RJ RANDISI -
BLOOD is the third book in the Detective Joe Keough series, the second since he moved to St. Louis from New York. ( Alone with the Dead In the Shadow of the Arch are both available in paper.) A political figure is killed, and it happens to be the man who helped Keough relocate from NY to St. Louis. It falls to Keough to solve the murder and he has feelings of guilt over not having kept in closer contact with the man while alive. Keough also undergoes some changes in his personal life.
Where did you get the background idea for Detective Joe Keough?

My mystery book group here in metropolitan St. Louis read this book because of the local connection: it's set in St. Louis, and the author, Robert Randisi, now lives in St. Louis. But beyond the local interest, there isn't much to this book. The story meanders. And we all felt that we knew who committed the murder, but we didn't know why.

The Offer by Robert J. Randisi (Five Star, $25.95, V) ISBN 0-7862-4865-3 Assistant museum curator Robin Lobianco has uncharacteristically participated in a ménage a trois with Vince and Amy Wheaton. Now her shame after the incident has her avoiding the young couple, which is why she is astounded when the couple professes their love for her and invite her to move in. Robin declines the offer and informs Vince and Amy in no uncertain terms that she no longer wishes to be associated with them. The next day Robin begins to receive bizarre greeting cards and notices that Vince and Amy have begun stalking her. Robin is not sure how public she wants to go with her experiences, but she is spooked and calls the St. Louis police who dispatch Detective Jack Jones. Jones is an aging detective who has lost three partners recently, and has married a stripper half his age. Jones has been on limited duty, but this assignment seems to be a good one for him to get back into things. Jones, for some reason, is taken with Robin and is determined to help her. He begins probing the couple and finds similarities to cases in Omaha. Not having anything specific to arrest the couple on, Jones watches and waits. An attack on Robin’s estranged husband and two deaths cause Jones to become very vigilant, as he is sure Robin will be the next target.

Although Detective Joe Keough has worked in St. Louis for less than a year, he has attained the reputation as the city police force's number one homicide cop. After stopping a gruesome serial killer, Joe is a hero on a par with home run slugger Mark McGwire. Joe's latest case takes him to the Gateway Arch where he finds the bludgeoned body of the person responsible for his new home and job in St. Louis. Joe deeply believes he owes it to Mark Drucker to solve the case by bringing the murderer to justice. Joe quickly realizes he knows very little about his mentor including how Mark earned his money. As Joe digs for clues and answers, another homicide directly linked to the Drucker case occurs. Keough slowly wades through the city's movers and shakers determined to uncover the truth even as his inquiries leave some individuals very nervous about what the persistent detective will learn. Robert J. Randisi has written an electrifying police procedural novel that will makes fans of the sub-genre extremely happy with this special work. BLOOD ON THE ARCH moves at a very rapid pace, with many delightful red herrings interwoven into the plot to fool Joe and the audience. Though the subplot about his health brings readers closer to the Joe, the protagonist is clearly a maverick who follows his own moral beliefs when it conflicts with the rules. This, in turn, leaves readers wondering about the enigmatic Joe and wanting more tales to learn more about his past and present motivations.

Introduction
by Robert J. Randisi
You arehopefullyholding in your hand the next step in a new medium: original stories written for electronic publishing. This site, however, takes this medium even one step further. You are actually meant to read these stories on a Handheld Computer. Now, I know little about computers beyond what I need to know to generate my own manuscripts. But I'm not here to critique this site, I'm here to introduce these stories. (At least, I think that's what I'm here to do.) You see, as little as I know about computers and web sites, I know quite a bit about writing, and what HendHeldCrime is presenting here, in its debut, are four quite well written, clever little yarns. If these stories are any indication of what's to come, this site will be presenting quality mystery fiction in what is meant to beand what I am sure will bean easy to read format. In "Slightly Tarnished Armor," Chris Mills presents us with a story in his series featuring his P.I. Matthew Dain. Hugh Lessig's marvelously titled "Black Book, White Deaths," features newspaperman Picasso Smith, and while I'm not sure whether or not Mr. Smith is a series character, I can only hope that he is. J. Michael Blue's "Drafting for Charlie," is a wicked little Airport caper story. And "X's for Eyes," by Victor Gischler is a clever and funny story about the odd breakup of a relationship. There you have them, four quite different stories that have a couple of things in common. They are well told and well written, and they are presented on HandheldCrime for your pleasure.

Editors' Welcome
4 July 2000
Welcome to the first issue of HandHeldCrime. When we started work on this publication, we had a few goals in mind. We wanted to build a magazine around quality genre fiction; we wanted to work with established websites to bring select fiction to users of handheld computers; and we wanted to have fun. Obviously, the final decision on the magazine itself will be up to you, the readers and subscribers, and we fully expect to make some changes along the way. But we can say, right now and with no qualifications, that we've had a great time putting this first issue together. Working with authors and site owners who really care about crime fiction has been a wonderful experience. They've had excellent suggestions and thoughts on the enterprise from the beginning, and they have been genuinely excited about the project. We look forward to working with them again, as well as others like them. We also look forward to hearing from you, our readers. Please let us know what you like and don't like, as well as any suggestions you have for HandHeldCrime. If you had problems subscribing to or downloading this issue, let us know so that we can fix them or make it easier. And we would appreciate your help in spreading the word about HandHeldCrime to others who may be interested. One thing you'll notice is that this issue is hardboiled in tone and content. There are broken relationships, romantics disguised as cynics, and weapons that range from guns to fountain pens. As HandHeldCrime grows, we expect to bring you quality fiction from other mystery subgenres as well as features and reviews.
