Some time ago, I suggested to one of our reviewers that an interview with Paul T. Riddell might be nice. I drafted some questions and mentioned that they could be used to define certain areas of interest. Circumstances prevented us from using that reviewer's work. However, we decided to proceed with the interview and to use my original questions for this interview. In the interim, he has left his job at

a definite threat... *aliens certain feelings of alienation printer friendly version by paul t. riddell Well, we're now well into 2000 , and most of the science fictional promises we received as children haven't come to pass. No hover cars, no manned Mars bases, no learning pills. Not that we needed most of these (although learning pills, properly applied, might guarantee that more frat boys leave school with something besides a blasted liver and a police record for date rape), but it's the principle of the thing that's at issue. Most of all, we still haven't made contact with extraterrestrials, and we should be glad of this.

still life with browser employment
by paul t riddell printer friendly version In the last few months, economists have been going nuts with recent studies that show the typical American worker, particularly those in the technical and office sectors, keeps getting more and more productive. After years of decline, suddenly the typical office grunt or programmer is reaching levels of efficiency previously only seen in Japanese car manufacturers, and nobody has an explanation for it. Increased layoffs and consolidation of core businesses don't seem to do much good, and the unemployment rate is still obscene for all of the noise made about how employers need fresh bodies, so it's not the fear of finding a new job in the middle of a depression. Everyone keeps pointing to the computer installed on every desk, without knowing why. We can thank Microsoft for this. By claiming its Web browser is an integral part of the Windows operating system, Bill Gates and crew have managed to develop the first new model of morale motivator and efficiency developer since the invention of the cattle prod and the rectal pear. No matter the company, and no matter the environment, everyone who uses a computer made after 1995 generally has a Web browser on the desktop, and this little beauty is responsible for the increase of office productivity.

The Original Ziesing Edition BLACK BUTTERFLIES:
WHAT THE REVIEWERS SAID Paul T. Riddell, Science Fiction Age

Punk and cyberpunk have quite a bit in common thanks to parallel evolution: their monikers were foisted upon them by outsiders while disavowed by their practitioners; their influences came from a remarkably diverse assemblage of sources; and they both were unnatural groupings which collected completely unrelated talents under one pigeonholed banner. They both also changed the face of their respective artforms without making a direct impact, and they both boast a rabid following that was either too young to have experienced the initial boom or ignored them in favor of more mainstream material until it was trendy to accept them. Cyberpunk fiction originally started as a rebellion against the bloated science fiction of the late Seventies and early Eighties, much as punk intended to destroy the lame dinosaur rock of the same time. Many of its writers started with the stylistic experiments of Brian Aldiss and Philip K. Dick and went into a new direction by postulating a world where instead of humanity traveling boldly toward the stars, we remained locked on our own world due to human greed and conservatism. High technology was a focus of many of these tales, but as a warning that technology wouldnt solve all of mans problems, and in fact could cause quite a few if used solely for profit. While cyberpunk as a movement lasted until about 1992 (some attribute its death to the cyberpunk cover story in Time magazine, while others date it to the first monthly issue of Wired), it produced quite a bit of fascinating reading. Not only did interest in similar fiction bring up works by Dick and his protege K.W. Jeter (

Mark V. Ziesing Books In many ways, the rise and fall of the science fiction subgenre of cyberpunk paralleled that of punk music: a gaggle of disaffected outsiders, tired of the standard crap available from the standard outlets, started producing something closer to their own tastes and ended up changing the world without realizing it. By mirroring the world they saw outside, they surmised a near future where corporations held more power than governments, fashion and popular culture affected more than worldspanning inventions, and the few people not in the thrall of either eked out a precarious but exciting life living in the cracks like cockroaches. Each writer had his or her own view as to how the future was going to be, but all agreed that it was much gloomier than the "Shiny Happy People" stories written by most science fiction writers. These writers borrowed not only from the dystopias of Philip K. Dick, Brian Aldiss, and Harlan Ellison, but from each other and from popular culture. About the same time the punk movement started in the United States, they started gathering momentum. Disparagingly nicknamed "cyberpunks" (remember, the appellation "punk" was intended as an insult,) they gathered a body of work together not seen since the New Wave movement in the late 1960s. The most famous of the group are William Gibson and Bruce Sterling, both of whom indirectly influenced the development of the World Wide Web through such books as

He currently torments the readership of Tangent Sci-Fi Universe , and a plethora of other magazines, and his essays and articles have infected the waterhole of publishing like anthrax. Paul Riddell Revisited: Placing "SFWA Member" on Your Cover Letter
Will It Help Sell Your Story?
(Top SF Editors Reveal Their Views About This Misunderstood Belief)
by James Van Pelt
Why should I care that Paul Riddell said in his Fall Tangent column, "I'm willing to bet that other editors feel the same way I do: with very few exceptions, seeing the letterhead that lists SFWA and HWA is a screaming neon sign saying 'crappy story enclosed; please flush at first opportunity'"? After all, as several editors and writers I talked to pointed out, the statement is clearly hyperbole and shouldn't be taken at face value. Riddell went on to say, "My main beef concerns the SFWA members who put their membership on the letterhead, as in 'Joe Blow, SFWA Member.' When I started accepting manuscripts for the Genetech anthology a year ago, I quickly learned to look at the cover letter; with maybe one exception, every submission that made a big gardyloo about SFWA on its masthead was a complete and utter dog." He says that he plans on addressing in more detail in a future column in Tangent his feelings about SFWA.
