Penguin Putnam, Roc. 292p. c2002. 0-451-45878-8. $15.00. SA Members of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America choose the best of their genre literature. This collection, then, represents peer-nominated winners, which include an appreciation of grand master Philip Jose Farmer as well as six stories, or selections thereof. In addition, nine leading authors in the field comment on the future of SF/fantasy literature. A list of past Nebula Awards provides background in the genre. The current winners generally have a dark humor or philosophical "bent." "Daddy's World" plays on perspective, and is reminiscent of the recent film AI. The chapter from Darwin's Radio plays with the frightening consequences of societal and political interventions into reproduction. "Macs" suggests a thought-provoking way to deal with killings: artificially create people who serve as human sacrifices to atone for a killer's misdeeds. "Stellar Harvest" brings adventure filmmaking to a whole other dimension. "Goddesses" deals with a consultant who works in a third-world place to improve economic conditions, only to find how difficult it is to change the human condition itself. "A Night of Ghosts and Shadows" is a self-reflective treatment of prophetic writers.

Bud Foote
A Conversation with Kim Stanley Robinson
During last June’s SFRA Convention in Reno, Stan and I sat down for an hour for a wide-ranging conversation about his work and his ideas. It was June 19, 1993, the day after he and I had appeared in the same session, he to present his ideas on postmodernism in the genre, and I to discuss his novel Red Mars in the context of his other work. ( Red Mars is, of course, the first of a trilogy; Green Mars should appear early in 1994, Blue Mars in 1996.) I transcribed the whole conversation and edited it down to manageable form; Stan made a few emendments before I produced this final version. Nothing substantial has been added, but peripheral matters we judged interesting only to the two of us have been largely eliminated, or at least I hope so. Bud Foote: Stan, I note that Red Mars is set in the same future history as the novella "Green Mars" and the novel Icehenge Kim Stanley Robinson: Very roughly. In the earlier works I didn’t have the complete conception of what I wanted to do in mind, and I don’t think of myself as building a future history. Each of those works attempts to be a complete thing. It is true that in

His fiction frequently delves into ecological and utopian themes with a political sophistication and point of view rarely seen elsewhere in the field.

A View from the Bridge
by Terry Bisson Romance of the Century ... Tell us. ACTIVITIES The Future of Adventure A GORP Visionary Adventure by Kim Stanley Robinson They are led through a beautiful landscape, hot air ballooning or taking some other form of transport out of the entire Jules Verne repertoire They will be marginally-to- comfortably middle class, still in their twenties or thirties, with some disposable income, urban/ suburban Americans but with a love of snowboarding or parasailing, and local athletic club workouts. While waiting in an airport for a flight to a meeting, they will see a book about Everest; they will buy it and read it and think, How interesting . Ads in The New Yorker will remind them that they too could join an adventure tour, and make their next vacation a trip to some place as exotic and wild as Everest. Adventure travel: just a matter of some vacation time, some disposable income, and a phone call!

Robinson completes Mars trilogy, turns to Antarctica
Jan. 21, 1996
Elisabeth Sherwin gizmo@ dcn.davis.ca.us Exactly what would it take to make Mars habitable for men and women from Earth? How would the atmosphere have to be manipulated to allow for human existence, how could the freezing, rocky soil be made to tolerate plant growth and how could the social and political problems that plague Earth be avoided in a new society? Science fiction writer Kim Stanley Robinson , 43, has thought long and hard about the problems of creating and sustaining a new society on Mars. He spent six years working on a 1,600-page trilogy devoted to the future history of Mars. First came "Red Mars," then "Green Mars." "Blue Mars" will be out in June. Robinson, his wife, Lisa Howell, and their two young sons live in Village Homes in West Davis. He has supported himself as a writer for the past decade and in the process established a reputation for not only being a good writer but making sure good, believable science was part of his science fiction. His first book, "The Wild Shore," published in 1984, became the first in a trilogy about Orange County, post-nuclear holocaust. Robinson grew up in Orange County. He earned a bachelor's degree at UC San Diego and a master's at Boston University. He returned to San Diego for a Ph.D. in English and American literature, which he finished in 1982. Robinson and his wife lived in Zurich for two years while Lisa completed a post-doc in environmental toxicology.

Kim Stanley Robinson's Mars Trilogy
February 2000 I just finished reading these books (Red Mars, Green Mars, and Blue Mars) and can't recommend them too highly. Red Mars won the Nebula award in 1993, and Green Mars and Blue Mars each won the Hugo award (in 1994 and 1997), and all were richly deserved. I can't say I enjoyed these more than any other SF book I've read recently (Neal Stephenson's Cryptonomicon wins that award), but I found them perhaps among the most rewarding of all the science fiction books I've ever read. What is most remarkable about the books is the multiplex layeringideas, story lines, facts, visions of the future. A story of the terraforming of Mars, this book is also a love story for the geology and geography of a planet and the slow succession of ecological progression, a rich exploration of how people are changed by their environment as they in turn change it ("We are areoformed as we terraform Mars."), a wonderful, speculative exploration of the science and technology that might be applied not only to such a massive engineering project as the transformation of a planet, but also the kinds of recreational technologies such a culture might develop, and a thoughtful investigation of politics and cultural evolution as a group of very smart people are faced with the possibility of starting fresh.

[in
