Robinson, Edwin Arlington Miniver Cheevy
Genre Poem Keywords Alcoholism Drug Addiction Mental Illness Summary Miniver Cheevy was a "child of scorn" who regretted his life in the real world. He loved to dream of the past, especially the glorious and romantic past. He loved abstractions, like Art and Romance, but "cursed the commonplace" of everyday life. He "scorned the gold he sought, / But sore annoyed was he without it . . . . " He couldn't DO anything in the world, so he "called it fate, / And kept on drinking." Commentary Like "Richard Cory," this is another of Robinson's poems that sketch a quick, memorable portrait of a person bent on self-destruction.

Tumultuously void of a clean scheme
Whereon to build, whereof to formulate,
The legion life that riots in mankind
Goes ever plunging upward, up and down,
Most like some crazy regiment at arms,
Undisciplined of aught but Ignorance, And ever led resourcelessly along To brainless carnage by drunk trumpeters. (Octaves, 9-16)

Edwin Arlington Robinson was born on Dec. 22, 1869, at Head Tide in Maine and until 1897 lived at the family home in Gardiner, Maine, aside from several years as a student at Harvard University. For the rest of his life he moved in New York and devoted his life to writing poetry. Robinson earned a small living first as a subway inspector and then in the city's customs office. He resided in rooms at boarding houses in New York and Yonkers, at the Hotel Judson on Washington Square, in Brooklyn at 810 Washington Ave., and at last on West 42nd Street. His

Length : Text-only version Prev Index Next Your comments on this poem to attach to the end [ microfaq Sending this on Martin's behalf: Thomas Hood The man who cloaked his bitterness within This winding-sheet of puns and pleasantries, God never gave to look with common eyes Upon a world of anguish and of sin: His brother was the branded man of Lynn; And there are woven with his jollities The nameless and eternal tragedies That render hope and hopelessness akin. We laugh, and crown him; but anon we feel A still chord sorrow-swept, a weird unrest; And thin dim shadows home to midnight steal, As if the very ghost of mirth were dead As if the joys of time to dreams had fled, Or sailed away with Ines to the West. Edwin Arlington Robinson http://www.photoaspects.com/chesil/hood/ Robinson's poem does indeed address both aspects, but, more than that, it highlights the predominance of Hood's serious work, and the fact that it wound through, and ultimately came to overshadow his "puns and pleasantries". This is, in the end, as much an epitaph of Hood as it is an assessment. -martin Links: References to Hood's poems: 'branded man of Lynn': "Eugene Aram", Poem #720 'sailed away with Ines': "Fair Ines"

    Edwin Arlington Robinson
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Edwin Arlington Robinson December 22 April 6 ) was an American poet , who won three Pulitzer Prizes , for his work. Born and raised in Maine to a wealthy family, he was the youngest of three sons and not groomed to take over the family business. Instead, he pursued poetry since childhood, joining the local poetry society as its youngest member. He attended Harvard , but his personal life was soon beset by a chain of tragedies that are reflected in his work. His father died, the family went bankrupt, one of his brothers became a morphine addict , and his mother contracted and eventually died from black diphtheria . Because of the highly infectious nature of the disease, the local mortician was unwilling to even tend to the body, forcing Robinson and his brothers to bury her themselves. Shortly after, he met a woman, Emma Shepherd, with whom he fell deeply in love, but he was also convinced that marriage and familial responsibilities would hinder his work as a poet, so he introduced her to his eldest brother, who married her. Though this brother agreed to support Robinson (and did provide a modest monthly stipend for as long as he could with his bankrupt business), the relationship between the poet and his brother's wife was a source of tension between them. Later, his middle brother died, apparently a suicide For several years, Robinson lived in poverty, continuing to write and publish with the help of his friends. His first break came in
