Rudy Rucker Book Reviews
by Mac Tonnies For sheer extrapolative whimsy, Rudy Rucker's award-winning novels and stories are an essential starting point for readers who like their futures weirder than usual. Of the "original" cyberpunks (including Gibson Sterling and Shirley ), Rucker is without doubt the zaniest; his writing recalls both Kurt Vonnegut and William S. Burroughs. An "autobiographical" painting by Rucker. A mathematician and hacker with a number of nonfiction works to his credit (as well as a variety of user-friendly software programs), Rucker has coined the term "transrealism" to describe his pseudo-autobiographical fiction; while his stories are wacky beyond compare, it's usually not too difficult to make out a fictionalized Rucker lurking in the narrative, along with characterizations of friends and family. (The crafty and cerebral "Saucer Wisdom" is perhaps his most blatantly "transreal" novel to date.) Boppers: an A-life program by Rucker. Because of his unusual perspective, Rudy Rucker is perhaps best classed as an acquired taste; like his contemporaries, Rucker is delightfully impossible to pigeonhole. The complimentary anthologies of Rucker's essays and short fiction ("Seek!" and "Gnarl"!) ably demonstrate Rucker's prowess as a futurist, thinker and cybernetic philosopher. Reading Rucker is a rewarding experience, and I urge anyone with an open mind and high literary ideals to take the plunge. Related links: Rudy Rucker's official site (all things Rucker)

"The Hacker and the Ants"
Jerzy Rugby spends his days hacking away in cyberspace, to aid the GoMotion Corporation in its noble quest to bring truly intelligent robots into existence. Then an electronic ant gets into the machinery, then more ants. This book is just plain fun. I love his poke at realtors and fashion designers! Rucker says that having worked inside a Silicon Valley software company heavily influenced this ''transreal" novel.

Rudy Rucker is an author, mathematician, and computer scientist. He is known for his popular mathematics books "Infinity and the Mind" and "The Fourth Dimension" as well as for his numerous science-fiction novels, including "The Hacker and the Ants" and the cyberpunk classic "Software," now in production as a film by Phoenix Pictures. Rudy is a professor of computer science at San Jose State University. He has worked on a number of commercial software products, including "James Gleick's Chaos" and "Artificial Life Lab." A number of his artificial life, cellular automata, and graphics programs for Windows can be downloaded from his website www.mathcs.sjsu.edu/faculty/rucker Abstract of discussion:

A brief survey of the depiction of robots and man-made biological forms in science fiction, followed by an account of Rucker's own future history for artificial life, as traced through his "The Hacker And The Ants," the four volumes of his "Ware" series, and "Saucer Wisdom." Junk DNA by Rudy Rucker and Bruce Sterling Life was hard in old Silicon Valley. Little Janna Gutierrez was a native Valley girl, half Vietnamese, half Latino. She had thoughtful eyes and black hair in high ponytails. Her mother Shirley tried without success to sell California real estate. Her father Ruben plugged away inside cold, giant companies like Ctenephore and Lockheed Biological. The family lived in a charmless bungalow in the endless grid of San Jose. Janna ground her way through school and made it into U.C. Berkeley. She majored in computational genomics. Janna worked hard on software for hardwiring wetware, but her career timing was off. The latest pulse of biotech start-ups had already come and gone. Janna was reduced to a bottle-scrubbing job at Triple Helix, yet another subdivision of the giant Ctenephore conglomerate. In her glum and lonely evenings, Janna played you-are-her interactives, romance stories, with a climax where she would lip-synch a triumphant, tear-jerking video. On other nights Janna would toy wistfully with her decaying Goob collection. The youth market for the dolls had evaporated with the years. Now fanatical adult collectors were trading the Goobs, stiff and dusty artifacts of their lost consumer childhood.

Members log in During the years 1982-1986 I lived as a freelance writer in Lynchburg, Virginia. Eventually, living in Lynchburg became unfeasible. I was broke and getting deeper in debt, while our children were needing braces and college. Even if it was peaceful and cozy in Lynchburg, the bandwidth always seemed way too low - where the "bandwidth" of some information source means the number of bits per second that it delivers. What was really chafing on me the most was my strong sense that I was missing out on a great intellectual revolution: the dawn of computer-aided experimental mathematics. Fractals, chaos, cellular automata - it was everywhere. I clicked over the final switchpoint when I did some interviews to write an article on cellular automata. Those guys were having so much fun, looking at such neat things and making up such great theories about what they saw! I decided to become one of them. If you're already a mathematician, becoming a computer scientist is not so much a matter of new knowledge as a matter of new attitude. Born again. Willing to commit to the machine.

The Fourth Dimension - by Rudy Rucker
This book is subtitled, "A guide to the higher universes." In 1884 Edwin Abbott Abbott wrote the classic fantasy (and mathematics) story Flatland (subtitled "A romance in many dimensions"). Flatland has only two dimensions, and is populated with lines (females), triangles, squares, polygons, and circles. And these inhabitants see some things differently than we do. The idea is to teach the reader some things about a fourth dimension. Flatlanders cannot visualize a third dimension, and we have the same trouble with a fourth dimension. The story is mind expanding and well worth reading. The Fourth Dimension - by Rudy Rucker, expands upon Abbott's idea, taking it into curved space, and black holes, and beyond. It looks very good. I have not read much of it yet. Another book on the same subject is Beyond the Third Dimension by Thomas F. Banchoff and subtitled: "Geometry, Computer Graphics, and Higher Dimensions (Scientific American Library Series)." To order any of the above books from Amazon.com

by John Shirley Part Two - Rudy Rucker: Transreal
"White light messin up my mind
    Ooh don'tcha know
it's gonna make me go blind..."
the Velvet Underground, White Light/White Heat It was years ago, at a science fiction convention, and Rucker was weaving through a party, many storeys up in the sterile suite of a convention hotel. He'd come looking for a real party and he was finding only a convention party. So he decided to try to spark his own festivity. And he spotted a well known lady Scientologist...whereupon he latched onto her substantial leg and began to HUMP IT LIKE A DOG. He babbled poetically at her about taking that scientological broom out of her butt and loosening up, as she frantically sought to dislodge him... Well I've loved him ever since. Any mathematician, in his cups or not, who'll hump the leg of an uptight high-profile Scientologist he's okay with me. (More lady scientologists ought to get their legs humped in parties, but never mind...) Rudy's lifestyle has changed since then, perhaps, but not his spirit. He's a good family man, a working scientist, teacher, and disciplined author: and he's as free a spirit as they come, this side of learning the answer to the Death Koan. Peruse Rucker's early novel WHITE LIGHT. Better be told now: This novel is BIGGER than cyberpunk. This book is TRANSREAL.
