As the United States pushes for war on Iraq, Arundhati Roy, the internationally acclaimed author of The God of Small Things, addresses issues of democracy and dissent, racism and empire, and war and peace in this collection of new essays. War Talk collects new essays by this prolific writer. Her work highlights the global rise of religious and racial violence. From the horrific programs against Muslims in Gujarat, India, to U.S. demands for war on Iraq, Roy confronts the call to militarism. Desperately working against the backdrop of the nuclear recklessness between her homeland and Pakistan, she calls into question the equation of nation and ethnicity. And throughout her essays, Roy interrogates her own roles as "writer" and "activist." 2003, 154 pag., € 12,8

Do turkeys enjoy thanksgiving? By Arundhati Roy It's not good enough to be right. Sometimes, if only in order to test our resolve, it's important to win something. In order to win something, we need to agree on something." After a tour d'horizon, the author of The God of Small Things calls for a " minimum agenda" as well as a plan of action that prioritises global resistance to the U.S. occupation of Iraq. Here is the text of her speech at the opening Plenary of the World Social Forum in Mumbai on January 16, 2004:
Arundhati Roy In the great cities of Europe and America, where a few years ago these things would only have been whispered, now people are openly talking about the good side of Imperialism and the need for a strong Empire to police an unruly world. The new missionaries want order at the cost of justice. Discipline at the cost of dignity. And ascendancy at any price. Occasionally some of us are invited to `debate' the issue on `neutral' platforms provided by the corporate media. Debating Imperialism is a bit like debating the pros and cons of rape. What can we say? That we really miss it?

Arundhati Roy Reviews The God of Small Things (1997) Arundhati Roy, with her first novel The God of Small Things (Published in Great Britain by Flamingo, 1997, and in the United States by Random House, 1997), joins a long list of writers with Indian connections to have been awarded the prestigious Booker Prize. Founded in 1969, in an attempt to rescue the literary novel from feared extinction, the award has always been controversial, laying editors and judges alike open to criticism for the over-commercialisation of serious literature. Without it however, would so many authors from the English-speaking world have ever achieved worldwide renown?
Writers from Britain, the Irish Republic and countries which are, or have been, in the Commonwealth can enter. Among previous years' winners, several have chosen Indian settings: Ruth Prawer Jhabvala's Heat and Dust (1975) dealing with a woman travelling through India on the tracks of her grandmother, Paul Scott's Staying On , (1977), which explored the end of the Raj and the identity problems of Anglo-Indians, and Salman Rushdie's Midnight's Children (1981), which delved into post-Independence India.
