Yet if you should forget me for a while
And afterwards remember, do not grieve:
For if the darkness and corruption leave
A vestige of the thoughts that once I had,
Better by far you should forget and smile
Than that you should remember and be sad. (Remember, 9-14)

    Christina Rossetti
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Christina Georgina Rossetti December 5 December 29 ) was an English poet and the sister of Dante Gabriel Rossetti . Their father, Gabriele Rossetti, was a political asylum seeker from Naples , and their mother, Frances Polidori, was the sister of Lord Byron 's friend and physician, John William Polidori Born in London and educated privately, she suffered ill-health in her youth, but was already writing poetry in her teens. Her engagement to a painter, James Collinson , was broken off because of religious differences (she was High Church Anglican ). She also rejected a somewhat less than reputable proposition from John Ruskin Here's friendship for you if you like; but love, No, thank you, John. She produced her first published verse under the pseudonym Ellen Alleyne. Many of her poems were aimed at children. Christina rejected the social world of her brother's " Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood", preferring "my shady crevice which crevice enjoys the unique advantage of being to my certain knowledge the place assigned me."

Christina Rossetti, who wrote for The Germ under the pseudonym “Ellen Alleyn,” (a pseudonym invented by her brother Dante Gabriel) was the first Pre-Raphaelite to enjoy widespread literary success. Her Goblin Market and Other Poems , published in 1862, brought her popular attention and critical acclaim, as did her devotional poems and essays. Christina Georgina Rossetti was born in London December 5, 1830, the youngest of Gabriele and Frances Polidori Rossetti’s four children. Like her older siblings, Christina began writing and drawing at an early age. Her grandfather Polidori, who doted on Christina, had a collection of her verses privately published in 1847. Her first public poems appeared in the Athenaeum when she was only eighteen. She wrote prolifically throughout her life. Christina Rossetti’s writings reflect her deep religious devotion. She was a High Church Anglican and a disciple of Tractarianism (also know as the Oxford Movement), a radically conservative position. When she was about 13, Christina began attending Christ Church (a Tractarian hotbed) with her mother and sister Maria. About this time (roughly 1842-1847), Christina went through a transformation that her friends and family were at a loss to explain. As a girl, Christina Rossetti was spirited, passionate, and hot-tempered to the point of self-destruction: she reports once ripping her arm with scissors after her mother chastised her for some small offense. Her brother William Michael Rossett wrote that “In innate character she was vivacious and open to pleasurable impressions, and during girlhood, one might readily have supposed that she would develop into a woman of expansive heart, fond of society and diversions, and taking part in them of more than average brilliancy.”

    Sappho and Christina Rossetti
    Alison Womble
ike Sappho , Christina Rossetti also wrote out of her assigned place in society . Unlike Sappho, there were a handful of women writing during Rossetti's own lifetime. Lately, there has also been a resurgence of scholarship concerning Christina Rossetti. She wrote roughly eleven hundred poems that were eventually organized into collections. She wrote children's poems, short stories, lyric poems, and sonnets, to name just a few; Rossetti was prolific to say the least. But while she was prolific, she was not necessarily accepted. Victorian codes still existed, and they restrained women from being as active as men in society. The sheer fact that she was a woman kept Christina out of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood , a group of writers and painters who included her two brothers . Christina Rossetti slowly, but surely, made her own mark on the Victorian world, a mark that took a long time to show because she was continually on the outside, in the margins. Rossetti had her own circle in which she was educated: the coterie of the family. Christina and her sister Maria followed typical Victorian custom; girls did not attend a formal school as did the boys. All four Rossetti children
