Emigration From Cork Ireland to Upper Canada, 1823 The First Peter Robinson Settlers
by
Roberta M. O'Brien
Updated July 11, 2001 Disturbances in North Cork, 1822 In 1822, the northern part of County Cork was on the verge of an agrarian revolt. The secret Whiteboy society was revived and began to terrorize landowners, magistrates and tithe collectors. This outbreak of violence had several causes. The post-Napoleonic-war depression and several years of a poor potato crop had resulted in much poverty and evictions of tenant farmers. The "last straw" was the introduction of the Composition Act, 1823 which required the payment of tithes in cash rather than in kind. The tithes were a form of tax which supported the Church of Ireland (Anglican) clergy and were collected from everyone including poor, mostly Catholic, tenant farmers. The local officials reacted to the situation in a typically harsh fashion and many young men were arrested and transported to Australia, in some cases, for the simple crime of being out at night after the curfew. The British government thought that sending surplus evicted farmers and other people in poor circumstances to the colonies might ease the situation and prevent an all-out rebellion. Emigration to Upper Canada The government decided to give poor people from north Cork free land grants in Upper Canada (now Ontario) to encourage them to leave Ireland and lead a settled and peaceful farm life in the Canadian backwoods. This emigration scheme had the added benefit of filling up the "empty" land in the colony of Upper Canada. Settlers from Britain (including Ireland) were especially welcomed to boost the population and form the backbone of a loyal militia which could defend the land against the Americans in case they should invade Canada again.

  • 30. The Physical Geography Of The Balnagask Headland
A study of the mainly glacial features on the Balnagask Headland in Aberdeen Scotland by peter robinson
    http://www.users.totalise.co.uk/~jhn/balnagask/
The Balnagask Headland is situated just to the south of Aberdeen Bay in Scotland. This is a guide to the physical Geography of the region; a landscape which owes much to the influence of glacial processes. The guide takes the form of a walk which starts at the site of the new aquarium in Torry and ends at the Bay of Nigg covering a distance of just over 1.5 miles. This is a stunning little headland; an absolute must see for anyone who enjoys physical Geography. The sites are numbered on the following map which is now clickable! Let me know what you think of my observations, please email pete at jhn@totalise.co.uk Please also acknowledge this website if you study any of these localities further. Many thanks. Pete May 20th 2004
    1. Sea levels started to rise across Scotland after the end of the last ice age around 13000 years ago. Levels reached a peak height between 8000 and 6000 years ago, and along the northeast coast of Scotland, there is a raised beach and raised cliffs several metres above present sea level which demarcates the maximum extent of this marine transgression. At site one , there is a good example of raised cliffs, and similar raised features stretch right along the extent of our walk.

    33. The Cockermouth, Keswick & Penrith Railway
Comprehensive history and photographs of the line. From peter robinson, Cumbrian Railways Association.
    http://www.pwr.clara.net/cra/ckp/ckp1.htm
An Introduction HISTORY PHOTOGRAPHS STATIONS LINK TO CKP RAILWAYS SITE
The Cockermouth, Keswick and Penrith Railway (always known as the "CK&P") was just one of the many small railways of Cumbria until it disappeared as a separate legal entity in the great merger which created the London, Midland & Scottish Railway Company in 1923. From the the 1920s this was to be the mainstay of traffic on the line, and by the 1960s, with the competition of the private car, this was not enough to sustain the line against the great railway economy drive led by Dr. Richard Beeching, the then Chairman of the British Railways Board. The western end of the line, together with the link from Cockermouth to Workington (at one time the Cockermouth and Workington Railway) closed from 18th April 1966. Strict economies were then brought into force on the remaining section of the route, but these were not enough to prevent its closure, in turn, from 6th March 1972. After nearly 30 years of increasing decay and assault on the route from other development a real attempt is now being made to reopen the eastern section between Keswick and Penrith. More details of this exciting project can be found at the promoters website.
