Kenneth Rexroth's Life Caren Irr Rexroth, Kenneth (22 Dec. 1905- 6 June 1982), poet and translator, was born Kenneth Charles Marion Rexroth in South Bend, Indiana, the son of Charles Rexroth, a pharmaceuticals salesman, and Delia Reed. Owing to Charles's rocky career, the family moved frequently throughout the northern midwest until Delia died in 1916 and Charles in 1919. For the next three years, Rexroth lived with an aunt in Chicago. After his expulsion from high school, he educated himself in literary salons, nightclubs, lecture halls, and hobo camps while working as a wrestler, soda jerk, clerk, and reporter. In 1923-1924 he served a prison term for partial ownership of a brothel. During the 1920s, Rexroth backpacked across the country several times, visited Paris and New York, taught in a religious school, and spent two months in a Hudson Valley monastery. Reflections on these experiences appear in his later poetry, but his early work was cubist and surrealistoften opaquely so. In 1927 he married Andrée Schafer, an epileptic painter, and they moved to San Francisco. In the late 1920s Rexroth's first poems appeared in Pagany Morada , and Charles Henri Ford's Blues . He read much of Alfred North Whitehead's philosophy around this time. During the 1930s, Rexroth studied mysticism and Communism. Readings of Jacob Boehme, St. Thomas Aquinas, and John Duns Scotus influenced revisions to his long poem

THE GREAT CANZON
I have come at last to the short
Day and the long shadow when the Hills turn white and the grass fades. Still Longing stays green, stuck in this hard Stone that speaks and hears as if it was A woman. So it was this strange Woman stood cold as shadowed snow, Unmoved as stone by the sweet times When the hills turn warm and turn from White to green and are covered with Flowers and grass. She, when she goes Wreathed in herbs, drives every other Comes to rest in her shadow, she Who has caught me fast between Two hills, faster far than fused stone. No magic gem has her power. No herb can heal her blow. I have Fled through the fields, over the hills, Trying to escape from such a Woman, but there is no wall, no

A resident of San Francisco, he was briefly associated with the beat generation, although he disdained their lack of discipline. Self-educated, he taught himself several languages; his translations include One Hundred Poems from the Japanese (1956) and The Orchid Boat: Women Poets of China (with Ling Chung, 1973). He is best known, however, for his own poetry. Modernist in his early life, simple and Zenlike in his later years, his verse is unified by autobiographical content, a mingling of the personal with the political, and a concern with the transience of life and the transcendent joys of nature and eros. Beat Generation Writer Rexroth's intersection with the Beat Generation vortex began in 1955. Initially he had nice things to say about Kerouac's "Jazz of the Beat Generation" which was published in New World Writing in April 1955. Philip Lamantia introduced Rexroth to Allen Ginsberg and on October 7, 1955 Rexroth was the master of ceremonies at the historic and legendary Six Gallery reading. Together with Lawrence Ferlinghetti , Rexroth heavily influenced the San Francisco renaissance which became swept up in the vortex during the 1950s. Rexroth was born in the midwest and moved to California when he was 22. For a time, he lived on the same street in Chicago as Al Capone . Early on he was politically active joining organizations like the League for the Struggle of Negro Rights. Less a communist or socialist than an anarchist, Rexroth's struggles against mankind's oppression of mankind were more outer-directed and political then personal. His private life records a series of complicated and complex relationships that were primarily dysfunctional and abusive. His poetry, not always a reflection of his reality, is infused with a a lyrical quality that remains appealing. A post to the rec.arts.books newsgroup declares: "My rock bottom comfort book when nothing else helps: Kenneth Rexroth's translation:
