B C D ... Z by birthday from the calendar Credits and feedback Philip (Milton) Roth (1933-) American novelist and short story writer. Philip Roth first achieved fame with GOODBYE, COLUMBUS (1959). It consisted of a novella and five short stories and described the life of a of Jewish middle-class family. Ten years later appeared PORTNOY'S COMPLAINT. In this "masturbation story" the narrator searches for freedom by using sex as his way of escape. The book gained a great international success. "Between first discovering the Newark Bears and the Brooklyn Dodgers at seven or eight and first looking into Conrad's Lord Jim at age eighteen, I had done some growing up. I am only saying that my discovery of literature, and fiction particularly, and the 'love affair' - to some degree hopeless, but still earnest - that has ensued, derives in part from this childhood infatuation with baseball. Or, more accurately perhaps, baseball - with its lore and legends, its cultural power, its seasonal associations, its native authenticity, its simple rules and transparent strategies, its longueurs and thrills, its spaciousness, its suspensefulness, its heroics, its nuances, its lingo, its 'characters', its peculiarly hypnotic tedium, its mythic transformation of the immediate - was the literature of my boyhood." 3. BULLETIN 40 - PHILIP ROTH
Philip Roth. And don't forget Philip Roth. Following his progression as a writer is a Herculean task, but the results are well worth the pursuit.

Philip Roth
And don't forget Philip Roth. Following his progression as a writer is a Herculean task, but the results are well worth the pursuit. From the publication of the searingly astute look at the athletic, suburban, self-possessed Patimkin family in Goodbye, Columbus (1959), a collection of short stories which included "Defender of the Faith" (a remarkable study of an internal anti-Semitism a la Saul Bellow's The Victim (1947), Roth's caustic humor, his ability to see the absurd in all life situations, his querulous nature, his profound sensitivity to criticism, have permeated all his literature. Philip Roth has spent a career both justifying and rationalizing his writing of Portnoy's Complaint (1969). So maligned and criticized was he from all sectors of the Jewish community, including the American rabbinate, that his succeeding works seemed to be apologetic in nature; that is, they were written in defense of his craft. He took on an alter ego, Nathan Zuckerman, who showed up as Roth's fictional protagonist, maintaining throughout that his life was not Philip Roth's. At the beginning of Roth's autobiographical novel The Facts (1988), the author cites a passage attributed to Nathan Zuckerman in The Counterlife (1987): "And as he spoke I was thinking, the kind of stories that people turn life into, the kind of lives that people turn stories into." Philip Roth has inured as an author by turning sentences around in his most interesting and almost always stimulating novels. He is one of the most inventive Jewish authors of any period, and although his latest work Sabbath's Theater (1995) is more depressing than fecund, he must be read. Begin from the beginning - Goodbye, Columbus.

    Philip Roth
Philip Roth was born in 1933 in Newark, New Jersey, and grew up in the Jewish neighborhood of Weequahic. His early fiction frequently drew on Jewish culture and family life in Newark, and the story collection Goodbye, Columbus (1959) cemented his reputation as a top young American writer. Reviewing his youthful worldview, Roth (referring to himself in the third person) later wrote, "His cultural ambitions were formulated in direct opposition to the triumphant, suffocating American philistinism of that time: he despised Time Life , Hollywood, television, the best-seller list, advertising copy, McCarthysim, Rotary Clubs, racial prejudice, and the American booster mentality." After two long, serious, bleak novels, Roth was "aching to write something freewheeling and funny." In Portnoy's Complaint (1969), Roth blended ambiguous nostalgia for his Weequahic boyhood with ribald, delirious accounts of sexual adventures, including several notorious masturbation scenes. The book's narrator declared his intent to "put the id back in yid." This essential novel set the tone for the unflinching, absurdist look at human sexuality that runs through Roth's novels since. His attitude is no Utopian paean to the redemptive powers of sex, but rather a recognition of desire's powerful hold on the human psyche and a contempt for all attempts to repress or control that power through conventional morality. BIBLIOGRAPHY Goodbye, Columbus and Five Short Stories (1959)
