      • A fantasy series about a group of gamers who get transported to their GM's fantasy world in character. Originally, they have a quest from the GM, but they soon start leading lives of their own and start a war with the powerful establishment of this new world. Very exciting series, but falls off a bit for the last two books. All are worth reading. I have recently written a full-length review of this series if you want to read more about it.
    • The Road Home
    • Not Exactly the Three Musketeers
      • This is another book set in the "Guardians of the Flame" world, but again, the story is centered on new, indigenous characters rather than the crossover characters from the original novels. In this case, the three protagonists are guards for the "good guys", and they are sent on a mission that unwillingly involves them in noble politics that are not made clear until near the very end. For about the first 80% of the novel, it looks as though the whole story will revolve around the somewhat interesting (but rarely humorous, as the title might lead you to expect) exploits of the three soldiers. Once the big picture is revealed and the main villain is unmasked, the last 20% is as gripping and fun to read as anything Rosenberg has written to date. This continues to be a very reliable, high quality series.

Though spread over three continents, the attacks on the four cities are almost simultaneous. In Denver, the President of the United States coming home for the Thanksgiving Holiday barely escapes the assassination attempt. London, Paris, and Riyadh are not quite as fortunate as terrorists cause mass destruction. Later evidence ties these deadly assassins to Saddam Hussein who has sent other operatives around the world to do his bidding.
A new hope for peace arises in the Middle East when oil is discovered off the coast of Gaza. The President sends his friend Jon Bennett, accompanied by Erin McCoy, to broker a lasting peace between Israel and Palestine. However, before the negotiations can be completed, Israel recovers proof that Iraq has nuclear warheads that Hussein used with a SCUD and further evidence that the “Butcher of Baghdad” plans to turn DC, New York, and Tel Aviv into metallic salt. Either Israel or America must resolutely destroy Baghdad and its innocent Muslim population to stop Hussein's global threat. THE LAST JIHAD is an exciting post 9/11 thriller that never slows down until the final page is read. Especially terrifying is the reality of the key premise of how easy hijacking a private aircraft is.

God of Abraham, God of Isaac
by Joel Rosenberg
An Aramean fugitive, my father, Abraham,
an atheist, refused to serve the gods.
"The gods," he'd say, "are merely an excuse
for people to enslave each other."
So he sought a non-religion,
a precise refusal of all servitude to god or man,
and picked up followers in Ur, and in Haran.
In debt up to his neck to Eliezer of Damascus,
Abram gleaned the other debt-slaves, pickpockets,
sharecroppers, the unemployed, some blacks,
rebellious women, poets, clownsand ran. They hustled to the hills together, formed a band, and learned to fight, and, intermittently, to wheel-and-deal. They entertained, and rented themselves out as soldiers, tinkers, busboys, builders, midwives, popular musicians. Here and there, they managed to grab up a little land. In time, they gave their non-religion an unpronounceable and secret name, which meant, some jokingly maintained, just "Let it be." Their women They would laughingly address as "sisters," especially in front of country folk, because they knew the villagers would be enraged to find them treating "wives" as equals.

THE SILVER STONE
by Joel Rosenberg
Avon Books
346pp/$5.99/July 1998 Reviewed by Steven H Silver Joel Rosenberg made his name in fantasy writing the "Guardians of the Flame" series in which a group of college students are magically transported to a magical realm during a role-playing game. After several books in that series and two other series, Rosenberg has returned to that same sub-genre with his "Keepers of the Hidden Ways" series in which college students are transported to a magical realm. The Silver Stone is the second book of the new series and follows Ian Silverstein, Torrie Thorsen and their companions as they return to the mythical land of Tir Na Nog. While Rosenberg's earlier series was set in a (to star wtih) generic fantasy setting, this new series relies heavily on Norse mythology, including appearances of Odin, Freya, and other standards of the Vikings, although frequently in skewed roles. Unfortunately, this setting does not work as well as the wide variety of lands Rosenberg has invented, whether the world of the Guardians novels or the vaguely Oriental lands of his "D'Shai" series. Rosenberg uses several viewpoint characters, both the aforementioned college students and the parents and friends of Torrie Thorsen, who hails, ostensibly, from Hardwood, North Dakota (in the Newer World), but really has his roots in Tir Na Nog. Nearly all these characters are representative of the Heinleinian superman (or woman), with the ability to do anything which needs to be done and, perhaps more importantly, the common sense to see what needs doing. Unfortunately, this has a tendency to turn several of Rosenberg's characters more into caricatures.

THE CRIMSON SKY
by Joel Rosenberg
Avon Eos
341pp/$5.99/December 1998 Reviewed by Steven H Silver Throughout the "Keepers of the Hidden Ways" series, it is clear that Joel Rosenberg's characters have been moving between the mundane world of Hardwood, ND and the fantastic world of Tir Na Nog. In The Crimson Sky , the third "Hidden Ways" novel, Rosenberg discloses that there are three worlds. Tir Na Nog, Hardwood and . . . Minneapolis, MN. Rosenberg's Minneapolis takes all the evils of big city life and exaggerates them. While everyone in Hardwood is neighborly and takes care of each other, exhibiting tolerance for everyone (with a few notable exceptions), the city is a cold and unforgiving place. I would rather walk through dangerous areas of New York, Washington or Chicago than live in the Minneapolis Rosenberg portrays. That said, the scenes which are set in Minneapolis are much more interesting than the scenes set in Tir Na Nog. Throughout the three novels which make up the "Keepers of the Hidden Ways," Rosenberg has failed to make his Tir Na Nog more than an unreal faerie realm. While much of the action takes place there, the reader still gets the feeling that the real story, and the real tension, remains in our own world. Ian Silverstein's third trip to Tir Na Nog is reminiscent of the first two. Thorian Thorsen, Torrie, Maggie and Jeff Bjerke trying to find one of the Sons of Fenris in Minneapolis brings something new to the series.

Tom Clancy rocks.
There, I just had to get that off my chest. And now you know my secret - that even though I could be called a snob when it comes to fiction, I have a soft spot for fast-paced global political thrillers in which Americans are always the good guys. It's my own form of escapism.
That's why when I read that Joel C. Rosenberg's latest book was "Clancyesque" it was a good omen in my eyes. Indeed, THE LAST DAYS, the bestselling sequel to the bestselling THE LAST JIHAD, is a breathless geopolitical roller coaster ride. It follows on the heels of THE LAST JIHAD's war on terrorism plotline to focus on the potential for peace between Israel and her Arab neighbors.
The cast of characters is familiar to readers of THE LAST JIHAD and Jon Bennett, Wall Street strategist come senior White House advisor, takes the lead as the architect of a plan for peace between Israel and Palestine. Its basis? Vast oil reserves found in the region stand to make every Palestinian and Israeli man, woman and child wealthy beyond their dreams if they can just learn to work together.
Assassinations and attempted assassinations ensue. A Palestinian civil war breaks out and several shadowy groups with their own interests do their best to wreak havoc with attacks on sensitive locals such as the Dome of the Rock and Washington D.C. Admittedly, for reasons I'll talk about in a moment, I wanted to put this book down. But I couldn't. I was hooked and had to know what would happen next. Perhaps my biggest endorsement of the book would be the fact that I stayed up until 3AM to finish it.

Produced by Syria, not Mel Gibson! By Joel C. Rosenberg
(WASHINGTON, D.C., February 25, 2004 Note: National Review Online has posted this article as a lead story today. Go to http://www.nationalreview.com .)
Israeli Cabinet Minister Natan Sharansky went to Berlin in January to show German, French and other European officials excerpts of a vicious, anti-Semitic film.
With all the media attacks on Mel Gibson and his new film, you might think Sharansky showed excerpts of The Passion of the Christ. He did not.
Sharansky, for whom I briefly worked in 2000, wanted European officials to see a real anti-Semitic film. So he showed them excerpts of Al-Shatat ("The Diaspora"), a $5.1 million, 30-part "mini-series" produced by Syrian television. It was broadcast during Ramadan last year by Al-Mansar, Hezbollah's satellite television network. The film is "a Syrian TV series recording the criminal history of Zionism," according to a November 11, 2003 report in the Syria Times.
Episode Twenty of Al-Shatat which aired last November depicts a classic anti-Semitic blood libel. A Rabbi, played by an Arab actor, directs a member of his synagogue to help him:

Joel Rosenberg, Not Quite Scaramouche (Tor, 2001) Joel Rosenberg is at it again. Not Quite Scaramouche is the sequel to Not Exactly the Three Musketeers and the newest entry in Rosenberg's Guardians of the Flame series. For those who have never read any of the series, it began with a group of seven role-playing college students transported into the world of their game and the bodies of their characters. They have since transformed the fantasy world in which they found themselves, introducing such innovations as telegraphy, steel production and gunpowder. It is now approximately twenty years later. The original leader of the group, Karl Cullinane, who became an emperor, has died heroically. His son, Jason, has renounced his right to the imperial throne and is now merely Baron Cullinane. Kethol, Pirojil and Durine, the heroes of Not Exactly the Three Musketeers, are soldiers in service to the Cullinanes. Not Quite Scaramouche follows the adventures of the two surviving members of that trio. Durine's place in the trio has been taken by the wizard Erenor. As neither Kethol nor Pirojil trust him, his spell books are being held hostage against his good behavior. As the book opens, Our Heroes can be found in the city of Biemestren attending to their retirement by moonlighting as footpads. Apparently, one of the innovations that the Cullinanes neglected to introduce was Social Security.

http://www.greenmanreview.com/three_musketeers_not.html
Joel Rosenberg, Not Exactly the Three Musketeers (Tor, 1999) Pirojil, Durine and Kethol are "Not Exactly the Three Musketeers," the heroes of Joel Rosenberg's latest addition to the Guardians of the Flame series. Pirojil is the intelligent one with a long-hidden past but a face so ugly as to seem misshapen. Durine is the big one, bigger than two of most men, who cannot let himself care about anyone, lest they up and die on him. Kethol is the handsome one, with a taste for games of chance, and a surprising streak of chivalry. All three are sworn to the service of the Cullinanes, which really irritates the dowager empress, Beralyn Furnael. Hoping to discredit them, she sends them off on a mission to fetch to the capital a spoiled young noblewoman, who claims that she is being forced to wed against her will. They know that the mission cannot be as simple as it seems, and of course, it is not, because there wouldn't be a story otherwise. Like Aramis, Porthos and Athos before them, our heroes are joined by a fourth person who quickly becomes part of their fellowship, the mage Erenor. At first a mere annoyance, Erenor quickly becomes a valuable ally. The young noblewoman, Lady Leria, is happy enough to go with them, but her guardian, Lady Ellanee, is less than pleased about the arrangement. She's definitely up to something, but they can't discover what before they must begin their journey back to the capital. To make matters worse, Ellanee's son appears to be spreading rumors about the huge dowry that Lady Leria is carrying, making them the target of bounty hunters and greedy villagers all along their path.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – On Oct. 23, as my book tour for "The Last Days" was just getting under way, I got a call inviting me to attend a private viewing of Mel Gibson's forthcoming film, "The Passion of Christ." An intimate group of about 35 or 40 prominent Washingtonians would gather at a hotel in downtown D.C. We'd have the opportunity to meet with members of Gibson's team, view an unfinished rough cut of the film, and discuss it amongst ourselves. The viewing would be off the record. We would need to sign a non-disclosure form. But given that I was now a best-selling author and an evangelical Christian from an Orthodox Jewish background, they were interested in my take. It was an unexpected honor, and I gratefully accepted. We all met Friday night at 8 p.m., and I didn't get home until two o'clock in the morning. The film wasn't six hours, but our discussions lasted well into the wee hours of the morning. There is much that I cannot say about the film – yet. Not until closer to the Feb. 25, 2004, release. But I have been given permission by a top aide to Gibson to write this and talk about the film in various interviews and speeches I have over the next few months.
