Hoosier Connection: James Whitcomb Riley was born in Greenfield , worked in Anderson , and spent most of his life in Indianapolis . His childhood home in Greenfield, now dubbed James Whitcomb Riley's Old Home and Museum , and his adulthood home on Lockerbie St. in Indianapolis, the James Whitcomb Riley Museum Home , are open to the public. Works Discussed: The Bat A Country Pathway The Hoosier Folk-Child The Iron Horse ... Town and Country ,” and " The Wind " Born in 1849 in the village of Greenfield While working for The Anderson Democrat The Indianapolis Journal . By 1883, his first collection of poems, most of them written in the dialect of rural Indiana folk, was published as and While nature appears as a prominent subject in much of Riley’s poetry, he often treats it in generalized terms, celebrating flowers (e.g., "The Rose”), insects (“Two Sonnets to the June-Bug”), amphibians (“The Frog”), birds (“The Jaybird”), seasons (“Knee-Deep in June”), and so forth. He sometimes alludes to nature in classical myth (“A Glimpse of Pan”), and often presents nature as the background of a happy childhood (“The All-Golden”), but in most such poems he does not comment specifically on Indiana’s natural features.

see http://www.rileykids.org/museum/index.asp James Whitcomb Riley’s story began on October 7, 1849 in the sleepy town of Greenfield , Indiana. Born the second son and third out of six children to Reuben and Elizabeth Riley, James inherited gifts from both parents that would later contribute to making him Indiana ’s most beloved poet. Reuben Riley – civil war veteran, lawyer and politician – was in great demand for his extraordinary political speeches. Elizabeth, a poet and storyteller, often entertained her young children with fairy tales and funny stories. These combined talents would later contribute to their son’s successful career as both a poet and orator.
Like his contemporary Mark Twain, some of Mr. Riley’s best-loved writing recalled the rich texture childhood in a growing Indiana town – a time where boys spent their days swimming, fishing, stealing watermelons and playing Indians in the woods.
By the age 16, Riley gave up his struggle with arithmetic and history and quit school. He and some friends started traveling Indiana ’s countryside painting signs, houses and ornamental pictures. The crew dubbed themselves "The Graphic Company."

HAPPY REMEMBRANCES of JAMES WHITCOMB RILEY Yes, Happy Remembrance of YOU James Whitcomb Riley, America's Children's Poet and the poet of the Hoosier people wherever they may be around the world. Riley is, you see, the "Hoosier Poet." "Hoosier" is not just a name for Indiana folk. No, it is the name for people who are humble before God and hardworking despite suffering all that life throws at them. They are sympathetic with the plight of others and tolerant beyond measure of race, creed, gender, orientation or social status. Each Hoosier keeps an eye out for trouble but hopes and prays that none hits him or her. The themes of the poetry of a "Hoosier Poet" reflect this kenotic outlook.
