tax and service charges. For the budget traveler, there are more than 80 inns belonging to the Japanese Inn Group, which specializes in welcoming visitors from abroad. These inns are also quite economical, with room rates averaging around 5,000 yen per person, excluding meals. Getting Acquainted with the Japanese Style Guests are obliged to remove their shoes at the entrance of a ryokan or any other kind of Japanese-style accommodation. Slippers are worn inside, except on the tatami matting, so bring thick socks if the weather is cold.
