Award-winning poet Pattiann Rogers Award-winning poet Pattiann Rogers presents a talk titled "Life in an Expanding Universe" for the 2003 Philip J. Otis lecture at Bates College at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 22, in the Muskie Archives, Campus Avenue. Sponsored by the Otis Endowment at Bates, the lecture is open to the public at no charge. For more information, please call 207-786-8204. Linked to Annie Dillard, D.H. Lawrence and Walt Whitman, Rogers is known for verse that both embraces the natural world and unfolds the complexities of science. "I've never seen nature observed as closely, nor transfigured by human language, as in Pattiann Rogers' poetry," said Roald Hoffmann, Nobel laureate in chemistry. Too, Rogers explores the essence of divinity, love and intimacy. Her "musical, lushly rhythmic lines show well the deep connection between the erotic and the holy that Rogers explores," wrote reviewer Susan Carlisle in the Harvard Review. Her works include "Song of the World Becoming: Poems New and Collected, 1981-2001" (Milkweed Editions, 2001) and "The Dream of the Marsh Wren: Writing as Reciprocal Creation" (Milkweed, 1999). Publishers Weekly selected her sixth book, "Firekeeper: New and Selected Poems" (Milkweed) as one of the Best Books Published in 1994.

Poetry PattiAnn Rogers Fossil Texts on Canyon Walls 1. Astrophysical Dynamics
There are fables and legends written
right on my bones, on the red grain
of my bones, visible plots, subplots,
captures and escapes, as decipherable
as black ink fictions scribed
on rolled parchments.
And finely needled tattooes-inked
permanently in trumpet creepers,
jungle canopies, moon-webs of winter, bellflowers of blood-compose the inner bowl of my skull. Ancient missas and pre-earth percussions are recorded inside every knuckle, engraved on the turns and curls of my ankles and wrists. By the spine, I am epic, its staff and sway. I am an oratorio of skeleton, an ave of stance. I bear by body the chamber concert of birth, the well-worn recital of death. It's possible then for me to sink also, a myth of sun buried, and to rise again on earth, a parable spoken in stone on a canyon wall. I could truly relent now as if I believed bone were rock and rock light and all boldering stars were fossils of canyon histories, as if I knew stellar

I felt that somehow poetry was going to have to deal with the process of science and what science is saying." Today, Rogers continues to publish poetry and essays. An Conversation with Pattiann Rogers In 1997 the Olympia Poetry Network hosted a reading by Pattiann Rogers at the Washington Center in Olympia, Washington. This interview was conducted while driving from Portland, Oregon, to that reading on October 22, 1997. We began talking about the mechanics of interviews and transcription. Pattiann noted her reaction to the literal transcript of an earlier interview: Part 1. Uncertainty and responding to change. Pattiann : I found I’d used the phrase "I think" so much I wondered "what in the world is the matter with me?" Every other sentence I’m saying, "I think this", "I think that". Then I started listening to people on television, to politicians, even authors, everybody. We are prefacing practically every statement of opinion with the phrase "I think." People are really shy about coming out and making a statement. Bill : I wonder if there is just more uncertainty out there. Pattiann : That’s part of it. We live in a world where new data come in and new technology makes certain things visible - things we didn’t know about before. Bill : Years ago at WSU in Pullman - I picked up a hitchhiker. He was an ex-student. I asked him why he had left school and he said, "It just drove me nuts the way the profs were always changing what they taught - what was true."
