Allan Ramsay, the son of the poet Allan Ramsay, was born in Edinburgh on 2nd October, 1713. At thirteen he entered Edinburgh High School where he excelled at languages.
In 1729 Ramsay entered the recently established Academy of St Luke in Edinburgh. This was followed by a period as pupil in London to the Swedish portrait painter, Hans Hysing. In 1732 he returned to Edinburgh where he set up as a portrait painter in Castlehill.
Ramsay made his first visit to Italy in 1736. He lived Rome where he studied under the artist, Francesco Imperiali. This was followed by working with Francesco Solimena in Naples.
In 1738 Ramsay left Italy and established a studio in London . He was soon recognised as the best portrait painter in Britain. Over the next few years he is commissioned to paint the portraits of many important people, including his main patron, Archibald Campbell, 3rd Duke of Argyll. Now financially secure, Ramsay purchased the Kinkell Estate in Fife.

Allan Ramsay b.Lanarkshire 1686, d.Edinburgh 1758
Wig-maker in Edinburgh who rapidly prospered. Joined the Jacobite "Easy Club" and there entertained his fellow members with his early poetry. By 1718 he had given up wig-making and became a bookseller. In 1719 he published a volume of "Scots Songs" which soon ran to a second edition. Between 1724 and 1727, Ramsay published three volumes of collected English and Scottish traditional ballads, together with songs he and his friends wrote, under the title of "The Tea-Table Miscellany" . One of Ramsay's own compositions was "The Lass o' Patie's Mill", which can be found in William Thomson's "Orpheus Caledonius" In 1725 he published "The Gentle Shepherd" , which brought Ramsay instant success. By 1750 "The Gentle Shepherd" had reached a tenth edition. This pastoral drama, at first without songs, caused Leigh Hunt to write "Ramsay is in some respects the best pastoral writer in the world" and Pope is known to have admired the work. Ramsay started a circulating library, the first of its kind in Scotland and his shop was a favoured meeting place for literati. He corresponded with Gay and Pope and was much in demand in the drawing-rooms of Edinburgh.

RAMSAY, Allan
(b. 1713, Edinburgh, d. 1784, Dover)
Biography
Scottish portrait painter, active mainly in London. He was the outstanding portraitist there from about 1740 to the rise of Reynolds in the mid 1750s. Ramsay studied in London, in Rome, and in Naples (under Solimena), and when in 1739 he settled in London he brought a cosmopolitan air to British portrait painting. His portraits of women have a decidedly French grace (The Artist's Wife, National Gallery, Edinburgh, c. 1755) and in this field he continued to be a serious rival to Reynolds, who was upset when Ramsay was appointed Painter-in-Ordinary to George III in 1760. Ramsay, however, gradually gave up painting during the 1760s to devote himself to his other interests. He was the son of Allan Ramsay, the poet, and inherited his father's literary bent. Political pamphleteering, classical archeology (he revisited Rome in 1754-57), and conversation took up much of his later years. He was successful in literary circles and Dr Samuel Johnson said of him: 'You will not find a man in whose conversation there is more instruction, more information, and more elegance.'
