Christina Rossetti

    Rossetti, Christina Up-Hill
Genre Poem Keywords Aging Death and Dying Disease and Health Pain ... Suffering Summary The poem is an exchange of questions and answers that compares life to a journey. The journey is up-hill all the way, but at the end is an inn, a resting place, that cannot be missed and which has a room for everyone. Commentary The poem is typical of C. Rossetti's religious poetry and the more tight-laced aspects of the Victorian period. Life is recognized as a painful task (it's up-hill all the way), yet it is the duty of mankind to undertake the trip in hopes of a peaceful rest in heaven as a reward. This message had social ramifications in the mid-late Victorian period, when many were sacrificed to the unceasing demands of growing capitalist production and imperialism. The starving seamstress ought not complain, but travel on. Pain and suffering are to be expected, not resisted; one benefits from them in the end. Or search the encyclopaedia: Rossetti, Christina Georgina Goblin market , with its daringly explicit and sensual imagery, is regarded by many as a masterpiece of modern sexual radicalism.
English poet and a devout High Anglican (see Oxford movement ). Her best-known work is Goblin Market and Other Poems Annus Domini (1874), and A Pageant (1881). She was the sister of Dante Gabriel Rossetti and William Michael Rossetti. Her verse expresses unfulfilled spiritual yearning and frustrated love. She was a skilful technician and made use of irregular rhyme and line length. Christina was the daughter of an Italian patriot, educated at home, and sharing in the youthful writings of her brothers. Her first recorded poem was completed at the age of 12. In 1847 a volume of her verses was privately printed, and in 1850, using the pseudonym Ellen Alleyne, she contributed to the famous but short-lived periodical The Germ (which was linked to the artistic theory of the group of painters the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood ). The sadness that pervades her writing may be due to an unhappy love affair in her youth, and to the ill health she constantly suffered.

    Rossetti, Christina
English lyric poet, born in London. Although some of her earliest verse was published in the Germ (1850), a Pre-Raphaelite journal, and she sat as a model for a number of paintings by her brother Dante Gabriel Rossetti and other Pre-Raphaelites, she was not a member of the movement.
Much of Rossetti's work was religious in nature; the themes of renunciation of earthly love and concern with death shadow such favorite poems as "When I Am Dead, My Dearest" and "Up-Hill." Other poems, such as "A Birthday," are earthy, romantic, and sensuous. Rossetti's work encompasses a wide range of styles and forms. Her ballads, sonnets, love lyrics, and nonsense rhymes are all clearly products of an accomplished mind.
A devout Anglican, Rossetti spent the last 15 years of her life as a recluse. At the same time, however, Rossetti wrote delightful verse for children, such as the charming lyrics in Sing-Song: A Nursery Rhyme Book (1872). The most important collections of her work are Goblin Market and Other Poems (1862), considered her finest poetry, and The Prince's Progress and Other Poems (1866).
