The Life of Christina Rossetti
Glenn Everett , Associate Professor of English, University of Tennessee at Martin
Christina Georgina Rossetti, one of the most important women poets writing in nineteenth-century England, was born in London December 5, 1830, to Gabriele and Frances (Polidori) Rossetti. Although her fundamentally religious temperament was closer to her mother's, this youngest member of a remarkable family of poets, artists, and critics inherited many of her artistic tendencies from her father. Judging from somewhat idealized sketches made by her brother Dante, Christina as a teenager seems to have been quite attractive if not beautiful. In 1848 she became engaged to James Collinson, one of the minor Pre-Raphaelite brethren, but the engagement ended after he reverted to Roman Catholicism When Professor Rossetti's failing health and eyesight forced him into retirement in 1853, Christina and her mother attempted to support the family by starting a day school, but had to give it up after a year or so. Thereafter she led a very retiring life, interrupted by a recurring illness which was sometimes diagnosed as angina and sometimes tuberculosis. From the early '60s on she was in love with Charles Cayley, but according to her brother William, refused to marry him because "she enquired into his creed and found he was not a Christian." Milk-and-water Anglicanism was not to her taste. Lona Mosk Packer argues that her poems conceal a love for the painter William Bell Scott, but there is no other evidence for this theory, and the most respected scholar of the Pre-Raphaelite movement disputes the dates on which Packer thinks some of the more revealing poems were written.

    http://www.lovepoetry.org.uk
    Love Lost
Poetry of love, tinged with sadness.
Despite twice falling in love and receiving proposals of marriage Christina Georgina Rossetti died alone, a spinster. A devout Christian, she felt that marriage was inconsistent with her religious scruples so for most of her adult life she attended upon her mother, a devout evangelist, and spent her later years as an invalid, shunning company. It is hardly surprising that a deep mood of unhappiness pervades much of her romantic poetry. The First Day A Pause Remember Song ... loans uk

Christina Rossetti, who wrote for The Germ under the pseudonym “Ellen Alleyn,” (a pseudonym invented by her brother Dante Gabriel) was the first Pre-Raphaelite to enjoy widespread literary success. Her Goblin Market and Other Poems , published in 1862, brought her popular attention and critical acclaim, as did her devotional poems and essays. Christina Georgina Rossetti was born in London December 5, 1830, the youngest of Gabriele and Frances Polidori Rossetti’s four children. Like her older siblings, Christina began writing and drawing at an early age. Her grandfather Polidori, who doted on Christina, had a collection of her verses privately published in 1847. Her first public poems appeared in the Athenaeum when she was only eighteen. She wrote prolifically throughout her life. Christina Rossetti’s writings reflect her deep religious devotion. She was a High Church Anglican and a disciple of Tractarianism (also know as the Oxford Movement), a radically conservative position. When she was about 13, Christina began attending Christ Church (a Tractarian hotbed) with her mother and sister Maria. About this time (roughly 1842-1847), Christina went through a transformation that her friends and family were at a loss to explain. As a girl, Christina Rossetti was spirited, passionate, and hot-tempered to the point of self-destruction: she reports once ripping her arm with scissors after her mother chastised her for some small offense. Her brother William Michael Rossett wrote that “In innate character she was vivacious and open to pleasurable impressions, and during girlhood, one might readily have supposed that she would develop into a woman of expansive heart, fond of society and diversions, and taking part in them of more than average brilliancy.”

Rossetti, Christina (1830-1894) Her sexuality repressed by religion, Christina Rosetti wrote poetry that included highly-charged erotic female-to-female affection. Rossetti was born on December 5, 1830, to Gabriele and Frances Polidori Rossetti. Her father was Italian, her mother half English and half Italian, and Rossetti grew up speaking both languages. Her family was skilled in literature and the arts. Her sister Maria was to write a study of Dante and eventually become an Anglican nun, her brother Dante Gabriel was to become a famous painter and poet, and her brother William a literary critic and the family's chronicler. Sponsor Message.
Rossetti seems to have been a bright, happy child, but her temperament mysteriously changed in her early teens, and she became serious and introspective. The Rossetti household had always been a religious one of an Evangelical cast. In the 1840s, the family turned to Anglo-Catholicism. The rituals and beliefs of Christina's religion were to influence the direction of the rest of her life very deeply. From ages eighteen to twenty, she was often ill; one doctor diagnosed her illness as "religious mania." Just before she turned seventeen, she accepted a proposal of marriage from a minor artist of her brother's circle, James Collinson, a recent convert from Catholicism. She broke off the engagement when he converted back. To break off an engagement on religious grounds was not unusual for a devout woman of the nineteenth century, but the experience was to become emblematic of the life of renunciation that she would lead.

Youngest of the four Rossetti children. Because of her bad health she was often at home with her mother. Like her, she was a strict Anglican. Her engagement with the painter James Collinson was broken off because he was a Catholic. In 1866 she rejected Charles Bagot Cayley (with whom she was in love) because she did not consider him to be a christian. They remained friends. She wrote poetry and stories, some of them illustrated by her brother Dante Gabriel. Work: "Goblin Market and Other Poems" (1862); "The Prince's Progress and Other Poems" (1866); "Sing-Song: a Nursery Rhyme Book" (1872); "Speaking Likenesses"; "Letter and Spirit".
