David Rivard
Bienvenido, miedo

what would have been this poem's endif this morning I hadn't eaten a roll with jam I might have said, finally, the night did what night always does, it swallowed my two friends, their arms slung around each other's waists, after I drove off chasing my highbeams. and surrounded by pinewoods when one of them the mansurprised by the baby-seat suddenly visible in the back of the car (lit up by an interior light as I opened the door)he said, my friend they won't be able to go anywhere. Seeing I was as far as 150 miles from home a potential traffic fatality

By David Rivard (posted Wednesday, July 15, 1998) Continue Article To hear the poet read "What I Know," click here I don't know the happiness felt
by that woman who believes she can actually recall being a cold bullet fallen in a field of trampled spring clover without having hit any man lying there dead or groaning. Neither will I ever know the happiness of the one man among us who remembers so clearly his life long ago as that aspiring but naive piece of parchment on which a tribe of mistrustful lords and barons wrote the Magna Carta. But because the steam-heated winter dries Simone's skin I know I get to stand by the still warm tub filled with bath toys toothless killer whale reborn as cruise missile

A REAL RIGHT THING David Rivard
Like a green ludicrous tow truck
atop the hood, my pleasure's obvious
circulating city streets, it's bountiful
the smell of warm December early the sixth
day the men come to the park
to gather leaves half-disintegrated
already compost, that smell
there for the asking those leaves
some few the color of her skin
end of summer, sweet present once blown against by my lipsOh, that was a good moment to be born in choosing to be saved, serendipitous for how the color set off her collarbone like a silver belt buckle in a darkened church and seeing her face, in sleep calm all there is, I'll be in sympathy with a car alarm, if it never goes off will love having this sick man around

David Rivard
My Education On Earth
For a short time it would happen whenever
paging through a book I felt betrayed,
say by an almanac of birds
reminding me of a heaven where judgment might be rendered
exclusively
according to the supremacy of feather
or the elegance of song.
Or when I leaned forward
those rainy summer evenings
to hear how the wind
put into my ear the nearly noiseless slice of fins what some others have called the whistle the slice of fins cutting across a passage of smooth blue water bringing me their hellos. Whenever I leaned like that it happened. Happened whenever I felt most like myself, when words, their failures waving farewell, selected me as the one who would put down the thing many others had also overheard Hagler say in Provincetown in 1984 by an indoor swimming pool in a hotel where from the walls surrounding his training-camp boxing ring we all were eyed the nearly adolescent shyness the ghost-insulting smell, those murals of them embodying an uncomplicated innocence, though they had crossed an ocean, an ocean

Message to the Bride Now since everything is so persuasive
you will go on changing as always
it was always the case with you,
whether walking through a bedroom
lit like a cool tupelo grove
or slouched in a cocktail lounge,
a loud hive of drowning wasps
watching videotape after videotape.
Since no apprentice is hypocritical
you've fallen in love
You'll be the bride-to-be who trembles touching the lace practicing spontaneously lifing the veil while she watches herself in the mirror where the blurry television set also reflects the mewling characters created over lunch at a producer's office six months earlier as time is measured by the watches of staff writers in Century City, California. In a field off a Vermont road you'll listen to the car ticking, the sounds of the cooling engine blending at that moment with cicadas in the blue grasses and drifting off, as theirs do

I am not like Thylias Moss, in so far as I do suffer from reverence's absence (though I do believe she is propelled often into authentic reverence, for I have heard her read her poems). I offer this as excuse and explanation for what I am about to write.
Today I read nearly two pages In a book by a mystic poet And I laughed like someone who'd been weeping and weeping. Because mystic poets say that flowers feel And that stones have souls And rivers have ecstasies in moonlight. But flowers wouldn't be flowers if they felt anything They'd be people; And if stones had souls they'd be living things, not stones; And if rivers had ecstasies in moonlight, They'd be sick people. Only if you don't know what flowers, stones, and rivers are Can you talk about their feelings. To talk about the soul of flowers, stones, and rivers, Is to talk about yourself, about your delusions. Thank God stones are just stones, And rivers nothing but rivers, And flowers just flowers.
