Firekeeper

New and Selected Poems

Pattiann Rogers
The poems in Firekeeper, Pattiann Rogers' sixth book of poetry, are alive, flowing, and full of energy and purpose. They refuse to be contained or defined. Robert Michael Pyle writes, "I love these sparkling, burrowing poems. They know no border between eroticism and death, sheer whimsy and utter gravity, the translucent spirit and the naked body, the sky and the everloving soil."
Eating Bread and Honey

Pattiann Rogers
In this collection, Pattiann Rogers takes readers on a sensual journey through the natural world, delineating our place in it with poems that touch our senses and leave readers quietly satisfied. MORE This Nature Pattiann Rogers "This nature is not a single entity, not a consistent force that sanctions or condemns behavior, not a god-substitute that we can embrace or blame or escape."

Also, physicist Clint Sprott brings a condensed version of his stage show "The Wonders of Physics" into the studio to amaze Jim Fleming, and wreak havoc with his radio voice. SEGMENT 2: Poet Kurt Brown edited an anthology, "Verse and Universe" of poems that deal with science. Judith Strasser talks with him about bridging the gap between science and literature. Also, poet Pattiann Rogers reads "The Rites of Passage," one of her poems included in the anthology. Steve Paulson talks with Rogers about her delight in using scientific language. Pattiann Rogers' most recent collection of poetry is "Eating Bread and Honey."

Using These Notes from Computers in the College of Natural Resources Computer Laboratory
At this point, you may be wondering what the multi-media format consists of Also, please note that I occasionally videotape classroom sessions as an aid to students who may wish to review certain lectures or who may anticipate in advance their absence from a particular lecture. These tapes will be made available for student use only upon request. I rely extensively upon examples as a tool for conveying technical material, so perhaps it is appropriate to insert here a few examples of the new media features that have been incorporated into the courseware. You will have noticed in the preceding sentence that the final word was italicized. In the class notes, this can mean one of three special things:
    • 1) the special type has been used to convey some meaning that conforms to traditional publishing standards, 2) the word has a special definition for purposes of the subject matter in this course, or, 3) the word is part of the Linnaean system of binomial nomenclature used to designate the genus and species of some organism that is interesting to us in the context in which the word appears in the notes.
Among these possible reasons for the italics, the last is generally the easiest to identify. If the word is both capitalized and italicized, itis likely to represent the genus of some organism, e.g.

SEDUCTION To seduce - to lure; to lead away. In "The Hummingbird: A Seduction" from , it is a man and woman. But, Pattiann Rogers uses her wonderful ability to take trained observations of nature and animals and relate them to us. This poem is one of the most sensual I have heard in a long time. It is seduction in the classic sense. Yet, not all of us are seduced by the same lures. Some are seduced by money, fame, power - even their own writing. Write a poem of seduction. Seduced By Sunlight A road of sunlight from the window
lies upon the desktop. My hand moves to cross it.
I am surprised by its heat. The road leads out
to your house sunset west. Seduced by sunlight,
my winter body rises. Should I tell you I am coming?
Will you walk the road with me? Charles Michaels alone i sat
    not asking for any company
    content in my unhappy thoughts
    but your eyes pierced
    the normally unpenetrated exterior
and you saw beyond recognizing your desire as i did mine and your lips, your perfect lips made promises promises my lips excepted fingers sliding electrically my confusion and lust heaved for one unknown could never know but your hands held mine pleading, nearly audibly

THE OTIS LECTURE by Pattiann Rogers will be Wednesday, October 22, at 7 p.m. in the Muskie Archives at Bates College. One of America's most acclaimed poetic voices for the natural world will present for one hour "Life in an Expanding Universe." Don't miss it!
On THURSDAY, October 23, at 4 p.m. in Chase Lounge, there will be a rare opportunity to listen to a conversation about "ways of looking at nature," shared by four Faculty members and Pattiann Rogers. Professor Jane Costlow in Russian, Professor Rob Farnsworth in English, Professor Ned Harwood in Art History, and Professor Sharon Kinsman, in Biology will participate.
REMEMBER: The Otis Event is an annual highlight for sharing our concern about celebrating and protecting the natural environment. In doing so, we also honor a former student - Phil Otis - who gave his life attempting to rescue stranded hikers during his summer internship in the Mount Rainier National Park, and who had deep convictions about Bates students joining to care for the environment.
