Alice Randall's new book addresses universal truths, challenges stereotypes
By YVETTE BLACKMAN, Associated Press writer
If novelist Alice Randall stirred up trouble with her controversial parody, "The Wind Done Gone," she kicks up dirt with her second novel, "Pushkin and the Queen of Spades" (Houghton Mifflin, 280 pages, $24), which challenges stereotypes about race, beauty and motherhood, and explores the taboo subject of interracial relationships.
"Pushkin and the Queen of Spades" is a densely packed philosophical discussion about black culture and family, with all of its hopes and flaws "stories of folk who squeezed love from madness."
Randall's characters are vividly portrayed, strong, complex and sometimes tragic. We don't always agree with what they say or do but we certainly understand the motivation behind it.
The novel tells the story of Windsor Armstrong, a professor of Russian literature whose beloved son, Pushkin X, has become a successful, professional football player and is about to marry a white Russian immigrant, who happens to be a lap dancer.
But more about that later.

In this daring and provocative literary parody which has captured the interest and imagination of a nation, Alice Randall explodes the world created in Gone With the Wind , a work that more than any other has defined our image of the antebellum South. Taking sharp aim at the romanticized, whitewashed mythology perpetrated by this southern classic, Randall has ingeniously conceived a multilayered, emotionally complex tale of her own - that of Cynara, the mulatto half-sister, who, beautiful and brown and born into slavery, manages to break away from the damaging world of the Old South to emerge into full life as a daughter, a lover, a mother, a victor. The Wind Done Gone is a passionate love story, a wrenching portrait of a tangled mother-daughter relationship, and a book that "celebrates a people's emancipation not only from bondage but also from history and myth, custom and stereotype" (San Antonio Express-News).

The Wind Done Gone is a novel written in the form of a first-person diary. How would you describe Cynara's voice? How does her language evolve over the course of the book?

Weaver Contributing Writer e-mail this article print this article comment on this article Amid an unbelievable amount of legal wrangling and political posturing, there's this little book called The Wind Done Gone You may have heard of it. Gone With the Wind , a sacrilegious retelling of a literary classic or a revisionist history of a vastly overrated, racist melodrama. Before it's even available to be bought or borrowed, the book has sparked international media attention and ignited a firestorm of debate about whether it should be published at all. Now that an appeals court judge has cleared the way, Houghton Mifflin promises that books will be in stores by the end of this month. Pretty much lost in all that rancor is the question of whether The Wind Done Gone is a good book. Does it stand on its own literary merit?

    Interview with Alice Randall
    By Lamaretta Simmons
On the Event of Alice Randall's reading at The Poetry Center, she was interviewed by F Newsmagazine, the student newspaper of The School of the Art Institute of Chicago
Parody on Trial: Alice Randall Writing In-Sanity All eyes are on first time novelist, Alice Randall, and her bid to have her book, The Wind Done Gone , released from the throes of the American courts. The Wind Done Gone is a parody of Margaret Mitchell's 1936 novel, Gone with The Wind, which is considered by many one of the hallmarks of great American literature about the slave south. Randall chose to parody GWTW, after years of coping with what she has termed the "racist lies and racist language" of the text.
In April, a federal judge, agreeing with the Mitchell Trusts, blocked publication of Randall's novel. The U.S. Court of Appeals in Atlanta overturned the injunction in May, allowing for the book's publication. Despite borrowing several scenes and lines of dialogue from the original novel, Randall and her publishers insist the book is an original work of serious parody and is protected by the First Amendment.
Several academic and literary heavyweights have come out in support of Randall, including Toni Morrison, Harper Lee, Arthur Schlessinger, and Ishmael Reed. Randall, though upset that the book is in legal conflict, said that the support from the literary world has been wonderful. "It meant that people who create things understood what I was doing, that I was not stealing from someone who created. Writers understood what I was doing, and that was tremendous to me," Randall said. "I have a right to speak my mind, to speak in contradiction, to give another point of view."
