Book Note: Matt Ruff,
This note contains spoilers for the book. The subtitle is "The Public Works Trilogy"; though I don't think there really are three pieces, or it was ever published in separate chunks. I don't remember hearing much about his previous novel Fool On the Hill
My Booknotes on Matt Ruff
Seems very Stephensonian to me so far. Remember that I'm not a big fan of Stephenson. But Stephenson sometimes, and Ruff so far, is doing it well enough that it keeps me reading, anyway. The cover features the World Trade Center towers, and the backstory includes the Empire State Building being demolished when it's struck by an airplane. I suspect these features make a lot of people rather uncomfortable when they look at it these days. Okay, reached the end, and it looks like it has more cohesiveness than Stephenson manages, which is good. I find I care more about the characters, too. It has artificial intelligence, and mutated rats, mile-high building, conspiracy theories, and alligators in the sewers, and parents, and Ayn Rand, civil war veterans, and .70 caliber handguns, and even Boy Scouts. Also a glimpse of what might be heaven, but of course the person involved chooses to leave. I'd recommend this, if you like this sort of thing. It's good enough of its kind that even I enjoyed it considerably, and I

Fool on the Hill , by Matt Ruff published 1988, Grove Press Books Fool on the Hill is some of the best fun you can have while lounging in your favorite easy chair, at least with your clothes on. Full of quirky language and good humor, this roller-coaster of a story lurches along merrily from beginning to end, offering laughs and thrills along the way. Fool on the Hill Filling out the story are a variety of supporting characters, from "Ithacop" officers Nattie Hollister and Sam Doubleday, to activist Fantasy Dreadlock and his Blue Zebra Hooter Patrol, to the brothers of Tolkien House, a fraternity that takes its inspiration from the works of J.R.R. Tolkien. All of the characters in Fool on the Hill are vivid and charming in a cartoony kind of way, with the possible exception of Ragnarok, the Bohemian Minister of Defense, a motorcycle-riding Black Knight with a haunted past. The author of this mad masterwork, Matt Ruff, claims to have been heavily influenced by the style of fantasy author John Crowley, among others. This is apparent in his use of language, which echoes both Crowley's literary tone and his uncanny emotional perceptions. I get the feeling that Fool on the Hill aspires to some grand insights, but never really reaches them. This slight whiff of pretention, however, can easily be brushed aside in favor of the book's engaging characters and sparkling plot.

The Tiptree Award is intended to reward those women and men who are bold enough to contemplate shifts and changes in gender roles, a fundamental aspect of any society. Reading for the 2004 Tiptree Award has begun. The 2004 judges are Margaret McBride (chair), Judith Clute, Alan DeNiro, Ursula K. Le Guin, and Cecilia Tan. Again with the Madcap Behavior?
Yet another madcap romp through the near future, with many weakly connected plots, characters who are mostly collections of peculiarities, an unexplained coincidence every few pages, and a vast conspiracy lurking behind it all: the natural reaction of the cultivated reader is to snort and reach for something much more astringent. I have the greatest respect for the natural reactions of the sensitive reader, but just this once they are worth inhibiting, and worth reading. takes place, for the most part, in New York City in 2023 - really in the Recent Future, which is just like the present, only more so. (There is no maundering about cyberspace, virtuality, or anything of that sort.) I won't give out any spoilers for the main plot-line - not that it's so suspenseful - other than to say it's a genocidal conspiracy involving the Disney Corporation. (I am a bit disturbed at how Ruff uses genocidal plagues as a plot device, but plagues are, for obvious reasons, hot stuff these days.) There are about half a dozen other plots swirling about the uncovering and foiling of the Conspiracy, connected by over-lapping characters and some involvement with Gant Industries; my favorite is the one about an ``alternative-environment-adapted

What happens when two people with Multiple Personality Disorder embark on a road trip to confront the demons of the past? Since each one harbors many selves, numerous combinations of personalities can interact with one another, with unpredictable results. In Matt Ruff's Set This House in Order , Andrew Gage serves as the public persona of a body containing a host of "souls." Severely abused as a child, the original Andy Gage's soul shattered into many, each possessing memories, needs and an agenda of its own. Years of therapy enabled front man Andrew to conceptualize his headful of personalities as a house, complete with grounds and a lake, in which each soul occupies a room. Outside the house stands a "pulpit," from which the other souls carry on a running commentary about Andrew's activities. Imperfect but workable, Andrew's system starts to crumble when he meets Penny Driver. She has other personalities too, but she doesn't know it. Penny blacks out when the other souls take over, leading to a chaotic and miserable life. As Andrew struggles to rebuild his fragile equilibrium, Penny strives to reach an accord with her own fragmented selves. Many laypersons and more than a few experts doubt the validity of the Multiple Personality Disorder diagnosis. They view it as a bogus claim by criminals attempting to evade responsibility for their actions. Ruff doesn't concern himself with the controversy, and presents Andrew and Penny as honest-to-god multiples. In a fantastic feat of character development, he not only makes Andrew and Penny vibrant and believable, but each of their alternate personalities as well. When Andrew conducts an internal discussion with Adam, the teen-aged boy soul in the "house," they speak with distinctly different voices. Penny's foul-mouthed "protector" personality, Maledicta, frequently wrests control of the body and wreaks havoc. In the reader's eye, she stands out as a character in her own right.

Alligators in the Sewers. Wait a minute, Eddie said. Alligators in the sewers? Wasn t that just a story? . — Sewer, Gas Electric, chapter one.
http://home.att.net/~Storytellers/sewrgatr.html
Alligators in the Sewers
"Wait a minute," Eddie said. "Alligators in the sewers? Wasn't that just a story?" chapter one how much basis in fact is a harder question to answer. In his book The World Beneath the City, Robert R. Daley told the tale of New York City Sewer Superintendent Teddy May, who in the mid-1930s began receiving reports of alligator sightings from his men. May initially assumed that the men had been drinking on duty, but when he went down into the tunnels to check on the matter personally, he saw the alligators too. Outraged, May organized an extermination campaign, and for the next several months his men shot, poisoned, or drowned every 'gator they could find. True story? A Cornell University zoologist I spoke to had his doubts, although, noting that the average "alligator" seen by May and his inspectors was only two feet long, he allowed that they might have been caimans, a related member of the crocodile family with a higher tolerance for low temperatures. As for how they got into the sewers, Daley's explanation is as plausible as any: they could have been abandoned pets that vacationing New Yorkers had brought home from Florida and then discarded once they got too big. The World Beneath the City is not the only source for New York alligator sightings. Throughout the 1930s, the
