Christina Rossetti "The Key-Note" Christina Rossetti was born in 1830 in London. She was published in the Germ , the Pre-Raphaelite journal, and sat for a number of paintings by the Pre-Raphaelites , including some by her brother Dante Gabriel Rossetti The existential themes in her poetry turned from unrequited love tothe renunciation of earthly love. Death hovered above all of her work, like the demon in Fuseli's Nightmare . Christina Rossetti's famous poem "Goblin's Market" is an amazing meditation on women as sexual prey. She was a devout Anglican who never married. There's this sexist assumption that something is solemn about women who never marry. Men who don't marry seem roguish and sexually charged. Anyway, she died in 1894. Christina Rossetti's poems may seem dated now, but the subject matter is still relevant. I experimented with some of her poems, William S. Burroughs cut-up style, and here's what I came up with:

"Sonnets are full of love..."
Sonnets are full of love, and this my tome
Has many sonnets: so here now shall be
One sonnet more, a love sonnet, from me
To her whose heart is my heart's quiet home,
To my first Love, my Mother, on whose knee
I learnt love-lore that is not troublesome;
Whose service is my special dignity,
And she my loadstare while I go and come
And so because you love me, and because
I love you, Mother, I have woven a wreath
Of rhymes wherewith to crown your honored name:
In you not fourscore years can dim the flame
Of love, whose blessed glow transcends the laws
Of time and change and mortal life and death.
Monna Innominata: A Sonnet of Sonnets
BEATRICE, immortalized by "altissimo poeta. . . cotanto amante;" Laura, celebrated by a great though an inferior bard, have alike paid the exceptional penalty of exceptional honor, and have come down to us resplendent with charms, but (at least, to my apprehension) scant of attractiveness. These heroines of world-wide fame were preceded by a bevy of unnamed ladies "donne innominate" sung by a school of less conspicuous poets; and in that land and that period which gave simultaneous birth to Catholics, to Albigenses, and to Troubadours, one can imagine many a lady as sharing her lover's poetic aptitude, while the barrier between them might be one held sacred by both, yet not such as to render mutual love incompatible with mutual honor.

    Christina Georgina Rossetti
Christina Rossetti was the youngest child of Italian parents living in England. Like her mother and sister, she was an extremely religious high Anglican. She was influenced by the Oxford Movement, and may well have refused suitors on the grounds that their religious views were not consonant with hers. Her sister Maria joined an Anglican sisterhood, and Christina herself remained single, living at home with her mother. She briefly pursued the possibility of teaching or nursing, but eventually turned to writing. In the 1860s she volunteered in a home for fallen women. Christina Rossetti's family encouraged her to write, and through her brothers, William Michael and Dante Gabriel Rossetti , she was introduced to many of the leading artistic personages and ideas of the day, particularly those associated with the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood of which Dante Gabriel was a member. Altogether, she produced over 900 poems in English and 60 in Italian, of which many are religious lyrics. Among women poets of her day, she particularly admired Elizabeth Barrett Browning Augusta Webster , and, towards the close of the century, Emily Dickinson.

'A Birthday,' 'When I Am Dead,' and 'Up-Hill' are probably Rossetti's best-known single works. After a serious illness in 1874, she rarely received visitors or went outside her home. Her favorite themes were unhappy love, death, and premature resignation. Especially her later works deal with somber religious feelings. Does the road wind uphill all the way?
    Yes, to the very end.
Will the day's journey take the whole long day?
From morn to night, my friend.

(from 'Up-Hill', 1861) Christina Rossetti was born in London, one of four children of Italian parents. Her father was the poet Gabriele Rossetti (1783-1854), professor of Italian at King's College from 1831. He resigned in 1845 because of blindness. All the four children in the family became writers, Dante Gabriel also gained fame as a painter. Christina was educated at home by her mother, Frances Polidori, a former governess, an Anglican of devout evangelical bent. She shared her parents' interest in poetry and was portrayed in the paintings and drawings of the Pre-Raphaelites. Christina was the model for his brother's picture The Girlhood of Mary Virgin (1849), which was the first picture to be signed P.R.B. Jan Marsh has proposed in her biography
