Spotlight on
Alice Randall:

Who Owns Black Voices at Tara?
Late in 2000, an announcement went out informing recipients that a book review and group discussion session sponsored by the Harvard-Radcliffe Club of Middle Tennessee would be held at the Blair Boulevard home of a club member there in Nashville. The title of the book to be discussed was to be announced according to the invitation. It turned out that the book discussed at that December 5 meeting was The Wind Done Gone, by Alice Randall. It can be assumed that most of the people in greater Nashville outside of the Harvard-Radcliffe Club of Middle Tennessee did not know who Alice Randall is. Though I hold myself out as a specialist on books published in the last decade of the 20th century by and about black people, I had no idea that Alice Randall was a black woman, that she had written a book, and that she was the president-elect of the local Harvard Club at the time. Of course, I did not know that she was one of the few black award-winning western songwriters in Nashville, the writer of the lyrics to hits like Trisha Yearwood's "XXX's and OOO's: An American Girl," and a screenwriter as well. These gaps in my knowledge were filled by events soon to unfold. Within four months of that meeting, Alice Randall's name became well known among those who follow book publishing. In the May 2001 issue of this newsletter I opined that the Wind Done Gone flap was the biggest to occur in the first four months of this year with regard to a black book - and that over a book that had not even been published. (Readers are invited to read that article).

With her parody The Wind Done Gone, author Alice Randall skewers the racism of Gone With the Wind
    By Fred Goss
From The Advocate, September 11, 2001 In The Wind Done Gone, Gone With the Wind, author Alice Randall has achieved what some might have deemed impossible: She has burst the bubble of a cherished American myth, exposing the inherent racism and injustice of a chunk of Americana that has loomed over the landscape of our popular fiction for 65 years. A successful Nashville songwriter, Randall has packed every line of her diminutive parody with enough poetic punch to knock the colossal Gone With the Wind right out of the ring. In spite of legal roadblocks thrown up by the Mitchell estate to keep the book from being published, Randall has prevailed. In so doing, she has shown us that small can be large, straight can be gay, and white can indeed be black. Most significant, The Wind Done Gone What was your motivation in making Dreamy Gentleman gay?

saic home ... awards Parody on Trial Alice Randall Writing In-Sanity By Lamaretta Simmons All eyes are on first time novelist, Alice Randall, and her bid to have her book, The Wind Done Gone , released from the throes of the American Courts. The Wind Done Gone is a parody of Margaret Mitchell's 1936 novel, Gone with The Wind , which is considered by many one of the hallmarks of great American literature about the slave south. Randall chose to parody GWTW , after years of coping with what she has termed the "racist lies and racist language" of the text.
GWTW and would inhibit licensing of any other sequels or offspring of GWTW and offered instead that Randall's book is a form of literary piracy and is a derivative work, infringing on the intellectual property rights of Mitchell.
In April, a federal judge, agreeing with the Mitchell Trusts, blocked publication of Randall's novel. The U.S. Court of Appeals in Atlanta overturned the injunction in May, allowing for the book's publication. Despite borrowing several scenes and lines of dialogue from the original novel, Randall and her publishers insist the book is an original work of serious parody and is protected by the First Amendment.
Several academic and literary heavyweights have come out in support of Randall, including Toni Morrison, Harper Lee, Arthur Schlessinger, and Ishmael Reed. Randall, though upset that the book is in legal conflict, said that the support from the literary world has been wonderful.

Alice Randall to Discuss The Wind Done Gone
      June 6
Besieged novelist and country songwriter Alice Randall will discuss her forthcoming book, The Wind Done Gone Gone With the Wind . However, Houghton Mifflin appealed the ruling and dozens of Randall’s fellow authors and scholars came to her defense. On Friday (May 25), a three-judge panel lifted the injunction. Barring further legal curbs, the book should be in stores by the last week of June. Randall is also a country songwriter. Her biggest hit to date was "XXX’s And OOO’s (An American Girl)," which she co-wrote with Matraca Berg . It was a No. 1 single for two weeks for Trisha Yearwood in 1994. Randall's songs also have been recorded by Moe Bandy

In songs of Schumann and Schubert his delivery of the text was vivid, and this was not just a matter of clear diction but of a compelling desire to bring texts to life. His voice is hearty and robust, especially in the lower range, and his lovely, soft singing in high-lying phrases was poignant."

    In Memory: Robert Randall
Father of the Medical Marijuana Movement
The drug reform movement lost one of its heroes in June when Robert Randall succumbed to AIDS at age 53 at his home in Sarasota, Florida. It can be said with little exaggeration that Randall pioneered the contemporary medical marijuana movement.
In 1976, Randall made legal and medical history when he persuaded a federal court in Washington, DC, that his use of marijuana to treat his glaucoma was a medical necessity. At the same time, he petitioned the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for permission to legally use it. In November, 1976, Randall became the first person in modern U.S. history to obtain legal, medical access to marijuana.
Robert Randall and Alice O'Leary, co-founders of ACT, Alliance for Cannabis Therapeutics, the first non-profit organization dedicated to reforming the laws prohibiting medical marijuana use
Randall's struggles launched the modern medical marijuana movement in the US. The federal government attempted to cut off Randall's supply in 1978, but he sued to be able to continue to use marijuana for his glaucoma-and won again. His victory compelled the federal government to establish a special "Compassionate IND" program, under which he was able to gain access to a non-approved drug. He continued to receive U.S. government-supplied joints ever since.
