Another Randall Misfire?
Alice Randall, who parodied Gone with the Wind , received an injunction from the Margaret Mitchell estate, and won her case on appeal, is suggesting that Pushkin was part of the Harlem Renaissance with her next novel. Alas, Carlin Romano isn't impressed: "Unfortunately, Randall's effort drags for many of the same reasons "The Wind Done Gone'' did: overwriting and repetition, tiresome thumping of racial resentment, and a pathetic Afrocentric need to claim scalps for the cause. Windsor's logorrhea suggests that Randall's own self-absorption trumped any ambition to master her invented subject. The entire Russian aspect of the book reads like pretentious window dressing for a shapeless vanity tale." TrackBack

Bob Randall: A Life to Celebrate and Emulate
Posted by Gary Storck on June 28, 2001

by Kevin B. Zeese, President of Common Sense for Drug Policy
This Saturday, June 23, 2001, in Sarasota, Florida I joined approximately 70 people in a celebration of Robert Randall's life. Since that time my thoughts have kept returning to Bob and what his life taught others and me. I thought sharing these thoughts might help all of us be better reformers.
I drove to the celebration of Bob's life from Tampa, Florida with Elvy Musikka. Bob was the first legal medical marijuana patient, Elvy the third. The second legal patient, Irvin Rosenfeld was also at the celebration. After Elvy and I updated each other on our lives and work we were drawn to a focus on Bob. We each recognized how he had touched our lives, improved our activism and made us better people.
Elvy noted that when her vision was weakening she came across an article from the late 1970s about Bob - a glaucoma patient, like her, who was preserving his sight by using medical marijuana. She saved the article for years. In 1988 she was arrested for growing marijuana and she received a call from Bob Randall. She had never met him or talked with him prior to that moment. It was typical of Bob, and Alice O'Leary his partner for 27 years, to reach out to seriously ill people in their time of greatest need, help them to find a way through the thicket of problems they faced and provide them with the assistance they needed to succeed.

Churchill Foerst Wyman McKindley ... Home page ALLEN M. RANDALL "History of Berrien County, Michigan" 1906. Page 668. ALLEN M. RANDALL. The production of peaches, apples and berries claims the time and attention of Allen M. Randall, one of the successful horticulturists of Bainbridge township. He was born May 1, 1842, in Wallaceburg, Ontario, Canada, and was only six years of age when he came to the United States with his uncle, James I. Randall Mr. Randall and his brother William sold goods in Millburg for a period of fifteen years, beginning in 1865. They also operated a sawmill and grist mill and other industries a part of the time. All of his children were born during their residence in Millburg. On the 13th of January, 1870, Mr. Randall was united in marriage to Miss Adelaide M. Sutherland, a daughter of William Sutherland. She was born on the farm where she now lives on the 29th of November, 1846, and with the exception of a few years has always resided upon this place. She represents one of the old prominent and honored families of Berrien county. The representatives of the name in this section of the state were Lott and David Sutherland, and a third brother, Justus Sutherland, who resided in Allegan county. David Sutherland came with his sons from New York and spent three years near Kalamazoo. He located the sons upon property in this portion of the state and died soon afterward. His sons were William, Bushrod, John and George, of whom Bushrod resided in this vicinity, while John made hishome in Pipestone township, and George settled near Kalamazoo. All are now deceased.

The Wind Done Gone
by Alice Randall From the cover: In this daring and provocative literary parody, which has captured the interest and imagination of a nation, Alice Randall explodes the world created in Gone With the Wind , a work that more than any other has defined our image of the antebellum South. Taking sharp aim at the romanticized, whitewashed mythology perpetrated by this Southern classic, Randall has ingeniously conceived a multi-layered, emotionally complex tale of her own – that of Cynara, the mulatto half-sister, who, beautiful and born into slavery, manages to break away from her damaging world of the Old South to emerge into full life as a daughter, a lover, a mother, a victor. The Wind Done Gone is a passionate love story, a wrenching portrait of a tangled mother-daughter relationship, and a book that “celebrates a people’s emancipation not only from bondage but also from history and myth, custom and stereotype” (San Antonio Express-News) List price is $12.00 but at leftbooks.com it’s 15 % off, only$9.99. Mariner Books, Alice Randall, 2002, ISBN 0-618-21906-4, Soft Cover, 210 p.p.

78. The Curry County Reporter, Newspaper For Gold Beach, Oregon With Gold Beach Oreg
Obituaries for this week include randall Robert Martin, alice Bailey Martin and Michael Tomas. randall Robert Martin November
http://www.currycountyreporter.com/obits20.shtml
This week’s obituary is Hallie Bowen.
Hallie Eleanora Bowen
Aug. 19, 1910 – Dec. 21, 2003
Hallie Eleanora (Stone) Bowen, 93, of Gold Beach, died December 21, 2003 in Gold Beach following a brief illness.
Hallie was born August 19, 1910 in Plymouth, Kansas. As a young child, she moved with her family to Saskatchewan, Canada and as a pre-teen, moved to Tumwater, WA. She finished high school and attended business college in Pasadena, CA. She then worked for five years as the secretary at the Holliston Ave. Methodist Church in Pasadena.
On April 30, 1935 she married Glenn Ray Bowen at the church where she was employed, and he worked with the youth. The marriage was held at 7:00 a.m. to allow the sunrise to stream in through the stained glass windows, as well as to allow the church youth to attend prior to their school day.
The couple made their home in Pasadena until 1941 when they purchased a farm in Beagle, Oregon. The Beagle area, including the Bowen farm, was taken by the government during WWII for the construction of Camp White. The Bowens continued to make their home in the Rogue Valley area until 1948 when they moved to Knight’s Ferry, CA. In 1954, they returned to Oregon and ranched in the Rogue River area, until 1971, when they purchased a ranch in Myrtle Creek.
The couple moved to Gold Beach in 1989. Mr. Bowen passed away in November of 1991, and Mrs. Bowen continued to live in Gold Beach in her own home until just two weeks prior to her death.
