The 1999 addition to the Literary Arts stamp series honors Ayn Rand, the author of The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged . Born Alissa Rosenbaum in St. Petersburg, Russia, Ayn Rand came to the U.S. in 1926 at the age of 21, and later became a U.S. citizen. Rand believed that a productive society is the result of individual freedom and effort. Her philosophy influenced all of her books and made her a controversial but respected author. The stamp art was illustrated by Nicholas Gaetano, who also illustrated book jackets for several recent editions of Ayn Rand’s books.

  • Life Rand’s Ethical Theory: The Virtue of Selfishness
Life Ayn Rand's life was often as colorful as those of her heroes in her best-selling novels The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged . Rand first made her name as a novelist, publishing We the Living in 1936, The Fountainhead in 1943, and her magnum opus Atlas Shrugged in 1957. These philosophical novels embodied themes she then developed in non-fiction form in a series of essays and books written in the 1960s and 1970s. Born in St. Petersburg, Russia, on February 2, 1905, Rand was raised in a middle-class family. As a child, she loved story-telling, and she decided at age nine to become a writer. In school showed academic promise, particularly in mathematics. Her family was devastated by the communist revolution of 1917, both by the social upheavals that the revolution and the ensuing civil war brought and by her father's pharmacy's being confiscated by the Soviets. The family moved to the Crimea to recover financially and to escape the harshness of life the revolution brought to St. Petersburg. They later returned to Petrograd (the new name given to St. Petersburg by the Soviets), where Rand was to attend university. At the University of Petrograd, Rand concentrated her studies on history, with secondary focuses on philosophy and literature. At university, she was repelled by the dominance of communist ideas and strong-arm tactics that suppressed free inquiry and discussion. As a youth, she had been repelled by the communists' political program, and now an adult, she was also more fully aware of the destructive effects that the revolution had had on Russian society more broadly.

Russian-born novelist and philosopher Ayn Rand's inspiring moral defense of individualism and liberty Ayn Rand (1905-1982) won over millions to the the moral values of individualism and liberty which had fallen out of fashion more than a century ago. There continues to be a lively interest in her ideas. The 1997 release of Michael Paxton's documentary film Ayn Rand: A Sense of Life was nominated for an Academy Award. In May 1999, Showtime aired The Passion of Ayn Rand starring Helen Mirren as Rand, Peter Fonda as her husband Frank O'Connor, Eric Stoltz as her principal associate Nathaniel Branden and Judy Delpy as Barbara Branden (both a Rand associate and author of the acclaimed biography on which the movie was based). Ayn Rand(Redirected from Ayn rand)
Ayn Rand (Ayn rhymes with "mine"), born Alissa (Alice) Zinovievna Rosenbaum (February 2, 1905 - March 6, 1982), was a controversial American philosopher and novelist, most famous for her philosophy of Objectivism. Her philosophy and her fiction both emphasize above all the human individual and the genius of which he is capable. Her novels were based upon the Randian hero, a man whose genius leads others to reject him, but who nonetheless perseveres to prove himself. Rand viewed this hero as the "ideal man" and made it the express goal of her literature to show these men.
US postage stamp honoring Rand (1999)
    Biography
Ayn Rand was born to Jewish parents in Saint Petersburg, Russia. She studied philosophy and history at the University of Petrograd. In late 1925 she was granted a visa to visit with American relatives. She arrived in the U.S. in February 1926, at the age of 21. After a brief stay with them in Chicago, she resolved never to return to the USSR and set out for Los Angeles to become a screenwriter. She then changed her name to Ayn Rand, partly to avoid Soviet retaliation against her family for her anti-socialist views.
Initially, Rand struggled in Hollywood and took odd jobs to pay her basic expenses. While working as a Hollywood extra on Cecil B. DeMille's King of Kings she bumped into (on purpose) an aspiring young actor, Frank O'Connor, and married him in 1929.

Three Ruling Values To Help You Grow
Through its three-part Ideal Self program—adapted from Hyrum Smith's book What Matters Most —Central Florida Objectivists show members how to live rational yet passionate lives of personal fulfillment and achievement. DISCOVER Objectivism holds individual human life in this world as the standard of all moral values and your life as an end in itself. Our ruling value of S elf- E steem drives our weekly Love Your Life online chats as we rigorously examine Ayn Rand’s philosophy. Participants learn about the objective nature of human life in general and themselves in particular. Integration of these lessons allows participants to defend their minds against the postmodernists of the Left and the religionists of the Right so they can live their own lives happily and without obstruction.
