Roethke's The Far Field
In my biased opinion Roethke’s The Far Field rivals Walt Whitman’s original Song of Myself as one of the greatest books of American poetry ever published, and the sequence entitled “North American Sequence” is as inspiring as any of Whitman’s poetry. If you love modern poetry, this is still a must-read book. I love so many poems in this book it’s nearly impossible for me to choose a favorite poem. Needless to say, “In a Dark Time,” a poem I’ve previously analyzed, would probably rank as my favorite. But poems like “The Meadow Mouse,” “The Far Field,” “The Rose,” and, particularly, “The Abyss” seem equally great. However, when I was depressed after my divorce and returned to this book for a source of inspiration, I discovered: THE RIGHT THING
Let others probe the mystery if they can.
Time-harried prisoners of Shall and Will-
The right thing happens to the happy man.
The bird flies out, the bird flies back again;
The hill becomes the valley, and is still;
Let others delve that mystery if they can.

Who would ever dare to recycle the 1975 Doubleday/Anchor edition of The Collected Poems of Theodore Roethke ? Surely only someone who'd long since replaced that $3.95 paperback with a newer edition, the likes of which I have not even seen or bothered to look into, suspecting that the poems have not been revised posthumously. I don't mind the dated cover graphic of the little yellow sun-blob above a row of four blobby trees, one taller yellow and one taller blue tree (crowns vaguely linden-like) flanked by smaller green blob trees, perhaps coniferous cedars. I've hung onto my 20-something paperback Roethke, repairing its broken back several years ago with chiropractic Scotch tape, continuing to leaf through it now and again to read an old favorite, sometimes to my nature-loving wife, who teaches high-school English, but usually to myself. The book has served me well since I bought it in 1976, at the Grolier Book Shop in Cambridge I believe, the year I moved to the Boston area from the Appalachian Ohio state-college town where I had gone to school. It serves me well still. But somebody around the corner from me on Henry Street in Cambridgeport-let's say a woman around my middle age who does publicity for a nonprofit international development agency-threw her copy out. Let's assume, perhaps wrongly, that she didn't replace her copy either, finding Roethke a bit too apolitical, and that she hadn't read this one in so long-not since the course she took at Brandeis on modern poetry-that she just figured she may as well get rid of it.

Major Themes, Historical Perspectives, and Personal Issues
Personal Background : Roethke had extremely ambivalent feelings about his father, who was managing partner in a large greenhouse operation in Saginaw, Michigan. He also had problems related to alcohol addiction and bipolar disorder, which resulted in periods of hospitalization. All of these personal tensions are confronted in his poetry.
Significant Form, Style, or Artistic Conventions
"Frau Bauman, Frau Schmidt, and Frau Schwartze" The three "ancient ladies" preside over processes of growth (both vegetable and the poet's own) almost as personifications of natural forces, or even the three Fates. Their presence, like Mother Nature's, is somewhat ambiguous; there is a note of threat in their tickling of the child and in their night presence. The three women's vigor and authority should be noted, as well as their avoidance of limitation by sex-role stereotypes: clearly female (they wear skirts, they have a special association with the child), they also climb ladders and stand astride the steam-pipes providing heat in the greenhouse. "Root Cellar"

Theodore Roethke (1908-1963). Born in Saginaw, Michigan, Roethke was the son of a greenhouse owner; greenhouses figure prominently in the imagery of his poems. He graduated magna cum laude from the University of Michigan in 1929, where he also earned an M.A. in 1936 after graduate study at Harvard. He taught at several universities, coached two varsity tennis teams, and settled at the University of Washington in 1947. Intensely introspective and demanding of himself, Roethke was renowned as a great teacher, though sometimes incapacitated by an ongoing manic-depressive condition. His collection

Theodore Roethke's "The Moment": Mysticism Through the Senses Karen Alkalay-Gut Poesis V. 7, No. 3, 1986, 38-46. THE MOMENT by Theodore Roethke We passed the ice of pain And came to a dark ravine, And there we sang with the sea: The wide, the bleak abyss Shifted with our slow kiss. Space struggled with time; The gong of midnight struck The naked absolute. Sound, silence sang as one. All flowed: without, within; Body met body, we Created what's to be. What else to say? We end in joy. Theodore Roethke's "The Moment": Mysticism Through the Senses You will have no trouble if you approach these poems as a child would, naively, with your whole being awake, your faculties loose and alert. (2) This and other hints thrown out in his journals, lectures, and essays, attest to the fact that Roethke sees a clear need to break away from the intellectual and rational approaches in order to reach a more empathic understanding and communication. His approach is perpetuated by explicators of Roethke as well. Richard Blessing summarizes the prevailing prejudice against a "close reading" of Roethke in his discussion of Praise to the End!

The Collected Poems of Theodore Roethke > Customer Review #1: To guide and inform a life

I have always been transfixed by this mans poetry. Roethke possessed a way of speaking in his poetry that was both confessional and deeply spiritual. He was beyond doubt one of the greatest American poets of the 20th Century. Some of his poems, like Journey to the Interior, The Far Field, The Lost Son, and so many others create an almost religious experience in the reader. Roethke suffered from bipolar disorder throughout most of his life, and this experience (extreme emotional ups and downs) colored his vision of the world around him. But there is no trace of self-pity, and no great emphasis on depression or death. Instead, love, time, age, and the mystery of life are the themes of his poetry. He saw life as a religious experience, and was essentially a pantheist at heart. This is a book to give as a gift to some Seeker, if you are lucky enough to know someone who fits into that category. Its a book to guide, inform, and heal a life.

The Waking by Theodore Roethke
I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow.
I feel my fate in what I cannot fear.
I learn by going where I have to go. We think by feeling. What is there to know?
I hear my being dance from ear to ear.
I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow. Of those so close beside me, which are you?
God bless the Ground! I shall walk softly there,
And learn by going where I have to go. Light takes the Tree; but who can tell us how?
The lowly worm climbs up a winding stair;
I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow. Great Nature has another thing to do
To you and me, so take the lively air,
And, lovely, learn by going where to go. This shaking keeps me steady. I should know. What falls away is always. And is near. I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow. I learn by going where I have to go. On this day in 1935, the poet Theodore Roethke was hospitalized for a manic-depressive breakdown, the first of many he would endure. Theodore Roethke
Theodore Roethke was born in Saginaw, Michigan, and spent his childhood in and around his father’s large commercial greenhouses, with their luxuriance of protected natural growth. It was there, among the acres of roses and carnations, and in cellars rank with rotten manure and rooting slips, that he developed his participatory awareness of the small things of nature. These two, the greenhouses and the almost godlike father directing a crew of skilled florists and helpers, would become the most pervasive shaping presences in his poetry—the greenhouses a humanly created Eden surrounded by open fields of eternity, and the father a center of powerful conflicting emotions of love and hate.
Roethke apparently began to write poems during his undergraduate years at the University of Michigan, where he received a B.A. in 1929, but if so, he wrote in secret. His doing so is only one early instance of his habitual wearing of masks to hide an inner vulnerability and seriousness. It was not until his graduate school years, first at Michigan and then at Harvard, that he either discussed or wrote poetry openly. His first publications came in 1930 and 1931. His teaching career, which would prove to be lifelong, began in the fall of 1931 at Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania. Toward the end of his four-year term there, he served also as tennis coach, a game he played with intense and even rude aggressiveness. Later he would teach at several other colleges and universities before settling, from 1947 until his death, at the University of Washington.

Theodore Huebner Roethke was born in Saginaw, Michigan, the son of Otto Roethke and Helen Huebner, who, along with an uncle owned a local greenhouse. As a child, he spent much time in the greenhouse observing nature. Roethke grew up in Saginaw, attending Aurthur Hill High School, where he gave a speech on the Junior Red Cross that was published in twenty six different languages. In 1923 his father died of cancer, an event that would forever shape his creative and artistic outlooks. From 1925 to 1929 Roethke attended the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, graduating magna cum laude. Despite his family’s wish that he pursue a legal career, he quit law school after one semester. From there he spent 1929 to 1931, taking graduate courses at the University of Michigan and later the Harvard Graduate School. There he met and worked with fellow poet Robert Hillyer.

80. Poet Theodore Roethke
1947 Poet theodore roethke. Table of Contents Previous Next He invented a vocabulary of metamorphosis. Thus theodore roethke. . Life magazine, 1972 footnote 1.
http://www.washington.edu/research/showcase/1947b.html
Poet Theodore Roethke
"He invented a vocabulary of metamorphosis. He uprooted his environment for unfolding images, replayed light, objects, emotions back to us in juxtapositions never seen or heard before. Inside that darkly blooming world where he debated with God, death and all things green, lovely visions struck him... We have appointed our kids and our artists keepers of our flattened, post-industrialized consciences. Our poets are lasers of sensibility, feeling, seeing, perceiving with an intensity we don't dare. And they become in this transaction the victim of their own awareness and our staggering unawareness. Thus Theodore Roethke." Life magazine, 1972 Theodore H. Roethke, who served on the UW faculty from 1947 until his death in 1963, has earned a place in history as perhaps the greatest American poet of his generation. His poetry has been recognized as a national treasure. Among his many honors, Roethke won the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1954 and the National Book Award in 1959. Roethke's best known works are poems that incorporate memories from his childhood of his father's greenhouse. These are considered by many to be his greatest achievement.
