El Oso and El Moreno
Mercy Among the Children by David Adams Richards Filed under: oso @ 10:05 am Mercy Among the Children is a bitter antidote to the proud slogans of war between neighbors or nations. Here is the reason to read fiction. Sidney is a pacifist and time after time takes blame for the vicious actions and crimes of others in the town he has known his whole life. Sidney never protests the accusations against him, telling Lyle that a person only hurts himself when he/she tries to hurt someone else. He explains to his son, quoting Camus, that those who have wrongly accused him are suffering more than he himself is. If only our governments could learn this. Unfortunately, when our war mongering leaders choose to attack others rather than looking for all peaceful alternatives, they risk not their own lives, but young men and women who have enlisted in the military (many simply looking for tuition money). Here is a picture I recently found on the net - a photo collage of all the soldiers who, so far, have died in Iraq.

DESPERATE MEASURES
review Hope in the Desperate Hour By David Adams Richards
by PATRICIA SEAMAN
H ope In The Desperate Hour , the new novel from much-loved New Brunswick writer David Adams Richards, is a complex story of betrayal and fallibility. Easter weekend in the Miramichi Valley, where whites and natives share an uneasy, co-dependent relationship, sees the culmination of a lifetime of mistakes and ill-fated love end in catastrophe for the Shackle family and their friends. Events that had been predicted by the much maligned writer Emile Dexter begin to come true with frightening accuracy. All hold hopes for a better future: Garth, whose hockey career was destroyed by an accident; Vicki, his self-serving wife; and Pumpkin, their daughter, who looks after them in their terrible innocence. However, they are trapped in a web of family loyalty, poverty and discontent. They share the desire to escape ignorance and hopelessness that leads their friends and brothers to become academics, or writers, or to join the army. In spite of everyone's efforts they remain emotionally tied to their place of birth. In their own way, each of the characters is trying to get into what Vicki calls "the top two per cent." They want to find an inner circle of privilege where they can enjoy a feeling of acceptance and security. It's this compelling desire for inclusion that finally brings about their destruction. They try to achieve their aspirations through selfishness, ineffectual goodwill or self-promotion, which has the same consequences as intentional malice.

David Adams Richards' Address to RHS Grad Class 2001 Note: This speech was to be given at the Grad Ceremony in June 2001, but due to a mix up regarding the date of the graduation, Mr. Richards was not present address the grads. His speech is presented here in its entirety.. I have traveled much in 30 years or so. In some ways it seems it is all I have ever done. Nor do I think I have a wanderlust per se. At least not much more than the average New Brunswick. Like many of us who travel some part of me always believed I could easily have stayed where I started—at home. But like thousands of others from New Brunswick something, hope of advantage or more to the point, hope of adventure or change, the idea that the world was not quite the world where I was has made me adrift over many years. It has made many of the people I know and care about leave this province as well, many before they ever finished school. The opportunity wasn't here, or the commitment to make our lives equitable to those other lives we read about or saw second hand from other parts of the country or North Americawhatever it was we were the ones so often to say goodbye to loved ones and head on down the road. I started just after high school. I hiked across the Maritimes and throughout Newfoundland. Then I left university at the start of my second year to travel with my brother to England Portugal and Spain, and through the Strait of Gibraltar to the Canary Islands.

This is a pretty good book. It won the Giller Prize in 2000. Maybe I should have rated it 8 instead of 7 but I kept feeling irritated with Sidney (even though that was probably the point). I'm passing this book on to a friend on the condition that she free it afterwards.
