MORDECAI RICHLER
Place of birth : Montreal, Quebec
Place of residence : Montreal, Quebec A prominent author, scriptwriter, and essayist, Mordecai Richler was persuaded by his children, Daniel, Emma, Noah, Martha, and Jacob, to write something for them. The result was Jacob Two-Two Meets the Hooded Fang . Started as a bedtime tale for his youngest son, it went on to win two major children's book prizes in 1976. It has been translated into French, Finnish, German and Dutch, recorded, filmed, read on the radio, and adapted as a musical. Jacob Two-Two's adventures continue in two other stories, the most recent, Jacob Two-Two's First Spy Case , winning one of the prestigious 1995 Mr. Christie's Book Awards. Mordecai Richler grew up in Montreal, attended Sir George Williams University, and then lived and wrote in England for many years. Homesick for "blizzards, hockey, smoked-meat sandwiches" and "the mountain lakes of his boyhood", he returned to Canada in 1972, dividing his time between Montreal and Quebec's Eastern Townships.
Awards
  • 1969 Governor General's Literary Award for Cocksure.

Mordecai Richler Biocritical Essay by Victor J. Ramraj
Two clusters of experience from Richler's boyhood, one actual, the other vicarious, have had a marked effect on his artistic psyche: his growing up in the Jewish community of Montreal during the 1930s and 1940s, of which he has stated, "that was my time, my place, and I have elected myself to get it right"; and his consciousness of the conflicts in Europe, particularly of the defense of Madrid, which made a strong impression on him as a boy of nine and later came to be used in his fiction as a metaphor for honour and heroism. The importance to him of these concurrent sets of experience is pointed up by their appearance again and again in various forms in his fiction and non-fiction. He focuses on both with equal intensity in his novels The Acrobats (1954) and Son of a Smaller Hero (1955), both of which are considered "first novels", defined by George Woodcock as works that present "somewhat realistically the problems, aspirations, and agonies of a young writer".
A third-generation Canadian Jew, Richler was born on January 27, 1931, in Montreal, where his grandfather settled after venturing to Canada in 1904 to escape the Eastern European pogroms. Richler grew up in a self-contained world circumscribed by orthodoxy and by fear and ignorance of French and English Canadians. He attended Jewish parochial school, studied the Talmud and was expected to become a rabbi. At Baron Byng High School (the Fletcher's Field of his fiction), a Protestant school, he began to ease away from orthodoxy and to conceive of himself as both Jewish and Canadian, though this was not always an easy complementary conception of himself. "The minority man", he points out, quoting Norman Mailer, "grows up with a double-image of himself, his own and society's".

July 2001 ordecai Richler often admitted he was never anything but a writer. He wasn't an academic who poked away on the side at his latest novel. He did journalistic essays and columns, but they were always freelanced pieces; he never slogged it out as a newsroom reporter. He never worked as a stevedore, ironworker or plumber, though as a Jewish boy growing up in Montreal he studied the Talmud and his parents thought some day he would be a rabbi. He considered himself blessed that he loved the work he did when most people hate the work they do. Richler was born on Jan. 27, 1931, in Montreal. His grandfather, a rabbinical scholar, settled there after arriving in Canada in 1904, when he fled the pogroms of Eastern Europe. Richler's father, Moses Isaac, worked as a scrapyard dealer when the family lived on St. Urbain Street (now famous because of Richler's St. Urbain's Horseman He majored in English at Sir George Williams College in Montreal, but left for Europe without bothering to complete his degree. He first went to Paris, then settled in London, where he lived for the next 20 years. is breakthrough novel was The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz . The book, and later the movie of the same name directed by his close friend Ted Kotcheff, gained Richler international acclaim, and enough money to assure him the time he needed to devote himself entirely to writing.
