E-mail us Free to Trade Michael Ridpath REVIEW Rating: 3 (Good) I 'm sure that there are thousands of people out there in unusual or interesting occupations who have toyed with using their job as the backdrop for a mystery novel. Sometimes, as with Scott Turow or Dick Francis, the writer is as good at his job as the lawyer or jockey ever was; in other cases no special talent is revealed, but we get an interesting glimpse into an unfamiliar world nonetheless. Free to Trade is an example of the latter type, set in the fast-paced high-finance world of bond trading in London, where Ridpath paid his dues for eight years. The protagonist is Paul Murray, an ex-Olympic runner now testing himself just as thoroughly in his demanding job. Earnest and hard-working, Murray has time for little but maximizing his customer's returns. Despite Paul's best efforts, there is a romance beginning to blossom between Murray and a co-worker when she dies suddenly, drowned in the Thames. Murray begins to have his suspicions about the death when he sees what the young woman was working on just before the accident. The author is at his best here when closest to bond trading he leads the reader through how deals are done, how the social networks shape the deals, and most of all the staggering amounts of money that get moved around the world, sometimes on the basis of just minutes of judgment by a trader. He also manages to construct a plot that is woven tightly into that financial world, and the possibilities of insider trading and fraud. The further Ridpath gets from finance the more ordinary the book becomes. At first I took the narration to be artfully and intentionally plain soon it became clear, however, that the only style the author knows is to tell what happened and then to tell what the protagonist thought about it. Finally, the mystery is a puzzling one, but it is one where the author sets up several decoys to distract the reader before unmasking the real villain. I certainly did not guess the villain's identity, but I must say that I didn't care that much either.

I was educated at Millfield School in Somerset, and Merton College, Oxford, where I read History. After University, I joined Saudi International Bank, a part-Saudi, part-American owned bank based in London. I started off my career as a credit analyst, but then became a bond trader, managing one of the largest junk bond portfolios in Europe. In 1991 I left bond trading to join Apax Partners, a venture capital firm. My first novel, Free to Trade , was written during evenings and weekends over a four year period. When it was accepted for publication with a large advance, I gave up working in the City to become a full-time writer.
