The Martians is a collection of stories, alternate histories, poems, and even the complete text of a planetary constitution based on Kim Stanley Robinson's award-winning Mars trilogy (composed of Red Mars, Green Mars, and Blue Mars). For those unfamiliar with the series, The Martians from the title are the humans who have colonized and terraformed the Red Planet over the course of several generations. While Robinson told their story at considerable length in his novels, The Martians fleshes out some of his more interesting characters and also adds depth to their world.

  • "The Years of Rice and Salt" by Kim Stanley Robinson A novelist imagines 700 years of history in which the plague has wiped out the West and China and Islam rule the globe. By Laura Miller "The one duty we owe to history is to rewrite it," Oscar Wilde said, and few have taken that imperative so much to heart as Kim Stanley Robinson does with his latest novel, "The Years of Rice and Salt." In this epic tale, he asks what the world would be like if Europe's people and culture had perished in the plagues of the mid-1300s. The book, which covers 700 years, from what we'd call the Middle Ages to 2091, describes a planet different in many ways from our own but in its essentials surprisingly similar. China and Dar-al-Islam (the conglomeration of Muslim nations) have become the predominant global powers, with a progressive Indian League and a confederation of the Hodenosaunee (Native Americans) filling out the map. For the most part, what a novelist tries to do with any given book is far less important that what he or she actually manages to accomplish, but it's impossible to read "The Years of Rice and Salt" without stopping now and then to contemplate the vastness of the task Robinson has set himself. Think of the challenges in writing a novel that ranges over seven centuries and most of the globe then imagine having to concoct all of the history for it as well, each year building on the events of the year before and taking Robinson's conjectural world further from the one we know. Creating a credible depiction of 10th century Beijing may seem relatively easy, but as time rolls on how will exploration unfold, civilizations bloom, technology and ideas evolve in a world where Christianity is a mere footnote and the great campaigns of Western colonialism have never taken place?

Review of Kim Stanley Robinson's Mars Trilogy
Kim Stanley Robinson's impressive epic tale about the colonization and terraforming of Mars streches over 3 books, 3 centuries and a host of beliveable, and detailed characters. The novels can best be described as Science Faction rather than Science Fiction, since the author has labored to keep things as scientifically "correct" as possible. Only the timescales of the terraforming process, which takes place in the course of "only" 2-3 centuries is somewhat unbelieveable, but otherwise a very realistic setting. Though powerful selfaware AIs are nonexistent in the Mars Triology and the setting is the nearfuture, the novels can still be described as being quite relevant for OA simply because of the use of correct science, and the visions about possible new ways of organizing societies, and economies under the influence of accelerating technology. Red Mars : Green Mars : The majority of the remaining first-hundred are hidding together with other colonist and radicals opposed to the "New Order" ruling both Earth and Mars. Meanwhile the megacorporations, now fully back in control on Mars again, continues and expands their terraforming efforts. As the atmosphere is slowly changed, and geneered species of microorganism and plants are released, Red Mars turns to Green Mars. The remaining and now elderly first-hundred knows that compromise and coorporation between the different radicals, and rebels hidding in safeholds in the Martian wilderness, is necessary, but how to accomplish that ?

The Years of Rice and Salt
    by Kim Stanley Robinson
    (HarperCollins Voyager, £16.99, 724 pages, hardback; published 4 March 2002. HarperCollins, £7.99, 772 pages, paperback, published 3 February 2003.)
Kim Stanley Robinson's The Years of Rice and Salt is a strange book. On the surface it's a novel about an alternate history in which the Plague wiped out Europe's population in the fourteenth century, nearly extinguishing both Christianity and caucasians. The world that unfolds in Robinson's centuries-spanning epic is dominated by the clashing empires of China and Islam. At first, the book seems to be a mosaic of chronologically arranged stories set in various locations, each tale changing voice to reflect the place and era it depicts. But then it gradually becomes clear partly through the device of having the characters of each episode meet in "the bardo," where souls wait between reincarnations that the book is one long narrative that follows a group of souls whose lives are fated to come together time and again. But then, other textual evidence for example, odd, unexplained footnotes points towards the book being a literary work from Robinson's imagined world, a historical novel combining historical "found" documents with an anonymous (or at least undisclosed) writer's own prose.

www.KimStanleyRobinson.net contributor Max recently saw KSR at the Borders Bookshop in London and this is what he had to say...
I managed to ask his editor what he was writing next. She said he was working on a big novel, (possibly a trilogy ! ) set in Washington in the present and the near future. It is going to be political. Thinking of Antartica, there are certainly some interesting parts focussed on the senator's aide character. I'm already looking forward to it. Someone showed him a review of his new book in that days Standard which was very positive. He said it was the kind of review you always hope to see and could not be better. There was also an excellent one in the Independent. He seems to be getting out of the Sci-Fi ghetto which the media buries so many brilliant books in.
