work points to his interest in the contrasting nature of the outside and inside of things. Within his structures the audience finds themselves outside the traditional site for art and, paradoxically, inside the work itself. The great dualities in his work, at times harmonious and at times schizophrenic, but always honest about the intimacy of opposites, are: the real and the spectacular, the public and the private, the content and the context, the object and the event. Ross Sinclair, REAL LIFE....and how to live with it, 2001
Neonarbeit, Rauminstallation
Courtesy: The Agency Gallery, London

Ross Sinclair,
An open letter to whomsoever it may concern regarding: Scotland
- A brief and fractured introduction to the history of the1983 - 2083
Thinking about the things that people forgot about because they weren't written down in history books. The year is 2083 Anno Domini and Transmission Gallery is one hundred years old today. The place is The Peoples' Republic of Scotia, a small, nothern European nation with agreeably changeable weather. More than twenty years have passed since Scotland achieved its long cherished ambition, Independence from England and the Crown. However, this occurred at some cost to the Scottish people...
The Path to Freedom?
At the Stirling Bridge Referendum of 2061, a handsome majority of the Scottish people decided that they wished to secede from the United Kingdom of Great Britain. There were five million or so inhabitants in this poor, damp, country, for so long under the sword of one conquering invader or another. And this populace eventually decided, once and for all, to leave the Union in order to implement a novel plan to completely re-invent the Nation in a manner never before heard of anywhere in the world. The new official name they chose for the re-invented Scotland, from those suggested, was: Scotia - The Living History of a Small Nation. At first glance this may sound like a strange name for a small country, newly independent after 500 years of struggle, but to explain this unprecedented move: the Scots had voted en masse to turn the whole country, and everyone in it, into the world's first national scale historical theme park. And it was to be of truly epic proportions.

"What's exciting about the artists featured in Visions
for the Future is that they can't be corralled into a neat media package or niche theme... An energising double-whammy of visual art that bodes well for the future."

ANNE DONALD, The Herald.
October 2000 "I'm glad to see the Fruitmarket filling a gap in Scotland's contemporary art scene which normally studiously ignores talent under its nose till it's too late. Where do you go to see work by Glasgow graduates Jenny Saville or Douglas Gordon?
Ironically the nearest place is probably New York."

Sept, 1999 by Michael Archer
THE AGENCY As part of Ross Sinclair's recent show, he ran a stall in one of London's street markets for a day. You could buy T-shirts, mugs, key rings, and pens, all bearing the legend "I Real Life." For Sinclair, "real life" is not something that exists but something dreamed of or longed for, something that exerts itself as an idealized possibility out of the more immediate situation of cultural uncertainty. This was confirmed by The Hamnavoe Free State [Library], 1999, which featured a low table heaped with books covering relevant subjects, among them student activism, urban guerrilla movements, and Orkney mythology. There was also a copy of Guy Debord's 1967 Society of the Spectacle, while on the wall above, two posters covered in another camouflage pattern bore the words "REAL LIFE" and "SPECTACULAR LIFE." By now the two were becoming hard to distinguish. Another work comprised a neon sign and four photos, including one of the huge yellow ramp Sinclair built on the quayside in Stromness for his show there. We saw it here alongside other images of Hamnavoe and the nearby island of Hoy, all framed under glass so that the London show was reflected back into the earlier exhibition. Originally attached to the ramp, on the floor nearby was the neon sign "GRACE," made by the artist at the time of his eponymous daughter's birth. Some things are real.

This article, by Ross Sinclair of the SSC Megapode Specialist Group first appeared in issue 37 of Species , the SSC newsletter.
The coup in 1999 and subsequent economic collapse in the Solomon Islands has resulted in the islanders being even more dependent on their natural resources for sustenance and cash. Nowhere is this more true than on Simbo Island, where local people derive most of their cash income from the sale of eggs of the Melanesian megapode ( Megapodius eremita ), locally called Lape.

No future without dreams! Each person possesses the power to live to his or her full potential, to make the impossible possible. Ross Sinclair calls out to us: assume responsibility already in dreams.
"LKW Lebenskunstwerke" consciously crosses the borders between "art" and "life": artistic utopias do not remain designs, but become experience and experiment. Models "between design and social sculpture, between factory life and commune experience" (Paolo Bianchi) are shown on the four floors of the Kunsthaus.
