INDIANA'S POPULAR HISTORY :: james whitcomb riley
EARLY LIFE
One of the most popular poets in American history, James Whitcomb Riley was born in Greenfield, Indiana, the second son and third of six children raised by Reuben A.a Civil War veteran and lawyerand Elizabeth (Marine) Riley. At an early age Riley discovered that he disliked the "iron discipline" of school life but enjoyed books. As a child, Riley often accompanied his father (a noted political orator) on trips to the Hancock County courthouse, where he observed the manners and mores of country society, as well as the countrified dialect he later used in his poetry. Born Dana, Ind., 1900;

James Whitcomb Riley, Young Poet “The gobble-uns ’ll git you ef you don’t watch out!” wrote James Whitcomb Riley in one of his most famous poems, Little Orphant Annie. But before “Bud” Riley grew up to become one of the 19 th century’s most popular and respected poets, he spent a lively boyhood on the edge of the Midwestern wilderness. In Volume 5 in the Young Patriots Series , children will join Bud in his many adventures, which include learning to swim (almost drowning!), and serving as ringmaster in his own circus.
  • The “What Happened Next” section of the book gives children a brief summary of the adult Riley’s accomplishments. Did you know that before he began his writing career, Bud Riley was a sign painter? Kids will enjoy little-known facts about Mr. Riley as they explore the “Fun Facts About…” section.

    Notes on Life and Works
    Born October 7, 1849, James Whitcomb Riley gave up formal education in Greenfield Academy, Indiana, early to do art and make a living however he could, as by sign-painting, one-man stand-up comedy, and medicine shows at home and on the road. He then turned to journalism, first in Greenfield, and afterwards with the Anderson Democrat and the Indianapolis Journal from 1877 to 1885, by 1879 as its resident verse-humorist. During this period he developed his Hoosier dialect and published some of his most loved poems, first in the newspapers, and then in volumes that garnered him many faithful readers:
