Kenneth Rexroth was not a member of the Beat Generation. Before this phrase was coined by Huncke, then immortalized by Kerouac, he was already a well-known poet and essayist.
Rexroth was born in 1905, in South Bend, Indiana, and died in 1982, in Montecito, California.
In 1940, he called for freedom from traditional styles in po- etry, which he considers artificial. This attitude caused many critics to call him one of the forerunners of the Beat move- ment. In the 1950s , he served as a mentor of sorts to the en- tire Beat scene happening in San Francisco. In 1952, he pub- lished the book length story poem, The Dragon and the Uni- corn that explores the nature of love. In Defense of the Earth published in 1956 contains love poetry, poems directed toward young people, and translations of Japanese poetry.
He was the organizer of the 1955 historical poetry reading at the Six Gallery, where the little-known poet, Allen Ginsberg read the groundbreaking "Howl" for the first time.
Rexroth was also an accomplished painter, and translated poe-

    Winstanley, The Diggers
Excerpt from Communalism: From Its Origins to the Twentieth Century
    By Kenneth Rexroth
Surprisingly the seventeenth century with its almost continuous wars of religion was not a good time for the radical Reformation. Cujis regio, ejus religio — religion had become a matter of large-scale politics. Wars fought between nations and alliances of nations divided Europe into blocks of Catholics, Lutherans, and Calvinists. Small groups of the elect were crushed out by the sheer weight of the contending monsters. Then, too, the Thirty Years War, which was fought to destroy the Holy Roman Empire as the dominant power in Europe, also crushed or profoundly distorted the culture of the various parts of the empire. Germany emerged fragmented and wasted and did not recover for generations. The radical Reformation had been a natural outgrowth of the culture of the late medieval middle of Europe and the Thirty Years War destroyed its roots. In the Netherlands, Switzerland, and amongst the Hutterites in their remote refuges, a process of fossilization had set in. The English Civil War and commonwealth were essentially a product of class struggle, and the proliferation of sects in the latter days of the Civil War took place almost entirely in a lower middle class and upper working class context. In spite of their name, the Levellers were far from being unbridled democrats. They proposed to extend participation in power only to men of substance — small, middle-class substance — like themselves. The Fifth Monarchy men were such extreme chiliasts as to have no real social program.

It is a landmark in the history of cinema, as they say in the highbrow reviews, which means that it does not insult the intelligence of an adult. Fielding's novel Tom Jones has been called one of the three greatest tales in the history of literature. It set the basic type for the plot of the novel of self realization. Tom discovers himself. He finds out, in the course of a series of remarkable adventures, who he is. It is not just that he learns his true parentage and realizes his potentialities; he

An Autobiographical Novel Review Summary Rexroth's autobiography takes him up to the period of his marriage and his settling in San Francisco which is not dated in the book, but since he does talk about the Sacco Vanzetti trial, it does give some sense of the time. He describes a wandering youth where he bummed around the country in a variety of jobscook, cowboy, soapbox orator, painter, poet, and radical organizer. In general he led a very Bohemian life style running around with lots of girls and spending a good deal of time in talk about politics, art and the meaning of life.

Kenneth Rexroth: One Hundred Poems from the Chinese
Kenneth Rexroth is a poet first and a translator second; judged on that basis, his One Hundred Poems from the Chinese is a great success. His approach, set out in a brief introduction, is simply to produce the best English poem he can in the spirit of the original. The resulting translations are more or less free as he thought appropriate for each individual work. The book is in two parts. Part one consists of Rexroth's versions of 35 poems by Du Fu, whom he describes as "the greatest non-epic, non dramatic poet who has survived in any language". He clearly knows these poems well, and his translations are uniformly good. Part two offers around 70 works by Sung dynasty poets; some are represented by only one piece, some by more extensive selections. These tend to be more free, more personal, and often strikingly modern works. In Rexroth's words again: "The whole spirit of this time in China is very congenial today"- a statement as true today as when it was written in 1971. Many of these poets are still not well translated in English, so Rexroth's translations are invaluable. At the back of the book is a brief, but adequate, notes section with information on each poet and explanatory material. Rexroth's concentration on the lesser-known Sung poets is paralleled by his choice of poems in the Du Fu section. He does not confine himself to the best known pieces found in other collections, striking a good balance between the familiar and the new.
