Allan Ramsay
Allan Ramsay, Scottish portrait painter, was the eldest son of the poet Allan Ramsay (1685-1758). He was trained in Italy, and worked first in Edinburgh. From 1757, when he painted his first portrait of George III , then Prince of Wales, Ramsay was increasingly in demand as a royal portraitist. In 1762, he settled in London, and in 1767 was appointed portrait painter to George III.
Though this appointment provided generous and steady income, it brought Ramsay to the decline of his artistic individuality. All his best works were fulfilled before the royal appointment. His style used to be simple and delicate, he especially excelled in portraits of women. As he had a lot of commissions for royal portraits, he had to drop the rest of his practice. Also his art weakened, the painting became like a mechanical process for him, until an accident to his arm in 1773 prevented him from painting altogether.
Ramsay’s best paintings however will always be among the supreme achievements of British art. Notes Janet Dick – in 1736 she secretly married her cousin, Alexander Dick, Ramsay’s companion in Italy, later Sir Alexander Dick Cunnynghame of Prestonfield.

Allan Ramsay, Senior (1686-1758)
Born on October 15, 1686 in Leadhills in Lanarkshire, Allan Ramsay began his career as a wig maker. But he also collected and rewrote a large collection of old Scottish songs and ballads which were published in 1724. The following year he published "The Gentle Shepherd" a pastoral collection which gave a vivid description of rural scenery. This would later form the basis of John Gay's "The Beggar's Opera." His success in this field encouraged him to open a number of bookseller's shops and a library at the Luckenbooth in Edinburgh's High Street, one of the first in Britain. Many of the literary figures of the day would congregate there. He also set up a theatre (which was suppressed by the Edinburgh magistrates) and an auction house. He built a house on Castle Hill, beside Edinburgh Castle - at the current location of Ramsay Gardens , named after him. He died on January 7, 1758. While he is not regarded as a great poet, his vein of "return to nature" had an influence on both Robert Burns and Sir Walter Scott

SCOTLAND ' S PEOPLE Sign our Visitor's Book. Allan Ramsay ARTIST He was the son of Allan Ramsay, poet, who encouraged his artistic leanings from the age of twelve, until he went to London at twenty to study under William Hogarth. The English genius took a liking to Allan and thought so much of him that he dedicated his twelve engravings, illustrative of Butler's Hudibras , to the young Scot. In 1736 Ramsay travelled through Europe to Rome, being shipwrecked on the way, near Pisa. At Rome he studied at the French Academy under two celebrated painters, Solimena and Imperiale. He enjoyed Roman society and entertained them by writing verse, sonnets, odes, epigrams in various languages. In 1738 he returned to Edinburgh for two years and began a series of very fine portraits, especially of the 2nd Duke of Argyll. He found Edinburgh society fully as famous as London's and made friends with David Hume, Adam Smith, William Robertson and others of that brilliant coterie. In 1756 he returned to London and was on terms of intimacy with top society, painting portraits of many of them. He painted several portraits of the young King George III and Queen Charlotte for presentation to foreign monarchs and statesmen. So much was demanded of him that he employed the young Scots painters, David Martin and A]exander Nasmyth, to assist him. In 1775 he had an accident in Italywhich prevented him from painting and affected his health, so he retired to Rome, leaving an assistant to finish off the portraits of no less than fifty pairs of assorted kings and queens, with which Europe at that age was surfeited.
