    - Book Review, by Ross, Sinclair
    Inside Flap Copy

?It?s an immense night out there, wheeling and windy. The lights on the street and in the houses against the black wetness, little unilluminating glints that might be painted on it. The town seems huddled together, cowering on a high tiny perch, afraid to move lest it topple into the wind.?

The town is Horizon, the setting of Sinclair Ross? brilliant classic study of life in the Depression era. Hailed by critics as one of Canada?s great novels, As For Me and My House takes the form of a journal. The unnamed diarist, one of the most complex and arresting characters in contemporary fiction, explores the bittersweet nature of human relationships, of the unspoken bonds that tie people together, and the undercurrents of feeling that often tear them apart. Her chronicle creates an intense atmosphere, rich with observed detail and natural imagery.
As For Me and My House is a landmark work. It is essential reading for anyone who seeks to understand the scope and power of the Canadian novel.

As For Me and My House
is a masterpiece of Canadian literature, a stunning evocation of the Prairies and their inhabitants during the Depression of the Thirties. With The Lamp at Noon and Other Stories , an original New Canadian Library collection, Ross reveals further dimensions of his fictional universe.
The sensitivity, compassion, and subtlety with which Ross portrays human aspirations and failings remain to this day unequalled in Canadian fiction.

I bought my first real computer way back in December of 1982. It had a rubber keyboard, effectively a 256x192 resolution monochrome display, 48k user ram and NO MOUSE. It was a great little machine, and there were some great games- long before everyone began doing Doom and Streetfighter clones. The little 8-bit Z80 processer ticked away at a mere 4mhz, yet seemed to run games a lot faster than some games do on my 200mhz pentium pro. Of course, you had to load and save to audio cassettes which was a real pain. Luckily there are several emulators for the PC, Mac and Unix based systems and there are snapshots for almost every game produced. I worked on several Spectrum games, from 1983 to 1990. Some were better than others, but all were fun to create. Of course, back then we didn't seem to need separate producers, designers, directors and other middlemen all organising things for you- yet the games still seemed to get done on time!
..SCREENSHOTS.. (Click on the screenshots to download snapshots of these games )
CURSED BE THE CITY The last game I worked on as programmer and artist. A text based adventure that came in 2 versions- one with some graphics and a text-only version ( with unreadable font but longer descriptions ). Unfortunately, I only have a snapshot of the text-only version. If anyone out there has the graphic version, please

I started working on console games around 1990, some a lot better than others- far too many film and TV licenses. Here is a selection of some I did ( and still have the graphics for! ).
      ..SCREENSHOTS..
NOAH'S ARK The first big NES game. My boss ( at the time ) went to the 1990 winter CES and managed to sell this game idea to several interested parties. Oh, his idea- a game about Noah and his Ark. That's it, that's the whole game design! In retrospect however, it was a lot more informative and usefull than many I've come across by ( so-called ) professional designers. It was never released in the states ( too many bugs in the ntsc version ) but the UK version got to number 1 in the charts- for about a week! SCARABEUS (AKA PYRAMIDS OF RA) When the gameboy came out, I was interested into programming again. The processor in the gameboy was basically a cut-down Z80, something I'd worked on before. So I designed this clever puzzle game that ( from a technical standpoint ) was as simple as can be, so I could code it myself. It was given to someone else, who took 18 months and had to simplify the mechanics further. Indeed, he couldn't even get alternate graphics in the game- they're the same ALL THE WAY THROUGH! AYSO SOCCER Another NES game, it was an attempt to create a playable soccer game on the console. The graphics were all done ( at least to useable standard ) but the gameplay and logic failed to appear from the programmer...

Lifetime Award for Excellence in the Arts, 1993

James Sinclair Ross is one of Canada's finest craftsmen of the novel and short story. He is the author of 4 novels and 18 short stories, published between 1934 and 1974, many of which uniquely capture the harsh lives of prairie people during the Depression years. Largely unheralded as a writer until his seminal 1941 novel As For Me and My House was reprinted in Canada in 1957, he kept his job at the Royal Bank until his retirement in 1968. The power of his work is credited with influencing many Canadian prairie writers.
