Allan Ramsay primus. David Hume. Archibald, duke of Argyle. President Forbes. Provost Coutts. Lady George Lennox. Lady Erskine. Allan Ramsay, the poet.] In consequence of an accident which injured his arm, Ramsay retired from business about the year 1775. He then lived several years in Italy, amusing himself chiefly with literary pursuits. His health gradually sinking, he formed the wish to return to his native land; but the motion of the carriage brought on a slow fever by the way, and he died at Dover, August 10, 1784, in the seventy-first year of his age. John Ramsay, the son of the painter, entered the army, and rose to the rank of major-general. His two daughters, Amelia and Charlotte, were respectively married to Sir Archibald Campbell of Inverness, and colonel Malcolm of Ford farm, Surrey. Significant Scots
Allan Ramsay he indulged and improved his social qualities, he, by taking to wife an excellent woman, Christian Ross, the daughter of a writer in Edinburgh, laid the foundation of a lifetime of domestic felicity. It was in the year 1712, and in the twenty-sixth year of his age, that he entered into the state of matrimony; and the earliest of his productions that can now be traced, is an epistle to the most happy members of the Easy Club, dated the same year. This club originated, as he himself, who was one of its members, informs us, "in the antipathy we all seemed to have at the ill humour and contradiction which arise from trifles, especially those that constitute Whig and Tory, without having the grand reason for it." This club was in fact formed of Jacobites, and the restoration of the Pretender was the "grand reason" here alluded to. In the club every member assumed a fictitious name, generally that of some celebrated writer. Ramsay, probably from the Tatler, which must have been a book much to his taste, pitched upon that of Isaac Bickerstaff, but afterwards exchanged it for that of Gawin Douglas. In the presence of this club, Ramsay was in the habit of reading his first productions, which, it would appear, were published by or under the patronage of the fraternity, probably in notices of its sittings, which would tend to give it celebrity and add to its influence. The elegy on Maggy Johnston seems to have been one of the earliest of his productions, and is highly characteristic of his genius. An Elegy on

Ramsay, Allan
(b. 1713, Edinburgh, d. 1784, Dover) Scottish portrait painter, active mainly in London. He was the outstanding portraitist there from about 1740 to the rise of Reynolds in the mid 1750s. Ramsay studied in London, in Rome, and in Naples (under Solimena), and when in 1739 he settled in London he brought a cosmopolitan air to British portrait painting. His portraits of women have a decidedly French grace (The Artist's Wife, National Gallery, Edinburgh, c. 1755) and in this field he continued to be a serious rival to Reynolds , who was upset when Ramsay was appointed Painter-in-Ordinary to George III in 1760.
Ramsay, however, gradually gave up painting during the 1760s to devote himself to his other interests. He was the son of Allan Ramsay, the poet, and inherited his father's literary bent. Political pamphleteering, classical archeology (he revisited Rome in 1754-57), and conversation took up much of his later years. He was successful in literary circles and Dr Samuel Johnson said of him: 'You will not find a man in whose conversation there is more instruction, more information, and more elegance.' Works

I have been at UMIST as Professor of Formal Linguistics since 1995. My first degree, from the University of Sussex, was in Logic and I have an MSc in Logic from London University and a PhD in Artificial Intelligence from Sussex. I came to UMIST from University College Dublin, where I was Professor of Artificial Intelligence.
What is Formal Linguistics?
I hold the post of Professor of Formal Linguistics. What this means is that my research is directed at obtaining precise formal descriptions of the way that natural language works. People have studied language for thousands of years. The ability to use language is one of the major distinctions between humans and other intelligent animals, and it is hardly surprising that people have long wanted to know how we do it. Until quite recently, however, most work in this area was rather imprecise. There simply was no way of making theories of language precise, and there was no way of subjecting linguistic theories to detailed extensive tests. It is clear that language can be described at a variety of levels. Languages have

Allan Ramsay
Allan Ramsay was born in LeadhilIs (Lanarkahire) on 15 October 1684. His father, who was factor (estate manager) to the Earl of Hopeton, died soon after the birth, and Ramsay's mother subsequently married a farmer. In the early 1700's Ramsay was apprenticed to an Edinburgh wig maker, and in 1710 he opened his own shop in the Grassmarket. In 1712 he co-founded the Easy Club, a literary society with Jacobite leanings, for which he adopted the pseudonyms "Isaac Bickerstaff" (taken from Swift) and "Gawin Douglas". Despite his Jacobite sympathies and strong nationalist views, however, Ramsay took no part in the 1715 uprising. In 1720 he became a bookseller, first at a shop (now gone) in Niddry's Wynd (Niddry St) and then from 1726 at another shop in the Luckenbooths (also gone) on the High Street near St Giles, where he created (in 1728) what is generally considered to have been Britain's first circulating library. By then he had already established himself as a poet (his first collection was published in 1721). In those days publishers and booksellers were effectively equivalent, and Ramsay was in a good position to promote his own work. He also edited and anthologised the writing of others, most notably in "The Tea Table Miscellany" (1724-37), an important collection of ballads and songs (often heavily altered) which helped stimulate a revival of interest in traditional folk-song. Ramsay had an interest in early Scots poetry, and wrote additional verses to the anonymous burlesque poem "Christis Kirk on the Green" which is usually attributed to
