Jalal al-Din Rumi J alal al-Din Rumi, the Persian Sufi Sage and Poet, was born in Balkh on the 30 th September, 1207. His proper name was Mubammad, title Jalal al-Din and later "Khudawandagar", "lord". In his poetry he used the pen-name "khamush" (meaning "silent") and from the 15 th century came to be known as Mawlawi, the term deriving from his earlier title of Mulla-yi rum, "the learned master of Anatolia". His disciples, such as Ahmad Aflaki called him "The Greatest Mystery of God" (sirr Allah al-a'zam), while the Persian speaking world usually refers to him as Mawlana. In the West where his fame has spread steadily since the 19 th century he is usually known as Rumi, (meaning from Roman Anatolia).
Rumi's father Muhammad ibn Hussain Khatibi, known as Baha' al-Din Walad (entitled Sultan al-'ulama'), was an outstanding Sufi in Balkh. He is the author of the Ma'arif , a masterpiece of Sufism, which left its mark upon Rumi's Mathnawi. When Rumi was about twelve or thirteen years old (around 1220), Baha al-Din Walad left the eastern provinces of Persia with his whole family and a group of disciples and travelled westward. This may have been as a result of the threat of invading Mongol armies. It is said that in Nayshapur he met the renowned Persian Sufi poet Farid al-Din 'Attar and presented Jalal al-Din to him. Apparently Sheikh 'Attar was very impressed by the young Rumi, and told Baha' al-Din Walad, 'soon this son of thine shall set the spiritual aspirants of this world afire'.

Rumi is one of the great spiritual masters and poetical geniuses of mankind and was the founder of the Mawlawi Sufi order, a leading mystical brotherhood of Islam. Rumi was born in Wakhsh (Tajikistan) under the administration of Balkh in 30 September 1207 to a family of learned theologians. Escaping the Mongol invasion and destruction, Rumi and his family traveled extensively in the Muslim lands, performed pilgrimage to Mecca and finally settled in Konya, Anatolia. When his father Bahaduddin Valad passed away, Rumi succeeded his father in 1231 as professor in religious sciences. Rumi 24 years old, was an already accomplished scholar in religious and positive sciences. He was introduced into the mystical path by a wandering dervish, Shamsuddin of Tabriz. His love and his bereavement for the death of Shams found their expression in a surge of music, dance and lyric poems, `Divani Shamsi Tabrizi'. Rumi is the author of six volume didactic epic work, the `Mathnawi', called as the 'Koran in Persian' by Jami, and discourses, `Fihi ma Fihi', written to introduce his disciples into metaphysics. If there is any general idea underlying Rumi's poetry, it is the absolute love of God. His influence on thought, literature and all forms of aesthetic expression in the world of Islam cannot be overrated.

Tasawwuf . He died in 672 A.H. (1273 A.D.) at Konya, which subsequently became a sacred place for dancing derveshes of the Maulvi Order. His major contribution lies in Islamic philosophy and Tasawwuf . This was embodied largely in poetry, especially through his famous Mathnawi . This book, the largest mystical exposition in verse, discusses and offers solutions to many complicated problems in metaphysics, religion, ethics, mysticism, etc. Fundamentally, the Mathnawi highlights the various hidden aspects of Sufism and their relationship with the worldly life. For this, Rumi draws on a variety of subjects and derives numerous examples from everyday life. His main subject is the relationship between man and God on the one hand, and between man and man, on the other. He apparently believed in Pantheism and portrayed the various stages of man's evolution in his journey towards the Ultimate. Apart from the Mathnaui, he also wrote his Diwan (collection of poems) and Fihi-Ma-Fih (a collection of mystical sayings). However, it is the

In 1972 Rumi decided to start his own alloy wheel business. In the 1960s Rumi had become a passionate racing fan after a visit to the Monte Bondone hillclimb event near Trento in northen Italy. He competed in both hillclimbs and in the single-seater Formula Monza category. But he had come to the sport too late to make a career and so found himself with slightly different ambitions. In 1983 he began sponsoring Italian GP driver Piercarlo Ghinzani , who was driving for the Osella team. The following year Fondmetal began supplying racing lightweight racing wheels to Williams Tyrrell and Ligier The link with Osella led in 1990 to Rumi acquiring the team and reorganizing it under the Fondmetal name in 1991.

Persian Poet Top Seller In America Alexandra Marks, Staff writer of The Christian Science Monitor NEW YORK - There is a light seed grain inside. A celebrated past In his day, Rumi was celebrated by Christians, Jews, and Buddhists, as well as by Sufi Muslims who claim him as a part of their tradition. That is the ecstatic, feeling strain of Islam - less familiar in the West than the severe fundamentalist image of Islam. "He's such a spokesman for freedom and transcendence that people have found him to be a great literary voice for centuries," says Carl Ernst, head of religious studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Some scholars compare Rumi's revival to similar fads, such as the burst of interest in Kahlil Gibran's poetry a generation ago. But Mr. Ernst believes the Rumi phenomenon is bigger. "The original words of Rumi are so deep, so perfect, so touching, that when one man repeats them hundreds and thousands of people are moved to tears. They cannot help penetrating the heart. This shows how much Rumi himself was moved to have been able to pour out such living words. Many wanted to consider him a prophet, but he said, 'No, I am not a prophet, I am a poet.' When Hafiz wrote about Rumi he said, 'I am not capable of writing about the verses of Rumi. What I can say is that he is not a prophet, but he is the one who brought the Sacred Book.' In other words he wanted to say that in fact he was a prophet." Hazrat Inayat Khan KHAN LECTURE ON RUMI
