Dessie was a Trustee and great friend of the MKR Society until she passed away in April 2002. Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings , a member of the Florida Artists Hall of Fame, is probably best-known for her 1938 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, The Yearling , set in Florida’s Big Scrub country ( the present-day Ocala National Forest ), and for her nonfiction book, Cross Creek . Several of her works have been made into popular films . Her former home, farm and citrus grove at rural Cross Creek, FL just south of Gainesville is a popular pilgrimage destination for her many fans. The site has an active

Famous Floridians: Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings
Marjorie began writing at the early age of 6. When she was only 11, she received a $2 prize for a story published in the Washington Post. She went on to become a journalist in the 1920s and, as such, she was something of a trailblazer.
Rawlings came to Florida to visit in 1926 and fell in love with the land. Two years later, she returned to buy 72 acres at Cross Creek, near Gainesville, dividing her time between growing oranges and writing fiction.
In 1938, Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction for The Yearling, her best-known work about a young boy named Jody who lives in rural Florida, and adopts an orphaned fawn as a pet. As both the boy and the fawn grow, Jody struggles with the practical hardships of life on a farm, family relationships and expectations, and his responsibilities as he approaches adulthood. This story was based on actual events. However, in real life it was a girl who adopted the fawn.
Several of her books have been made into movies including The Yearling and a semiautobiographical work entitled Cross Creek. In this book, she describes how she first arrived in Florida and came to love its rural way of life, despite the hardships it entailed. Rawlings, who loved food, entertaining, and growing vegetables and herbs, followed Cross Creek with the publication of Cross Creek Cookery.

Rawlings House is a Visit to a Past Era

Cross Creek, Florida"Cross Creek is a bend in a country road, by land, and the flowing of Lachloosa Lake into Orange Lake, by water. We are four miles west of the small village of Island Grove, nine miles east of a turpentine still, and on the other sides we do not count distance at all, for the two lakes and the broad marshes create an infinite space between us and the horizon." Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings
Rawlings House is a Visit to a Past Era
By Patricia Lieb
And so goes the story of Cross Creek by Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings. It is an awesome feeling that makes your flesh tremble. Actually, visiting the home of Marjorie Rawlings is enough to make a writer want to sit down at the table on the verandah at the old manual typewriter and start pounding out a story about a deer flashing by, its white tail leaving a plot strong enough for an entire novel.
It is easy to see why Rawlings loved the small, peaceful town of Cross Creek and the wildlife paradise in the rich Florida hammocks. This is the perfect setting for a story of a way of life now gone almost everywhere, even in the back areas in such out-of-the way places as this.

    Rawlings, Marjorie Kinnan
American novelist, whose works explore the need for humans to live in harmony with the natural environment. Her books reflect her love of the land, particularly the land and people of north central Florida. In 1938 Rawlings was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for fiction for her young adult novel The Yearling (1938), the popular and critical success of which made her one of the most beloved of American children's authors.
She was born Marjorie Kinnan in Washington, D.C. After her father died in 1913, she moved with her mother and brother to Madison, Wisconsin, where she soon enrolled at the University of Wisconsin, graduating in 1918 with a B.A. degree in English. The next year she married fellow writer Charles A. Rawlings, Jr., and moved with him to Rochester, New York, where she worked as a newspaper writer. In 1928 Rawlings purchased an orange grove in Cross Creek, Florida, where she and her husband subsequently moved to restore the farm to working condition. After divorcing her husband in 1933, Rawlings stayed in Cross Creek. She married Norton Sanford Baskin, a restaurant and hotel operator, in 1941.
The rural atmosphere of her surroundings in Florida inspired Rawlings to write fiction, including the novels Jacob's Ladder (1931), which was originally published as a short story, and South Moon Under (1933), as well as a emiautobiographical work entitled Cross Creek (1943). It describes how she first arrived in Florida and came to love its rural way of life, despite the hardships it entailed. The book was made into a motion picture in 1983.
