Jalal al-Din Rumi Persian Sufi Sage and Poet (Miniature painting of Rumi by Hossein Behzad) Jalal al-Din Rumi, was born in Balkh on the 30 th September, 1207. His proper name was Mubammad, title Jalal al-Din and later "Khudawandagar" , "lord". In his poetry he used the pen-name "khamush" (meaning "silent") and from the 15 th century came to be known as Mawlawi , the term deriving from his earlier title of Mulla-yi rum , "the learned master of Anatolia". His disciples, such as Ahmad Aflaki called him "The Greatest Mystery of God" (sirr Allah al-a'zam) , while the Persian speaking world usually refers to him as Mawlana. In the West where his fame has spread steadily since the 19 th century he is usually known as Rumi, (meaning from Roman Anatolia). Rumi's father Muhammad ibn Hussain Khatibi, known as Baha' al-Din Walad (entitled Sultan al-'ulama'), was an outstanding Sufi in Balkh. He is the author of the Ma'arif , a masterpiece of Sufism, which left its mark upon Rumi's Mathnawi When Rumi was about twelve or thirteen years old (around 1220), Baha al-Din Walad left the eastern provinces of Persia with his whole family and a group of disciples and travelled westward. This may have been as a result of the threat of invading Mongol armies. It is said that in Nayshapur he met the renowned Persian Sufi poet Farid al-Din 'Attar and presented Jalal al-Din to him. Apparently Sheikh 'Attar was very impressed by the young Rumi, and told Baha' al-Din Walad, 'soon this son of thine shall set the spiritual aspirants of this world afire'.

L'al-vacarme Jalal Mohammad Ibn Mohammad Ibn Mohammad Ibn Husain al-Rumi (1207-1273 ap.jc)
1-PRESENTATION

Jalal al-Din Muhammad Rumi
(Redirected from Rumi Jalal al-Din Muhammad Rumi or Jalal al-Din Muhammad Balkhi (also known as Mevlana , meaning our guide , or Mowlavi , meaning my guide December 17 CE) was a Persian poet and Sufi mystic, who was born in Balkh (then a city of the greater Khorasan province, present Afghanistan ) and died in Konya (present Turkey , then within Seljuk Empire 's territory). The doctrines of Sufism are expression in his symbolic works and those of Hafiz. His major work is " Masnavi-ye Manavi " (Spiritual Couplets), a six-volume poem regarded by many Sufis as second in importance only to the Koran . Rumi's other major work is the "Diwan-i Shams-i Tabriz-i" (The Works of Shams of Tabriz - named in honor of Rumi's great friend and inspiration, the dervish Shams), comprising some 40,000 verses. Both works are among the most significant in all of Persian literature Mevlana who is also known as Rumi, was a philosopher and mystic of Islam. His doctrine advocates unlimited tolerance, positive reasoning, goodness, charity and awareness through love. To him and to his disciples all religions are more or less truth. Looking with the same eye on Muslim Jew Buddhist and Christian alike, his peaceful and tolerant teaching has appealed to

Ghazal 119
i don't need a companion who is nasty sad and sour the one who is like a grave dark depressing and bitter a sweetheart is a mirror a friend a delicious cake it isn't worth spending an hour with anyone else a companion who is in love only with the self has five distinct characters stone hearted unsure of every step lazy and disinterested keeping a poisonous face the more this companion waits around the more bitter everything will get just like a vinegar getting more sour with time enough is said about sour and bitter faces a heart filled with desire for sweetness and tender souls must not waste itself with unsavory matters Translated by Nader Khalili Rumi, Fountain of Fire Cal-Earth, September 1994
Ghazal 314
You who are not kept anxiously awake for love's sake, sleep on. In restless search for that river, we hurry along; you whose heart such anxiety has not disturbed, sleep on. Love's place is out beyond the many separate sects; since you love choosing and excluding, sleep on. Love's dawn cup is our sunrise, his dusk our supper; you whose longing is for sweets and whose passion is for supper, sleep on. In search of the philosopher's stone, we are melting like copper; you whose philosopher's stone is cushion and pillow, sleep on. I have abandoned hope for my brain and head; you who wish for a clear head and fresh brain, sleep on. I have torn speech like a tattered robe and let words go; you who are still dressed in your clothes, sleep on. Translated by Jack Marshall

Rumi video

Rumi is one of the most read and well known poets in the world. When my husband and I saw the movie "Rumi, Poet of The Heart" in San Rafael, California, I got a warm feeling and was very happy to see how much the poetry of Rumi touches people's hearts. At one point, when tears came to my eyes because I was moved by truthfulness of Rumi's poetry, I realized that everyone else in the theater had been touched. After a rough day at work or even before starting my day, listening to Rumi's poetry gives me a warm, hopeful, and serene feeling. Jelaluddin Rumi was born in the Eastern part of the Ancient Persian Empire near Balkh (presently Afghanistan ), on September 30, 1207. His first name literally means Majesty of Religion, Jalal means majesty and din means religion. Because of the threat of Mongol invasion in Persia his family fled, finally settling in Konya, Turkey. He passed away, on December 17, 1273. His shrine is in Konya. As a genius theologian, a brilliant scholar, and a pillar of Islam, he followed in his father place until his spiritual friend and teacher, Shams of Tabriz appeared in his life. Rumi underwent a spiritual transformation in 1244 after meeting Shams. With appearance of Shams, Rumi became reborn and soon started his marvelous work "Masnavi," (Mathnawi) consisting of 24,000 verses at age 38. His other famous work is "Divan-e Shams-e Tabriz" (the collective poems of Shams of Tabriz). Rumi's poetry has a mystic connotation, a combination that is the universal language of the human soul. Rumi's title is Moulana (Mowlana) which means our master.

From Leslie Wines' new book "RUMI" A spiritual biography Jalalu'ddin Rumi, the thirteenth-century Persian lawyer-divine and Sufi, widely considered literature's greatest mystical poet, understood very well the uncontrollable and idiosyncratic impact of poetry. Yet one wonders if even he, for all his intuitive grasp of language, humanity and the cosmos foresaw the deep and diverse influence his own work would have on readers throughout the world seven centuries after his death or the myriad meanings enthusiasts would draw from his sprawling and contradictory poems. In the Islamic world today, Rumi is read for much the same reasons he was revered during his life: for his excellence as a poet; for his rare ability to empathize with humans, animals and plants; for his personal refinement; and, above all else, for his flawless moral center and ability to direct others towards good conduct and union with Allah. For Islamic readers, Rumi remains an important commentator on the Koran and a brilliant exponent of Sufi philosophy, the strain of Islam that stresses direct and ecstatic communion with Allah over Aristotelian questioning. Rumi, who was strictly educated in religious law and philosophy, is viewed in the Islamic world as a spiritual descendant of two other great Sufi writers
