Canadian novelist Mordecai Richler dies
QUEBEC CITY, Quebec (Reuters) Mordecai Richler, one of Canada's most respected and controversial writers, died overnight after a long battle with cancer, his publisher Random House said on Tuesday. Richler, who was 70, was the author of more than 10 books including "Barney's Version" and "The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz." He underwent chemotherapy last week to fight cancer, for the second time in three years. Doctors said the cancer had spread to his remaining kidney. He lost a kidney to cancer in 1998. Richler's publisher Doug Gibson, president of McClelland and Stewart, praised the Quebec-based novelist of Jewish descent. "I think most people would be astonished when they're told that 'Duddy Kravitz' came out in 1959. It's a long time ago and he's been producing major works since then, up to and including 'Barney's Version' in 1997," Gibson told CBC Television. "Mordecai was such a gigantic figure that I think all of us are shaken today."

Richler, Mordecai Richler, Mordecai, , Canadian novelist, b. Montreal. He fled his native city in the early 1950s and lived mainly in London, returning to Canada in 1972 and from then on spending part of his year in London and part in Montreal. Reflecting his youth in that city, Richler's novels are often set within the Canadian Jewish community. Typically, his works skewer provincialism, combining fantastic and wildly comic elements with realistic themes and mingling street-smart sarcasm and ribald wit. The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz (1959, film 1974), his best-known work, chronicles the ascent to wealth of a poor and fiercely ambitious Jewish youth. His other works include The Acrobats Cocksure St. Urbain's Horseman Joshua Then and Now Solomon Gursky Was Here (1989), and

Author Mordecai Richler dies in Canada
MONTREAL, Quebec (AP) Mordecai Richler, one of Canada's best-known authors and social commentators who wrote "The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz" and other novels on Jewish life in Montreal, has died, his publisher said Tuesday. Richler was 70. A spokesman in Toronto for publisher Knopf Canada confirmed the death. Canadian broadcaster CTV Newsnet earlier reported that Richler's agent said the author died Monday. His family announced last week that Richler was undergoing chemotherapy treatment, and his son Jacob said then that the writer's long-term prognosis was very good. Richler had kidney surgery in 1998 for what was widely believed to be cancer, though details of the operation never were disclosed. The author of 10 novels, Richler was best known for his works on Montreal Jewish life in novels including "Barney's Version," and two "St. Urbain's Horseman" and "Solomon Gursky was Here" that were shortlisted for the Booker Prize. "The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz" was made into a film with Richard Dreyfuss in the lead role.

Coming from Canada, being a writer and Jewish as well, I have impeccable paranoia credentials. And furthermore did you know that behind the discovery of America there was a Jewish financier? Everybody writes a book too many. Remember this, Griffin. The revolution eats its own. Capitalism recreates itself.

La Condition Humaine in its English translation its title, Man's Fate . The novel was based on the Shanghai insurrection of 1927. The communist Reds take over the city and a dubious alliance with Chiang Kai-shek's Blues, who then turned against them and re-take the city. In the last pages of the novel, Malraux's protagonist, a European revolutionary, is among a group captured by Chiang Kai-shek's men. They're fed alive, one by one, into the funnel of a coal-fired train engine. In a final act of heroism Malraux's protagonist surrenders his only cyanide pill to a young comrade. Lying awake in bed in Montreal, born too late to have served in the Second World War, I hoped that one day I would be capable of making just such a sacrifice or perhaps something more modest in the name of a noble cause. Instead, well into my sixties, I found myself embroiled in, let's face it, Canada's longest running opera bouffe . A far from life and death struggle, over the size English lettering and outdoor commercial signs in Montreal. I manned the barricades, so to speak, for the legal right to munch unilingually labelled kosher matzah's in Quebec for more than sixty days a year. I also protested the right of a pet shop parrot to be unilingually English. As a consequence, nice people still stop me on the street and thank me for taking a stand. It's embarrassing, for my stand, such as it is, hardly qualifies me as a latter day Spartacus or Tom Paine or Rosa Luxemburg.

Richler, Mordecai Barney's Version
Genre Novel (407 pp.) Keywords Aging Dementia Disability Family Relationships ... Trauma Summary Barney Panofskylike so many of Richler's protagonists (and like Richler himself, one suspects)is a hard-drinking, hard-smoking, foul-mouthed, hedonistic writer and producer. He has many sexual exploits in his past and loads of self doubt in his present, together with digitalis and dentures. But there was only one true love in his life, although he has had three wives: Clara a mysterious artist-poetess whose suicide in Paris helped to establish his fame; "the second Mrs. Panofsky" whom he loathed for all of their short time together; and Miriam, mother of his three children and his partner for decades, until Barney blows it with presumptuous inattention culminating in a vain indiscretion, and she leaves. Since the end of his second marriage, Barney has lived under the shadow of the unproven accusation of having murdered his best friend, Bernard "Boogie" Moscovitch. Supposedly, he committed the crime in a drunken rage provoked by his discovery of Boogie in flagrante with "the second Mrs Panofsky." Barney may have been drunk, but he didn't do it. At least, he doesn't remember doing it.
