Rand Versus Peikoff
by Robert J. Bidinotto ( Bidinotto@compuserve.com
This is the third of my 3-part series analyzing the controversy over the interpretation of key aspects of the Objectivist ethics. "Facts, Values, and Moral Sanctions" is my discussion of Leonard Peikoff's essay, "Fact and Value," and of companion essays by Peter Schwartz, titled "On Moral Sanctions," and "On Sanctioning the Sanctioners." "Understanding Peikoff" is my interpretation of the reasons for Leonard Peikoff's evolving perspectives on these issues. In the following essay, I discuss other ways in which Peikoff's views diverge from those of his mentor, Ayn Rand. It appears that to some, at least Leonard Peikoff's "Fact and Value," and Peter Schwartz's essays "On Moral Sanctions" and "On Sanctioning the Sanctioners," accurately represent Ayn Rand's perspectives on how to pass moral judgments. In view of Ayn Rand's own words on these subjects, however, I find that interpretation astonishing. I have already pointed out (in "Understanding Peikoff," and in my 1989 open letter, "Facts, Values and Moral Sanctions") that Peikoff and Schwartz contradicted Ayn Rand on the issue of whether she ought to be judged in toto (i. e., by both her expressed convictions

Branden's recent writings on Rand and Objectivism
by Eyal Mozes
This is a critique of several of Nathaniel Branden's recent writings about Ayn Rand and Objectivism, published on the Objectivism WWW Service ( http://www.vix.com/Objectivism ). My theme is to point out the highly negative and hostile tone of a lot of Branden's writings, and the many unbased accusations he makes against Rand and against Objectivists in general. Sections 1 and 2 discuss two of the charges Branden makes against Objectivists in general in his paper "The Benefits and Hazards of the Philosophy of Ayn Rand" - originally published in 1982, and recently published again on the Objectivism WWW Service. Section 3 discusses Branden's persistent habit, present throughout his writings, of making unsupported personal accusations against Ayn Rand. 1. The accusation of "dogmatic religion" Ayn always insisted that her philosophy was an integrated whole, that it was entirely self-consistent, and that one could not reasonably pick elements of her philosophy and discard others. In effect, she declared, "It's all or nothing". ... This is insistence turned Ayn Rand's philosophy, for all practical purposes, into dogmatic religion, and many of her followers chose that path. The true believers might respond by saying, "How can you call it dogmatic religion when we can prove every one of Ayn Rand's propositions?!" My answer to that is, "The hell you can!" Prior to our break, Ayn Rand credited me with understanding her philosophy better than any other person alive and not merely better, but far better. I know what we were in a position to prove, I know where the gaps are. And so can anyone else by careful, critical reading. It's not all that difficult or complicated.

Ayn Rand: A Sense of Life
    USA - 1997
    Movie Review By Andrea Chase
I don't know that a survey has been taken of how many people became architects because they read Ayn Rand's novel, "The Fountainhead," or saw the film based on it, but it's hard to find an architect who hasn't at least heard of it. Almost 20 years after her death, Rand's books, which also include "Atlas Shrugged" and "We the Living," continue to sell over 100,000 copies a year. And they're not light reading. They preach uncompromising individualism and free-market capitalism that makes Hong Kong look like a planned economy. The early part of "Ayn Rand: A Sense of Life" explain how Rand came to that philosophy. Her prosperous merchant family was persecuted by the bolsheviks in their native Russia. In the midst of the political turmoil of her childhood, Rand took refuge in adventure stories and American movies. America became for her, the ideal country, peopled with rugged individualists making their way in a free society. This part of the documentary is full of revealing excerpts from her letters and diaries in which she dreams of a life away from the Soviet Union and her boundless joy when she finally arrives as an ÈmigrÈ in New York. Equally fascinating is the series of coincidences that brought her to the attention of Cecil B. DeMille and started her on her career in Hollywood.

Timeline The Ayn Rand Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval AYNcards One woman. One movement. One head. One destiny.
The Atomic Menace: Catalyst Of Destiny August 1945: The atomic bomb explodes over Japan, ending World War Two and changing the face of the world forever in more ways than one. Ayn Rand, fresh from the success of seeing her novel The Fountainhead brought to the silver screen at last, is invited to view the Manhattan Project's first test by Richard Feynman, an admirer of Rand's lock-picking and safe-cracking burlesque act in the thirties. He justifies it to military bureaucracy by telling them that her efforts to instill good Objectivist thinking into the minds of America make her the perfect witness for the event. The earth-shattering power of the blast shocks everyone but Rand, who in the first few seconds finds a joyful confirmation of her belief in the power of the human mind. Alone among the architects of the device, Robert Oppenheimer finds his voice and quotes the Bagavad-Ghita: "I am become Death, Shatterer of Worlds." Rand reaches over to smack him for being a namby-pamby liberal, but halts midway: the doubts have affected her, too. In years to come, atomic testing in the Pacific and the deserts of Nevada will send Ayn Rand and Howard Hughes the two archetypes of American life and culture into paroxysms of fear over radioactivity and the terrible power of atomic weapons. Much like America herself, Hughes retreats further into mental illness, drug-fuelled paranoia and a feces-collecting hobby; Rand alone shrugs off her doubts, gathers her strength and seeks to overcome the problem with technology, reason, kung-fu and novel-writing.

"Rarely has a writer and thinker of the stature of Ayn Rand afforded us access to her most intimate thoughts and feelings. From Journals of Ayn Rand , we gain an invaluable new understanding and appreciation of the woman, the artist, and the philosopher, and of the enduring legacy she has left us." "Rand comes vibrantly to life as an untried screenwriter in Hollywood, creating stories that reflect her youthful vision of the world. We see her painful memories of communist Russia and her struggles to convey them in We the Living . Most fascinating is the intricate, step-by-step process through which she created the plots and characters of her two masterworks, The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged , and the years of painstaking research that imbued the novels with their powerful authenticity." "Complete with reflections on her legendary screenplay concerning the making of the atomic bomb and tantalizing descriptions of projects cut short by her death, Journals of Ayn Rand illuminates the mind and heart of an extraordinary woman as no biography or memoir ever could. On these vivid pages, Ayn Rand lives. "

    Ayndrej Bauer

Approved by www.ari.org Do you want to become an Objectivist but do not have enough time and patience to read The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged ? Now you can join the fun in just ten easy steps! Step 1: Axioms
    Step 2: Reason and Logic

    Step 3: Identity

    Step 4: Concept
    ...
    Step 10: Objectivism in Practice

    See responses to this document.
    Step 1: Axioms
Axioms are the most obvious statements from which everything else follows. The Objectivist axioms are set up in such a way that they are irrefutable. Anyone trying to object to them must implicitly assume them even before he or she can formulate a counter-argument. Axiom of Identity: A is A Axiom of Subject: I am aware of something. Axiom of Object: I am aware of something. The first axiom is pretty much self explanatory. It will be discussed further in the section about Identity. It may appear at a first glance that the Axiom of Subject and the Axiom of Object are the same. However, they are really like two sides of the same coin. The Axiom of Subject puts emphasis on the word I , whereas the Axiom of Object stresses the word something . Their apparent similarity reminds me of the fact that I cannot be aware without being aware of something. Exercise:
Read out loud the Axioms of Subject and Object with proper emphasis. For extra credit, do it in front of a mirror.
