    Eccentric, egotistical, yet extremely sensitive, Dante Gabriel Rossetti was a force to be reckoned with. Early on, he alternated between painting and poetry, but he is best known for founding the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood along with John Everett Millais. Rebelling against English academic painting's soft forms and what appeared to be a lax morality, the Brotherhood aspired to a crisp, emotional style embracing the purity and simplicity of Italian art before Raphael. Using minute detail and elaborate symbolism, they painted from nature. Rossetti expanded the group's aims by linking poetry, painting, and social idealism and by interpreting the term Pre-Raphaelite as synonymous with a romanticized medieval past. In the second phase of the movement in the mid-1850s, Rossetti gained a powerful but exacting patron in the art critic John Ruskin. Throughout the 1850s and 1860s, Rossetti painted and drew mostly languid and sensuous female portraits, using his lover Elizabeth Siddal almost exclusively as a model. These paintings later influenced the Symbolists and also proved popular with collectors: Rossetti grew affluent enough to employ studio assistants to make copies.

    Dante Gabriel Rossetti
    16 October 2003 - 18 January 2004
    Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828-1882) was one of the most unusual and original of all Victorian artists. He was a founder member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. In his middle years he created vivid watercolours and intricate drawings on themes of love and morality. He is perhaps best known for his images of powerful and mysterious women. These dreamlike and erotic paintings have a magic that still speaks to us today. Rossetti created a new kind of art. He used colour, design and symbolism to suggest a mood and to convey the ideas that were important to him - female virtue, beauty, sensuality, love, death and destiny. This is the first major show of Rossetti's works since 1973. It includes over 150 items, featuring many of his most famous pieces. Here you can see a selection of these works and find out more about one of British art's most fascinating figures. Works Conserving Rossetti Chronology Merchandise ... LENORE
    by
    Göttfried August Bürger
    (Translated by Dante Gabriel Rossetti)
    Up rose Lenore as the red morn wore,
    From weary visions starting:
    "Art faithless, William, or, William, art dead?
    'Tis long since thy departing."
    For he, with Frederick's men of might,
    In fair Prague waged the uncertain fight;
    Nor once had he writ in the hurry of war,
    And sad was the true heart that sickened afar.
    The Empress and the King,
    With ceaseless quarrel tired,
    At length relaxed the stubborn hate
    Which rivalry inspired:
    And the martial throng, with laugh and song,
    Spoke of their homes as they rode along,
    And clank, clank, clank! came every rank,
    With trumpet-sound that rose and sank.
    And here and there and everywhere,
    Along the swarming ways,
    Went old man and boy, with the music of joy,
    On the gallant bands to gaze;
    And the young child shouted to spy the vaward,
    And trembling and blushing the bride pressed forward:
    But ah! for the sweet lips of Lenore
    The kiss and the greeting are vanished and o'er.
    From man to man all wildly she ran
    With a swift and searching eye;

Although the movement started to lose its attraction by the mid-1850s, new disciples Edward Burne-Jones and William Morris brought with them fresh enthusiasm. Rossetti's poems are distinguished by fantasy, leading the reader to times past, to medieval colour, Arthurian legend, and Dantesque mysticism. I have been here before,
    But when or how I cannot tell;
    I know the grass beyond the door,
    The sweet keen smell,
    The sighing sound, the lights around the shore.

    (from 'Sudden Light', 1881) For many years Rossetti was known only as a painter. On the other hand he had to face for some time the problem that his paintings were not bought. He idealized his subjects, and used literary themes of medieval romances. His early poems, such as 'The Blessed Damozel', a highly symbolic work, and 'My Sister's Sleep', in which death visits a family on a Christmas Eve, were published in the Pre-Raphaelite magazine The Germ in 1850. "I said, "Full knowledge does not grieve: / This which upon my spirit dwells / Perhaps would have been sorrow else: / But I am glad 'tis Christmas Eve." (from 'My Sister's Sleep') The publication survived for only four issues. Rossetti enjoyed a modest success as a writer when his translations in THE EARLY ITALIAN POETS appeared in 1861. Also the art critic Ruskin started to buy his paintings and spread Rossetti's reputation.

Her appearance was horrific; her hair consisted of waving snakes and she was capable of reducing people to stone by looking at them. She was loved by Poseidon with whom she lived in the mythic west. However Perseus came in search of her and slew her. At the moment of her death she gave birth to Pegasus and Chrysaor. The blood from her body was taken by Asclepius; blood from one vein was capable of reviving the dead, whereas that from another served as a lethal dose. In the history of art the subject of Perseus slaying Medusa is often taken, and the single head of Medusa is also portrayed. From an early time Medusa was represented as a beautiful girl, if with horrible attributes, in contradiction of the accounts of her exceeding ugliness in Greek Mythology. Rossetti wrote poetry, which took as its theme Perseus’s treatment of the Medusa:

    dante gabriel rossetti A Brief Biography. dante gabriel rossetti was born in London on 12 May 1828 and he died on Easter Day, 9 April 1882.
    http://jefferson.village.virginia.edu/rossetti/dgrbio.html
    Dante Gabriel Rossetti: A Brief Biography Dante Gabriel Rossetti was born in London on 12 May 1828 and he died on Easter Day, 9 April 1882. He spent nearly his entire working life in the city of his birth, and indeed he only left Great Britain three times, in each case but the first quite briefly. Though his work is steeped in Italian traditions (both poetical and pictorial), DGR never visited Italy. He is first and always an English more, a London writer and artist. His father was the celebrated (and controversial) Dante scholar and Italian political exile Gabriele Rossetti. His mother Frances, much younger than her husband, was Anglo-Italian Polidori on her father's side. (Her grandfather, Dr. John Polidori, was Byron's doctor and companion during the first part of his exile from England in 1816.) DGR had three siblings, two younger than himself. All were remarkable. His sister Christina became as distinguished a poet as her brother. His brother William Michael, a writer himself, edited his brother's work after the latter's death and served as the first archivist and historian of the Pre-Raphaelite movement. His other sister was the oldest child, Maria Francesca; she published a commentary on Dante and became an Anglican nun. DGR's interests in writing and painting appeared early, encouraged by his immediate family life as well as by the literary interests of his grandfather Polidori. The children were writing in the early 1840s and DGR was also beginning to draw and paint. He went to Sass's drawing school in 1841 and in 1845 moved to the Antique School of the Royal Academy. He did not work well under academic tutelage, however, and in 1848 he dropped away from school altogether.

    An interesting man was Mr Dante Gabriel Rosetti. His origins were slightly unconventional, his father being an exiled Italian who who became professor of Italian at King's College in London, and he was brought up with a brother who became an eminent art critic, and two artistically-inclined sisters, one of whom became a famous poetess. From an early age Dante developed a Bohemian lifestyle - his collection of wombats creating something of a stir - and he took to mysticism and religion, immersing himself in Arthurian legendry. It was rumoured that many of his beliefs were as much the result of a fondness for laudanum as any other cause.

    Walter Pater's "Dante Gabriel Rossetti" versus His "Aesthetic Poetry"
    Andrew Leng, Nanyang Technological University, National Institute of Education, Singapore
    iagnosing what he sees as another case of Victorian failure, William Buckler suggests that readers who had enjoyed Pater's "Aesthetic Poetry," the revised version of his seminal review of "Poems by William Morris," would be disappointed by its sequel, "Dante Gabriel Rossetti," an essay Pater billed as a study of "another 'aesthetic' poet." Buckler feels that Pater fails "to fulfill his promise, given at the end of "Aesthetic Poetry," of addressing the theme of 'the desire of beauty quickened by the sense of death as further exemplification of the pagan spirit in aesthetic poetry'" [168]. While Buckler is right to regard "Dante Gabriel Rossetti" as tame in comparison with "Aesthetic Poetry," his subsequent claim that the former "lacks artistic shape" fails to take into account the strong shaping force exerted on Pater's conception of Rossetti's poetry by Ruskin's changing view of his painting. For "Dante Gabriel Rossetti" is shaped in opposition to Ruskin's 1883 lectures on Pre-Raphaelitism , although drawing extensively on their moral-aesthetic art critical terminology while subverting their judgments, a fact which largely accounts for the relative sobriety of the essay as a study of aestheticism.
