James Whitcomb Riley Hospital For Children
James Whitcomb Riley Hospital For Children is one of the seven largest children's hospitals in the country, and Indiana's tertiary care referral hospital for children. Riley Hospital has 261 beds and includes 30 specialized ambulatory care clinics. It provides a wide range of services, including pediatric cardiology, pediatric oncology, and intensive care. The Pediatric Intensive Care program is dedicated to providing a highly personalized, private atmosphere for children with rare and debilitating diseases. Riley Hospital has a 47-bed, Level III Newborn Intensive Care Unit; and the only pediatric Hemodialysis Center in the state. The eight-bed Burn Unit is a self-contained surgery suite, staffed and equipped to treat severely burned children. Innovative educational programs and expanded outpatient facilities are designed to help parents care for their children at home whenever possible, reducing the stress on both parents and patient. The Herman B Wells Center for Research in Pediatric Diseases places Riley Hospital in the vanguard of hospitals with quality pediatric programs in clinical care, education and research. Due to the complex and acute nature of the patients' illnesses, Riley Hospital has advanced radiologis equipment for both diagnosis and treatment. The some 71,000 procedures per year include conventional and computed digital radiography, ultrasound, computed tomography, conventional and digital flouroscopy, angiography, interventional radiology and niclear medicine. MRI's are performed at an attached facility.

Book Five in the wonderful Young Patriots Series is James Whitcomb Riley, Young Poet , by Minnie Belle Mitchell and Montrew Dunham. Like the other books in the series, this book is a republication, this time of a book that came out originally in 1942. It is as fresh as ever. We see some wonderful vignettes of young "Bud" Riley as a kid. He runs and jumps and manages to stay just the good side of trouble in frontier Indiana in the years just before the Civil War. Ever the showman, Bud wants to put on circuses, traveling shows, and animal menageries. A typical boy his age, he helps out around the house because it's the right thing to do, not because he necessarily chooses to do so. Bud is also a very smart boy, as he shows from early on when he demonstrates his ability to read in front of the class. And it is this love of reading and of books (and, by extension, of writing) that leads him to his true passion, writing poetry. His fun adventures with his family and with his friends find their way into his poems, which are expertly interspersed throughout the book. A pivotal point in the book is Bud's father's enlistment in the Union army to fight in the Civil War. Mr. Riley doesn't come back right away (In fact, he's gone for several years.), and Bud and the rest of the family have to find a way to deal with the fact that he might never be coming back. Bud also sees the "other side" up close when he discovered that one of his uncles is fighting for the Confederacy!

    Written by Julie Greiner
The once home of the renowned Hoosier poet, James Whitcomb Riley is now a shrine operated by Riley Old Home Association open to visitors from throughout the world. James Whitcomb Riley was born in a log cabin on October 7, 1849 in the little village of Greenfield, in the lap of Indiana's farmland. Riley's father was a frontier lawyer and politician who named his second son after an Indiana governor, James Whitcomb. His mother wrote poetry as well as baked in a hearth oven and raised children. Riley grew up among these simple living, kindly people.
    Victorian Living
Riley's best poems were of such Hoosier characters as "The Raggedy Man" and "Little Orphan Annie". President Woodrow Wilson sent a note of sorrow to Riley's family upon his death which expressed the feeling of the whole country : "With his departure a notable figure passes out of the nation's life; a man who imparted joyful pleasure and a thoughtful view of many things that other men would have missed."
